Boxing may have turned out to be a little too much for Shakur Stevenson! On January 29, the undefeated lightweight boxer announced his retirement from the sport just at the age of 26. However, BoMac, Terence Crawford’s trainer, thinks Stevenson will come back eventually! But the question is, why does he think that?
Back in November last year, ‘Sugar’ took on Edwin De Los Santos in a fight that would make critiques out of fans who previously praised Shakur. With one of the worst, and as people are calling it, boring fights, Stevenson fell out of favor. It eventually led him to decide to hang up the gloves. But BoMac thinks it won’t last long, as he revealed in an interview with Fight Hype today!
BoMac claims Stevenson is taking a little time off
BoMac has previously touted Shakur’s superiority in the lightweight division, even claiming he is one fighter who can defeat the greats in the division. So, when asked about Stevenson’s retirement, BoMack seemed hopeful about Stevenson’s return. “[Maybe] he is a little bit frustrated right now,” said Crawford’s trainer.
Shakur Stevenson calls out British boxer
Despite claiming to be in retirement, the Newark native doesn’t fail to drop hints of return in his tweets on X. Not long ago, Stevenson penned some choice words for fellow British pugilist Campbell Hatton. Originally, an X user shared a picture of Hatton and Stevenson’s record side-by-side, questioning whether he would come back for a massive payday!
So, the American fighter responded to the tweet by stating, “I would punch him so many times Ricky [Hatton] would grab the towel [himself] and toss it in the ring.” In a later tweet, he even added, “Man, I prob[ably] wouldn’t even step back lol. I’ll give every fan their money back one by one if I don’t stand right in front of that dude all night.”
While BoMac is optimistic about Shakur Stevenson, the same can not be said about others in the community. After his retirement announcement, the Newark native received even more backlash from the public, who claimed it was nothing more than a publicity stunt. Do you think Shakurt Stevenson is coming back to the sport? Do you even want him to come back?
