Phil Mickelson admits LIV Golf might change tournaments to 72 holes instead of 54. This change could mean the Saudi-funded series finally gets Official Golf World Ranking points. Mickelson says after his last round at the Masters that he wouldn’t be surprised if this happened this season.
Mickelson says: “Every competitive round is an opportunity to play well and compete. I don’t think it makes a difference either way. We’ve got mini-tours playing 54, Champions Tour playing 54. I wouldn’t be surprised if some or all of LIV events went to 72. I don’t know, but it doesn’t matter. I enjoy the competition.”
Going into the tournament, people wondered if defending champion Rahm would be ready, but he felt good. He barely made the cut and thought the windy conditions during the third round were tough enough for play to stop. He feels bad not being in contention to keep his title and admits his game is off.
Changing to 72 holes could greatly affect LIV Golf’s chances of getting OWGR points, as one criticism has been the short tournaments.
