Tiger Woods’ son Charlie Woods is not on site at this week’s 152nd Open Championship at Royal Troon because he is getting prepared to compete in next week’s US Junior Amateur at Oakland Hills.
Charlie, 15, qualified for his first-ever USGA tournament last month after leading his qualifying event with a score of 1-under par.
The winner of the US Junior Amateur will get to secure a spot at the 2025 US Open, set to take place at Oakmont Country Club.
Charlie’s father Tiger Woods won the US Junior Amateur three straight years from 1991 to 1993.
Woods then went on to win the US Amateur another three straight years from 1994 to 1996.
As a result of Charlie’s latest performance, he surged to a career-high of 38th in the ‘Class of 2027’ per The Universal Golf Rankings (TUGR).
Charlie has been on site with his dad at several tournaments this season, the last of which came at the US Open.
Woods, 48, does not have a full-time golf coach as such and he has relied on his son Charlie to take a closer look at his swing in the lead up to the majors.
The 15-time major champion has only played in a handful of tournaments this year as he continues his recovery from ankle surgery last year.
Woods will be making just his fifth start in 2024 at this week’s 152nd Open Championship at Royal Troon.
He withdrew during the second round of the Genesis Invitational, before finishing dead last of those that made the halfway cut at The Masters.
Woods then missed both cuts at the US PGA and US Open.
