Promoter Eddie Hearn says there’s a new opponent in the running to face Anthony Joshua following lengthy talks for a Deontay Wilder fight.

After an offer to stage the fight in Saudi Arabia was taken off the table, Hearn has remained adamant that the team behind Joshua are still doing all they can to make the match-up against the hard-hitting American heavyweight.

Having said that, another fight signed for Saudi may have changed things.

Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk recently announced that they will be putting their belts on the line in an undisputed event that could take place as early as December 23.

With that news, the IBF has ruled that the winner must immediately face its mandatory challenger, Filip Hrgovic. Because of the reports of a rematch clause for the loser in the Fury-Usyk bout, a fight against the Croatian is unlikely to take place.

In that case, the belt will become vacant and Hrgovic will fight the next top contender for it – currently Joshua at number three. Hearn told Boxing Social that it ‘changes things’ for his charge.

Asked to weigh up the benefits of each potential match-up, the promoter seemed to lean towards Hrgovic despite it being a lesser spectacle.

Otto Wallin recently beat Murat Gassiev in an eliminator for the IBF’s top spot behind Hrgovic, and the Swedish southpaw will go ahead of Joshua in the next rankings update.

Whether or not Hearn can organise a fight with Hrgovic – who he co-promotes alongside Wasserman Boxing – in the meantime remains to be seen.

Many in the sport believe that Anthony Joshua’s days of fire-fights and quick knockouts are over.

Pundits point to the Olympic Gold Medalist’s stoppage loss to Andy Ruiz Jr in New York back in 2019 as the moment ‘AJ’ switched his style up and began to box tentatively.

Following two losses to Oleksandr Usyk and a second switch of trainer, Joshua has again been labelled a tentative fighter after his performances this year against Jermaine Franklin and Robert Helenius.

Whilst the man himself says he’s just becoming a smarter operator, others believe he’s gun-shy because of a fear of what’s coming back at him.

Billy Joe Saunders is in that camp. Speaking on Up Front with Simon Jordan, the two-weight world champion said Joshua ‘lets himself down.’

Asked if he thinks Joshua is ‘done’ and if he isn’t willing to put himself in jeopardy inside the ropes any longer, Saunders agreed.

The true test of Joshua’s mentality could come against Deontay Wilder – the American heavyweight with 42 knockouts from 43 wins.

Whilst the fight is struggling to get over the line, the Brit’s team is clear in that it’s still the opponent he wants next. If that’s not the case, there’s a chance he is back out in December.

Ricky Hatton believes Anthony Joshua’s next opponent should be Deontay Wilder.

Joshua was last in action in August when he he knocked out Robert Helenius, and now Hatton says “AJ” should be working with the “Bronze Bomber” to put together a bout.

“He’s had a couple of warm up fights since [losing back-to-back title fights to Oleksandr] Usyk, now is the time for him to get in [against Wilder],” Hatton told Mighty Tips.

Wilder last fought in Oct. 2022, when he defeated Helenius in the first round. Since then, there has been speciulation that Wilder and Joshua would square off, but the potential fight has never progressed past the theoretical stage, which Hatton said left him a “little bit devastated” as a boxing fan.

However, should the fight happen, Hatton feels he has a good idea what will happen.

When asked who he thinks would win between Joshua and Wilder, Hatton said, “It’s the heavyweight division, so whoever lands. You’d have to turn around and say who lands first.”

He added: “Technically Wilder is hopeless — you wouldn’t teach a novice kid to throw a right hand like he throws it, it’s all over the show.

“But when it goes straight down the pipe, it’s murderous, horrendous, he’s one of the biggest punchers in heavyweight history.

“The only reason he couldn’t keep Tyson [Fury] down was because Tyson could see his backhand coming and technically he’s all over the shop and with Tyson’s upper body movement, his ability to switch and pull, that’s why when he did get in he wasn’t able to get the next one in.

“But with AJ, he’s more in front of you and maybe you’d have to say Wilder has a better chance of getting it in against AJ than Fury. But when you see how bad technically Wilder is and how good technically AJ is, there’s every chance AJ can get it in first.”

Eddie Hearn has weighed in on Anthony Joshua’s surprising recent link up with Tyson Fury’s former trainer Ben Davison.

Reports emerged over the past few days that Joshua had spent time working with Davison at his gym, leading fans to speculate over the relationship between Joshua and his trainer Derrick James.

Speaking to Boxing Social, Hearn explained that Joshua is “100%” still with James, however added that Davison is a “fantastic coach” who is helping ‘AJ’ sharpen his tools ahead of a potential end of year fight.

Joshua’s next fight is up in the air the moment, after the disappointing news that a cross Atlantic blockbuster with Deontay Wilder, which had been tipped to land in Saudi Arabia, will unlikely be next.

Joshua has made it clear he wishes to stay active and wants to stick to his plan of fighting three times this calendar year, with hopes he could be back out this December.

The Matchroom Boss has expressed a willingness to look to revisit the Wilder fight at another international location, though it is unclear how much progress has been made on this front.

Carlos Takam believes Francis Ngannou’s power stacks up to Anthony Joshua.

‘The Predator’ is set to make his boxing debut later this month in Saudi Arabia. There, he will face Tyson Fury in a pay-per-view non-title affair. Ahead of the bout, Ngannou is expected to be a massive underdog.

Furthermore, ‘The Gypsy King’ is so sure of his impending victory, that he’s booked a December bout with Oleksandr Usyk. To help spring the massive upset, Ngannou famously brought in Mike Tyson to coach him.

Furthermore, he’s working and sparring with names such as Carlos Takam regularly. The 42-year-old was even seen at Ngannou’s open workout earlier this month. There, the two did some very light sparring, showing the PFL fighter’s technical ability.

During a recent interview with The Mayweather Channel, Takam was asked to compare Ngannou’s power to Anthony Joshua. ‘AJ’ famously defeated the heavyweight contender in 2017, by a highly controversial tenth-round stoppage.

In the interview, Takam indicated that the two were comparable punchers, stating:

Francis Ngannou is fully prepared to throw a wrench into Tyson Fury’s plans.

‘The Gypsy King’ recently booked a late December bout with Oleksandr Usyk. The fight with ‘The Cat’ will determine the first undisputed heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis did so over two decades ago.

However, that’s only if Fury will be able to get through the fight unscathed. As of now, the WBC heavyweight champion is expected to do exactly that. Furthermore, Fury’s father has predicted that the bout will be the easiest of his entire boxing career.

Nonetheless, Francis Ngannou is ready to cause some havoc. Backed by Mike Tyson, one can’t blame the former UFC heavyweight champion for feeling confident. On X, ‘The Predator’ reacted to Tyson Fury’s recent fight announcement.

In a post, Ngannou questioned how Fury would be able to fight Usyk, considering his impending medical suspension. While he’s a big underdog as of now, the former UFC champion isn’t lying down heading into his boxing debut later this month.

Simon Jordan believes Anthony Joshua needs to score a devastating early KO of Deontay Wilder in order to earn a fight with Tyson Fury.

The talkSPORT host has insisted AJ’s been ‘left in a vacuum’ by last week’s news that Fury and Oleksandr Usyk have now signed contracts for an undisputed heavyweight world title fight in the coming months.

Earlier on the same day, Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn had confirmed that a proposed Saudi Arabia site deal to stage their planned showdown with Deontay Wilder, which he’d previously claimed was ‘locked in for December’, is now dead.

Representatives for AJ and Wilder remain in talks trying to salvage that fight in a different location in February or March.

However it’s irrefutable that Fury and Usyk have surpassed the pair by finalising their own Saudi site deal and signing it off months in advance.

Jordan said on talkSPORT’s talkBOXING Podcast: “It feels to me that this is a good day for boxing in terms of the unification fight that everyone says they want.

The two best fighters in the world right now, we’re getting what we wanted.

“But Anthony Joshua gets left in a vacuum because I’m pretty sure there is this ambition from Joshua to fight Fury.

“And if Fury were to win this fight, which I think he will, I think there’s a distinct possibility that Fury will go, ‘That’s it, I’m done.’

“He [could go], ‘I’ve beaten Wilder, I’ve beaten Usyk who beat Joshua, I’ve beaten the man who beat the man, so what have I got to do besides throw you a bone?’

“And that puts a challenge on Anthony Joshua and the only way I think Anthony Joshua corrects that is if he fights Deontay Wilder and knocks him out very convincingly, very early in the fight.

“If he does something Fury couldn’t do, then it becomes a legacy discussion.”

Jordan continued: “I don’t think Fury is gonna give Joshua any leg-up, any opportunity, unless there’s a really, really good reason.

“Right now, beating Jermaine Franklin and Robert Helenius, and just being on the periphery of it all now, is not a reason for Fury to go, ‘I’ll tell you what – I’ll bring you into the light again.'”

Regarding how AJ’s team will have reacted to the news of Fury vs Usyk being signed, Jordan added: “I think there would have probably been a collective sign in the Joshua camp.

“It would be about, ‘This could be the end of our opportunity in heavyweight boxing. If this fella goes and beats Usyk, then there’s a distinct possibility, unless we do something to counteract that, that we’re not gonna get this fight. And we want this fight.'”

Time will tell if Joshua vs Wilder, and subsequently Joshua vs Fury, do indeed come to fruition.

Following Zhilei Zhang’s incredible stoppage of Joe Joyce in London, many fans have called for him to step in against Anthony Joshua.

The two heavyweights fought on the amateur scene at the London 2012 Olympics quarter-finals, with Joshua dropping Zhang in the second round to go on and win a 15-11 points decision. He won Gold and turned professional one year later.

As things stand, Carl Froch thinks the result would be flipped in the pros. He told Best Gambling Sites that the Brit’s current form wasn’t inspiring.

Gervonta Davis

Having said that, Froch says that potential lies in the bout for Joshua, believing ‘Big Bang’s style to be the acid test as to whether or not he can return to his previous style of searching for a stoppage through accurate and punishing combinations.

Joshua has been criticised of late for fighting tentatively, something pundits believe he can’t do should he land the bout he’s chasing against Deontay Wilder. The same likely applies to Zhang, who was quick to get Joyce out of there with a thudding right hand.

News as to who and when the two-time world champion will fight next is expected soon.

Anthony Joshua versus Deontay Wilder may just be the most intriguing match-up in the sport that wouldn’t be for a world title.

The two heavyweights seem to have finally agreed that it’s the right time to face off after the years of a unification of the belts being possible.

Now, both with losses to the current champions, fans were promised it would happen this year. A shift in the boxing landscape in Saudi Arabia means that is now not the case.

Speaking to Boxing King Media, Hall of Fame fighter Barry McGuigan said that it was good – at least from Anthony Joshua’s career point of view – that the fight talks have taken a hit.

Anthony Joshua

Promoter Eddie Hearn tells Boxing Social that the hard-hitting American is still very much the target for his charge, even despite the task of now finding a new site. He is still open to ‘AJ’ fighting this December if the fight can’t be finalised soon.

As for Wilder, it looks like he’ll remain inactive until he gets his hands on Joshua. Talk of a fight in the meantime with Andy Ruiz Jr has fallen apart due to a dispute on the purse.
