Heavyweight contender Zhilei Zhang believes a showdown with Anthony Joshua is the perfect scenario – as both heavyweight champions are signed on to fight each other in the coming year.

Zhang is currently riding with a lot of steam after stopping Joe Joyce in back to back fights.

The Chinese giant would like to get a measure of revenge against Joshua, who holds an amateur victory over him in the 2012 Olympic games.

At one point they were stablemates under Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom banner, but the fight never happened.

Zhang is the WBO’s mandatory challenger to unified champion Oleksandr Usyk. The unbeaten Ukrainian is signed on to fight WBC champion Tyson Fury in an undisputed fight in 2024. There is a two-way rematch clause, which creates the likelihood of them fighting each other twice.

While the champions are busy fighting it out, Zhang would like to get his hands on Joshua. Hearn has recently expressed some interest in such a fight.

“I think Joshua is a big option for me considering Fury and Usyk have signed for a unification fight to happen next. I have history with Anthony Joshua, and I used to be with Matchroom Boxing, but they never wanted to make the fight with me,” Zhang said to Gambling.com.

“All of a sudden, there is now talk from Eddie Hearn about a fight between myself and Anthony Joshua, but I never saw anything materialize with the fight. If they are really interested, I am here 24/7 so send over the contract and we will get it on.

“When I was with Matchroom, my team spoke to Matchroom face to face, and they knew I wanted the fight, but they never decided to make it for whatever reason. I can go to London for the fight with Joshua, Saudi Arabia is an option or even China.

At one point in time, Deontay Wilder vs. Anthony Joshua was the marquee bout in heavyweight boxing.

Before ‘The Bronze Bomber’s’ rivalry with Tyson Fury, there was no matchup that drew more attention than a potential clash between Wilder and Joshua, and there was good reason behind the hype.

Both were undefeated knockout artists and world champions. Unfortunately, the bout never took place, and Wilder has repeatedly blamed Joshua for it.

He’s now at it again, claiming that Joshua fears him in a public callout he made on Blue Blood Sports TV , which has been shared on X by iFL TV:

Deontay Wilder’s frustration are easy to understand, as he’s been calling for a bout with Anthony Joshua for years now. Unfortunately, the fight, wanted by many, never came to fruition, and ‘The Bronze Bomber’ found another English rival in Tyson Fury, with whom he has fought three times now.

Two high-profile boxers not facing each other despite sharing a division has become a more common phenomenon in modern-day boxing. Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao is one of the more examples, with the bout only happening more than five years after the first wave of negotiations.

A top trainer has predicted that Tyson Fury won’t touch Oleksandr Usyk and will get ‘slapped around’ should the pair fight soon.

Fury’s stock has has fallen in the eyes of some fans after his less than spectacular showing against Francis Ngannou in October.

What was predated by many to be an easy night for the WBC and Lineal heavyweight world champion turned out to be a much more even back and forth. Fury was knocked down in the third round but still managed to take a close split decision points win and has since spoken about just how hard he reckons the Cameroonian-Frenchman punches.

Former MMA Champion Ngannou, who had been trained by Mike Tyson, came out as the moral victor and is now well-placed to cash in with any number of fights against big-name heavyweights who want their chance to show Fury how it should be done.

Next up for ‘The Gypsy King’ meanwhile is the contracted and historic undisputed four-belt showdown with Usyk.

Speaking to ES News, twice former trainer of the year, Robert Garcia, didn’t hold back with his views on where Fury sits now in the world rankings.

The former Anthony Joshua coach went on to deride his latest performance against Ngannou and predicted a tough night in the undisputed fight.

Right now, that undisputed fight looks set to take place in February out in Saudi Arabia, just before the end of Riyadh season.

Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford is no longer boxing’s undisputed welterweight champion.

BoxingScene.com has confirmed the IBF has ceased recognition of Crawford’s reign due to his inability to satisfy a mandatory title defense obligation. The unbeaten three-division champ inherited interim IBF titlist Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis as an overdue title defense, but cannot comply with the sanctioning body’s rules on negotiations due to his contractually bound rematch clause with Errol Spence Jr. whom he dethroned earlier this summer.

“On August 25,the IBF sent a letter to TBC Promotions directing Terence Crawford to begin negotiations with interim Champion Jaron Ennis,” an spokesperson informed BoxingScene.com. “Negotiations were to be concluded by September 24.

“On September 22, the IBF received an email from Harrison Whitman representing Crawford indicating that the agreement for the Spence v. Crawford bout contains an immediate rematch provision which Errol Spence has exercised. As such, Terrence Crawford is unable to engage in negotiations with Jaron Ennis.”

Crawford (40-0, 31KOs) fully unified the welterweight division when he stopped Spence in the ninth round to win the WBC, WBA and IBF titles atop their July 29 Showtime Pay-Per-View event from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The switch hitter from Omaha, Nebraska entered the fight as the reigning WBO titlist, which he won in June 2018 and successfully defended for the seventh time.

The bout came with a contractual clause which allowed for the losing fighter to enforce a rematch. Spence (28-1, 22KOs) exercised that right, shortly after the IBF ordered Crawford to next face Philadelphia’s Ennis (31-0, 28KOs).

Crawford’s team went nearly the full length of the 30-day negotiation period before informing the IBF of its commitment to a second fight with Spence.

Sanctioning bodies generally do not honor rematch clauses as a justifiable exception for mandatory title fights. IBF Rule 3.B., in fact, prohibits the practice.

“No contract for a Championship contest shall contain any clause or any provision, whatsoever, guaranteeing or in any way assuring or promising either contestant a return Championship contest where such clause or provision interferes with the mandatory defense of a title.”

Most big fights tend to violate that rule, Crawford-Spence falling right into that category. It was a risk that Crawford was willing to take to secure a career-defining victory and a life-changing, healthy eight figure payday to go along with it.

“Based on the forgoing, the IBF has withdrawn recognition of Terence Crawford as the IBF Welterweight world champion,” confirmed the IBF.

Ennis claimed the interim IBF title in a twelve-round, unanimous decision victory over Karen Chukhadzhian on January 7 in Washington D.C. The IBF agreed to sanction the fight under such terms given that Ennis—as the mandatory challenger at the time—did not have a path to immediately challenge for the title.

Spence was ordered at the time to next face WBC mandatory challenger Keith Thurman. The sanctioning bodies are bound to a rotational system for unified titlists, which left the WBA and IBF in waiting. The WBA already recognized Eimantas Stanionis as its secondary ‘Regular’ titleholder and ordered his own mandatory title defense.

Ennis was permitted to challenge for the interim IBF title, which he since defended in a ninth-round knockout of Roiman Villa atop a July 9 Showtime Championship Boxing telecast from Atlantic City. The fight came with the official ruling that he would next challenge the Crawford-Spence winner, at least from the IBF’s viewpoint.

An update has yet to come on a Crawford-Spence rematch.

There was prior bickering about the weight and terms for such a fight. Spence noted after his first career defeat that he planned to move up in weight, to which Crawford was initially amenable immediately after their fight. However, Crawford—who reserves the right to determine the weight, per their contractual agreement—has since stated a willingness to fight at welterweight.

Whatever the case, he is now on the hook to either proceed with that fight or resume his welterweight championship reign, which now comes with one less title in tow.

Ennis will have to make a mandatory at some point, whenever the IBF is able to determine such a challenger. The unbeaten, rising star will be permitted a voluntary defense in the meantime.

Terence Crawford has held the WBO Welterweight World Title since 2018, and this year added the WBA, WBC and IBF belts by beating Errol Spence Jr.

It was a fight for the ages, and one which Crawford won handily within nine rounds after many people had deemed it a 50/50 contest.

The contractual rematch clause was well-documented beforehand, and it wasn’t long until Spence activated it. Since then though, nothing much has been made public about when, where or indeed at what weight the fight will take place.

Should it be at 147lbs again, it was thought that Crawford would have a chance to defend his newfound undisputed status, but the IBF’s most recent rankings update doesn’t see him listed at all.

Instead, the champion is now Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis, previously the Interim belt-holder.

Ennis – 31-0 with 28 knockouts and widely regarded as the heir to the welterweight throne – has been angling for a shot against Crawford, but the three-division titlist from Nebraska has said he has bigger fish to fry.

It’s understood ‘Bud’ Crawford has been stripped of the title because he will be unable to face Ennis in a mandatory defence.

The update has fuelled speculation that his rematch with Spence may take place at the super-welterweight limit of 154. It’s something the challenger has been keen on after making 147 for his entire career and recently being tight on the scales.

Should this see some movement in Crawford’s campaign, fans will welcome it. He has big plans on what he wants to do before retirement, including an unprecedented three-weight jump to challenge for Saul ‘Canelo’ Álvarez’ undisputed super-middleweight crown.

For that, or any other big fights to happen, he will first need to see off Spence for a second time.

With a stunning victory against Errol Spence Jr. in July this year, Terence Crawford, who was the WBO title holder before the match, became the undisputed welterweight champion as he won the remaining three titles. Following this match, while fans praised Crawford’s skills, several people urged Spence Jr. to hang his gloves given the punishment he took. However, Spence Jr. exercised the rematch clause their contract contained.

At this, while Spence Jr. and Crawford prepared for a second battle, the former IBF interim welterweight title holder became the IBF welterweight champion without fighting ‘Bud.’ Undoubtedly, the news shocked boxing fans around the world. However, here is what actually happened.

Failing to negotiate with Jaron Ennis, Terence Crawford is stripped of IBF welterweight title

According to a spokesperson, “On August 25, the IBF sent a letter to TBC Promotions directing Terence Crawford to begin negotiations with interim Champion Jaron Ennis. Negotiations were to be concluded by September 24.

Gervonta Davis is seemingly in line for a major fight in the coming months, according to his trainer Calvin Ford.

The American lightweight star has already boxed twice in 2023 – stopping Hector Luis Garcia in January and Ryan Garcia in April.

In June though, Davis was sent to jail and spent a total of 44 days behind bars.

Tank had initially avoided jail time over his November 2020 hit-and-run car crash which injured four people because he accepted a plea deal and pled guilty to four traffic offences.

However, not even a month after his sentencing, Davis was jailed after all as he violated the terms of his home detention order and was ordered to be incarcerated for the rest of his sentence.

He was released in July and has since been eyeing a ring return for either late 2023 or early 2024.

There have been rumours linking Tank to a rematch with Isaac Cruz, and even social media trolling that has led fans to believe he’ll be facing Keith Thurman next.

In truth, the identity of Davis’ next opponent remains a mystery at this point.

“Right now, something big is coming,” his trainer Calvin Ford said on
The Rize Podcast, “I can tell you that.

“It’s quiet for a reason. They’re trying to seal the deal.

It’s gonna make the world turn.”

Fans have guessed a variety of names including Teofimo Lopez, Devin Haney, Shakur Stevenson and Vasyl Lomachenko.

Time will tell who Davis actually fights next.

In the wake of Teofimo Lopez resuming his boxing training, Lopez’s manager and Gervonta Davis‘ trainer entertained the idea of a potential Lopez vs. Davis. While Calvin Ford who trains ‘Tank’ Davis found the idea “wonderful,” David McWater who manages ‘The Takeover’ Lopez declared that his client would certainly be interested in such a big fight. Likewise, McWater publicly stated that Lopez would square off against Davis one day.

As per current circumstances, neither Davis nor Lopez has a scheduled opponent. At this, it is likely that the bout will take place in no time. In this context, as fans hope for a clash between Lopez and Davis, the former recently met the ‘Einstein of Wall Street.’

In his last fight, Lopez competed for the WBO super lightweight title against Josh Taylor. Following a UD victory against Taylor, in a shocking statement, the 26-year-old declared that he was retiring from the sport of boxing. Claiming he was “tired of bullying,” ‘The Takeover’ said he needed a break. As a result, stating he had “shined bright,” the 26-year-old hung his gloves. However, now that he is back, ahead of a comeback fight, Lopez found himself with the ‘Einstein of Wall Street.’

Taking to Instagram, in one of his stories, Lopez shared his brief interaction with Peter Tuchman aka the ‘Einstein of Wall Street.’ Having met the former unified lightweight champion, Tuchman was genuinely happy. And ahead of his rumored bout with Davis, Tuchman said, “The champ. Teofimo Lopez, let’s go. It’s ‘The Takeover’.

In this connection, following the statements by McWater and Ford, as fans hope for the fight with ‘Tank,’ it is worth mentioning that Lopez had earlier slammed Davis.

In the wake of his victory against Taylor, Lopez said he was fighting everyone from the boxers to the judges who scored his fight. In this context, on being asked about a fight with Davis at a catchweight, ‘The Takeover’ feared that the fight would never come to fruition. Hence, he slammed Gervonta publicly. Out loud, he said, “Gervonta, you are a p***y. You are a b***ch“.

With that said, do you think the bout will happen? If it does, who will you root for, Lopez or Davis? In addition, what is your reaction to ‘The Takeover’ with Tuchman

There’s a rampaging ‘Tank’ searching for a kill. And from what it appears, it has a target in the crosshairs. It didn’t take much to fire the first parting shot. Professionally, the year had been fantastic for Gervonta Davis. After a successful title defense in January, the Baltimorean boxer scored one of the most decisive victories of recent times against Ryan Garcia in April. However, it is on the personal front that he has had to suffer a few setbacks.

On July 14th, Davis came out of jail after serving 44 days of the 90-day house arrest sentence he received for the 2020 road accident case. Amidst streams of talks on match-ups, he has yet to make a return to the ring. However, that hasn’t prevented the southpaw from taking now-and-then digs. For instance, he went after renowned trainer Robert Garcia and his charge, Raymond Muratalla, who recently scored a knockout victory over Diego Torres Nunez. But for reasons still not clear, the latest developments came when the world champion shared his apprehensions over how a few legal restrictions could impact training.

An upcoming foe, the ‘Tank’?

Soon after Muratalla became the North American Boxing Federation Lightweight Champion as well as the WBO Global Lightweight Champion, Robert Garcia took to his X account and said how everyone has started not to sing what he and his team have been witnessing for some time in the gym. Raymond Muratalla is now ready for anyone in the Lightweight division. 16 of Muratalla’s 19 victories came through knockouts. No wonder ‘Danger’ has emerged as one of the foremost prospects in the Lightweight division to reckon with.

FightHype uploaded a short clip today. It showed screenshots of Robert Garcia’s tweets. But it was followed by a response from Gervonta Davis as well. The WBA Lightweight champion wrote, “On my momma, that n**a a** @GarciaBoxing.

Could the shade-throwing be inferred as an attempt to gradually make a move for the next match-up?

Gervonta Davis: between rumors and reality

It should be noted that since the Garcia fight followed by the jail term, ‘Tank’s name has come up against the likes of Terence Crawford, unified Lightweight champion Devin Haney, and Shakur Stevenson. However, barring the update on the Isaac Cruz rematch, most thus appear as passing talks only. Davis recently shared clips of him getting back in the gym and training with fans. But from what it seems and given the time left in the year, in all likelihood, a return from one of the faces of boxing could be expected by the early months of next year only. Fans will have to wait until such time to see their icon back in the ring.
