Canelo Alvarez’s

Browsing

The owner of Matchroom Boxing, Eddie Hearn, believes he has the definitive name of Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez‘s next opponent for September 14 and, according to his information, it would not be David Benavidez or Terence Crawford, but the Puerto Rican fighter, Edgar Berlanga, who is the mandatory challenger of the World Boxing Association (WBA).

In an interview with Boxing News, Hearn confirmed that, although there are no firm negotiations with the Canelo Team at the moment, he did point out that if the fight is finalised, it could take place in the Saudi Arabian market, at the Kingdoom Arena in Riyadh.

“In a million years I can’t believe they’re going to fight Scull,” (International Boxing Federation mandatory challenger).

He added: “I would think it’s a deal to step aside. I’m sure there’s a lot of talk with Canelo Alvarez around the world. I’m not really involved in that, apart from a possible fight with Edgar Berlanga, which there have been some whispers about. There are no negotiations about that fight. Obviously, he’s under contract with us. He’s a Matchroom fighter.”

What are the certainties for the possible fight between Canelo and Edgar Berlanga?

According to El Nuevo Herald, Canelo Alvarez has three finalists for his September fight: Edgar Berlanga, David Benavidez and William Scull, all mandatory opponents and the final decision will be known in the coming weeks.

In Scull’s case, which is the most delicate because if he does not reach an agreement it could cost him the IBF title, Canelo has already made him a financial offer to avoid the fight, but it is still unknown if he accepted the offer to step aside. Several reports confirm that Scull has too little card to challenge for an undisputed 168-pound title fight.

While in the case of Berlanga, he has enough name to challenge the Mexican and, in addition, by becoming WBA mandatory challenger, he has intensified his campaign in search of becoming Canelo’s challenger.

Also in the pipeline remains the possibility of David Benavidez, who looks like the most attractive opponent for Canelo and has been waiting for the opportunity for three years.

Canelo Alvarez, 33, has 61 wins (39 by knockout), two losses and two draws in his professional career and although he is in the beginning of the final stretch of his career, he still has some good fights ahead of him.

Legendary boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has said that Canelo Alvarez will duck Terence Crawford and the British businessman revealed why the Mexican doesn’t want the scrap with the 36-year-old American.

Alvarez is hunting for his next opponent after soundly battering Jaime Munguia at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, winning via unanimous decision after flooring the 27-year-old.

So obviously all attention turns to the highest-calibre opponents in boxing as Canelo is currently the biggest name and draw in the sport, meaning fans and sponsors are vying for some super-fights.

One such name is Crawford, who is 40-0-0 with 31 knockouts. Fighting out of Omaha, Nebraska, he is praised for his tactical knowhow and his ability to adapt to opponents including swapping between southpaw and orthodox.

He is also the WBO, WBA, WBC, IBF and The Ring welterweight champion after knocking out Errol Spence Jr. in July 2023, but Hearn believes he is no good for the Mexican’s legacy despite being an undisputed champ.

“Not speaking on Canelo’s behalf because I don’t represent him,” Hearn said, as per boxingnews24.com. “I don’t think he’s overly interested in the Terence Crawford fight, because I’m thinking he’ll be thinking, ‘I’m not going to get any credit for beating Terence Crawford.'”

“He’s a 147-pounder, who just moved to 154. You’re asking him to move to 168 and fight a guy [Canelo] that’s massively outsized him.

“Also, at this stage of Canelo Alvarez’s career, stylistically, I’m not sure he wants to fight a mover [Crawford] that he’s going to have to chase around the ring.”

Canelo concurs as legacy question frustrates him

Canelo’s CV is one of the finest of any living or deceased boxer. He has 65 fights to his name with 61 wins and 49 knockouts, with just two losses and two draws. He is also the undisputed super-middleweight champion and has previously been a champion in the light-heavyweight division, middleweight class and light-middleweight league.

But obviously each fighter has some haters and now Canelo appears to be tiring of them as he declares Crawford isn’t worth it because if he wins, he beat a small guy and if he loses, he was beaten by a small guy.

“No,” Canelo told Box Azteca back in February. “So now if you imagine Crawford as a welterweight. 168lbs.

“I have everything to lose and nothing to gain because if I win, they’ll say, ‘Oh, he was too small,’ and everything!”

Canelo Alvarez’s manager and trainer Eddy Reynoso has denied claims that they have been offered a guaranteed purse of $55million to face David Benavidez next.

The undisputed super-middleweight world champion is set to return to the ring on May 4 in Las Vegas although his opponent is yet to be announced.

The fight boxing fans are crying out for is an all-action affair with Benavidez, who holds the WBC ‘interim’ belt and has called for his shot.

WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman recently confirmed that Benavidez will be made Canelo’s official mandatory in March.

However, a fight won’t be ordered until after the Mexican superstar’s next outing.

Benavidez’s team appear to be losing patience with the debacle and have since announced plans to move up to light-heavyweight to face Oleksandr Gvozdyk in June instead.

The 27-year-old’s promoter, Sampson Lewkowicz, insists they have tried hard to get the Canelo fight over the line to no avail.

In a now-deleted tweet, the Head of Sampson Boxing claimed a $55million (£43million) offer had been tabled by Al Haymon’s PBC for a fight between Canelo and Benavidez that included a healthy chunk of the pay-per-view percentage on top.

“Boxing is unpredictable and can change multiple times in a day ‘yes’,” wrote Lewkowicz.

“PBC in coordination with the Team @Benavidez300 offered Team @Canelo a guarantee of $55million that would exceed $60million by adding @AztecaDeportes PPV and more. We are going to 175lbs.”

But, Reynoso insists such claims are categorically untrue and also said there has been no official proposal for a bout with Terence Crawford either.

“The reality is that none of the big promoters, not Al Haymon from Premier Boxing Champions, not Eddie Hearn from Matchroom, not Bob Arum from Top Rank and not even Oscar De La Hoya from Golden Boy have given me an offer to fight Benavidez… and certainly not Terence Crawford,” Reynoso told ESPN Mexico.

“The fight with Benavidez may take time or may never happen, but it depends on many things.

“There were fights that never happened, that of Lennox Lewis with Riddick Bowe, that of Julio César Chávez with Terry Norris, that of Érik Morales with Juan Manuel Márquez, and none of them stopped going to the Hall of Fame because of that.

“There were others that, although it took a while, ended up being done like that of Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, among the fighters there is no fear, we just wait for the conditions to be met.”

Reynoso went on to add that an announcement on Canelo’s next opponent will be made next week.

Jermall Charlo has been reported to be the Mexican’s first choice, though PBC are said to prefer a more lucrative bout against Munguia.

Time well tell how the situation is resolved.

Canelo Alvarez will announce a disappointing effort for his usual blockbuster date on Cinco de Mayo in Las Vegas.

The Mexican superstar confirmed an announcement regarding his career for this Tuesday. Despite retirement assumptions by many, the four-weight world champion is lining up his next fight.

However, Terence Crawford has seemingly fallen out of favor. According to Ring Magazine, Canelo is reverting to type and the original plan to face both Charlo brothers.

Canelo defeated Jermell Charlo at a canter last September after Jermall dropped out, citing personal issues. Jermall wanted the first option to face Canelo next on the premise that he gets back in the ring before the New Year.

He did that when scoring a decisive victory over Jose Benavidez Jr. on the undercard of David Benavidez vs. Demetrius Andrade in November. That triumph put Charlo in pole position due to Canelo’s ongoing deal with Premier Boxing Champions.

But it’s still unlikely Charlo will have any better of a chance than his twin brother.

Canelo vs Charlo

The blueprint for Canelo looks to be seeing out his Charlo fixation before David Benavidez in September. Crawford, hungry for more undisputed accomplishments, must hope super middleweight king Canelo gives him a chance in May 2025 once the dust settles on his renewed time with Al Haymon.

Crawford was recently the subject of discussions by Floyd Mayweather CEO Leonard Ellerbe about his value to Canelo. Ellerbe says Benavidez makes the most sense in finishing the trio of bouts with PBC.

“No. I know the numbers. I know the business. No, it’s [Canelo vs Crawford] not [bigger than Canelo vs Benavidez]. It has nothing to do with whether or not somebody deserves the fight or whether they should fight. We’re just talking about the business. The Benavidez vs. Canelo fight and Crawford vs. Canelo is no comparison,” Ellerbe told Fighthype.com.

“Terence Crawford is the best fighter in the sport. I mean, he’s proven that. But it has nothing to do with the business; you must know what that means. For example, Errol Spence and Terence Crawford are two tremendous fighters. Everybody knows Errol’s my guy, but the biggest fight in boxing all along was Tank and Ryan. Their fight [Spence vs Crawford] was the most talked about fight in the last six or seven years. They were two young [both well over 30], undefeated guys in their prime.

PPV business

“But the business is the business, [and it] said something else. That fight did half of what Tank’s fight did, and their fight did very well. But, again, you just got to understand how this works.

“When you have the kind of experience we’ve had, understanding what these marketplaces look like, and piracy, and all the factors involved with the success of a PPV event.

“It just comes down to knowing what you’re doing and what you’re not doing.”

Fans can expect Canelo to reveal the Charlo decision on Tuesday – if what The Ring is stating comes to fruition.

Undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez already has potential fights lined up for 2024. Terence Crawford and David Benavidez are among Canelo Alvarez’s possible opponents next year, per Talk Sport’s Michael Benson.

“Jaime Mungula, Jermall Charlo and Terence Crawford are reportedly potential opponents for Canelo Alvarez in May, with David Benavidez a potential opponent in September [according to @ESPNKnockout,” Benson tweeted on Tuesday.

If Canelo Alvarez secures a bout against Jermell Charlo in May, it will serve as a rematch. Alvarez prevailed via a lopsided 12-round unanimous decision over Charlo on September 30.

Terence Crawford, David Benavidez are Alvarez’s most intriguing opponents

Terence Crawford

Alvarez criticized Terence Crawford’s record during the lead-up of the former’s bout against Charlo.

Although Crawford has an immaculate 40-0 record with 31 knockouts, the Mexican boxing legend noted the American’s sub-par opposition. Alvarez claimed Crawford’s only quality opponent was Errol Spence, Jr.. Crawford disposed of Spence via a ninth-round TKO on July 29.

“No, look, like I always said, I respect Terence Crawford. He’s a very talented fighter but he won just one big fight. If you see his record, he just beat one good fighter in Errol Spence. Other than that, I don’t think he’s beaten other great fighters like Spence,” Canelo Alvarez said.

David Benavidez said he proved his naysayers wrong after the emphatic win over Demetrius Andrade. Critics thought Benavidez’s sub-par defense will eventually become his downfall. However, Benavidez made Andrade miss time and again. The former improved his unbeaten record to 28-0 with 24 knockouts.

Canelo Alvarez seeks to improve his 60-2-2 record with 39 KOs next year. With the way things are going, potential fights against Terence Crawford and David Benavidez will provide the most drama.

The boxing world can’t stop talking about the victory of Canelo Alvarez over Jermell Charlo. As famous, ‘Cinnamon’ beat Jermell Charlo and kept his super middleweight title. Charlo had moved up two weight classes, confident in giving Canelo a tough fight, but struggled during the bout. We don’t know if it was the weight change, lack of recent fights, or just facing a formidable opponent that caused Charlo’s loss.

Alvarez took control from the start. He knocked Charlo down in round seven, showing he’s still at his best and shunning the critics for his past performances. As a reason, many think this victory makes him the face of boxing. However, Gervonta Davis, another top champion, disagrees. In a recent interview with Fight Hype, ‘Tank’ unraveled why he’s still the face of boxing despite Canelo’s lopsided win against ‘Iron Man.’

Why does Gervonta Davis think he’s “the face of boxing”?

According to Davis, Alvarez’s win was great but not spotlight-stealing. Davis believes the sport’s face must show dominance and showmanship. He thinks these qualities are part of his own style. As ‘Tank’ said, “for sure, I think I’m the face of boxing already if we being real. I think I’m the face of boxing right now. I think with Canelo going out the door, all the top guys, I mean. Canelo’s probably the only one, but he’s going out the door.”

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA – APRIL 23: CAPTION at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

When the interviewer asked what he thinks it takes to be the ‘face’ of boxing, he gave a detailed answer. He said, “Just every time I’m in there, just put on a great performance, you know. Just go out there and put on a great performance. That’s, I think that’s what make me, what make me that star over everybody. ‘Cause people be winning, but they, you watching them and they be like, first of all, they go 12 rounds. Not saying 12 rounds is bad, but it just like how they do it. Like they run and they think it’s still amateur boxing and things like that. Like, come on.”

Who’s Tank aiming next to make his legacy irrefutable?

According to Boxing Social, Calvin Ford, Davis’s trainer, recently revealed the mega fight Davis is aiming for next. The focus is on a potential bout between Davis and Teofimo Lopez, a two-weight world champion. Both fighters have a long history, tracing back to their days in the American amateur ranks. He said it’s not a question of “if,” but “when.” Both fighters have sparred before, adding intrigue to a future pro bout. Ford believes the fight will happen after they clear other challenges.

He wants Lopez to keep his 140-pound class spot, while Davis holds his. Both fighters are at career highs after recent wins. Davis beat Ryan Garcia, and Lopez defeated Josh Taylor. However, there are still logistical hurdles in the fight’s manifestation. These include promoter and broadcasting issues that need resolution before scheduling the fight.

The boxing ring is as much a stage for personalities as it is for athletes. While Canelo Alvarez’s recent win over Jermell Charlo was a significant milestone, Gervonta Davis remains steadfast in his belief that he is the true “Face of Boxing.” With upcoming fights and plans to diversify his boxing portfolio, Davis is not just talking the talk; he’s walking the walk.

So, who do you think is the real face of boxing—Canelo Alvarez or Gervonta Davis? Or is there room for more than one star in this arena?
