A huge fight goes down this weekend.

Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia clash this weekend in one of the biggest fights of the year so far.

The WBC super-lightweight title, held by Haney, will be up for grabs as Garcia looks to become world champion for the first time.

Here, DAZN looks at the two fighters and what they must do if they’re to claim victory.

Devin Haney

Make a fast start

Once Ryan Garcia felt the power of Gervonta Davis in round two, the fight changed dramatically in the favour of the Baltimore man.

If Haney can hurt Garcia in the fight’s early stages, then it may make Garcia recall his meeting with ‘Tank’ and make the job harder than it needs to be.

Avoid the antics of Garcia

It’s been an unpredictable few months for Garcia with his conduct on social media leading some in the boxing industry to question whether he should fight.

Could Garcia be doing this to get into Haney’s head? It appears to be a strange approach and Haney must not let it impact his performance.

Focus on this task

Haney is one of boxing’s biggest names and he’s constantly linked to some of the grandest fights in boxing.

If he’s not fully fixed on Garcia this weekend, it’s highly unlikely that he’ll land bouts against the likes of Gervonta Davis, Shakur Stevenson, and Teofimo Lopez.

Ryan Garcia

Be patient

Garcia made a rapid start in the opening couple of sessions against Gervonta Davis, but his recklessness left him open in round two and the fight changed.

Don’t jump on Haney from the start as he’s a fighter who is hard to catch clean. Feel your way into the fight and wait for opportunities.

Punch with Haney

There’s a fair chance that Garcia is the puncher in this fight, especially with his left hook, and with Haney set to be busy, Garcia could meet him head on.

Haney has been hurt in the past and he struggled with Lomachenko’s pressure at times, Garcia can get close, he might make an impact.

Concentrate on the fight

Garcia is a huge social media figure as well as a world class fighter and there’ll be many people watching him this weekend.

It’s set to be a frantic week in New York with plenty of events to hype the show and Gracia can’t afford to get distracted.

Isaac Cruz made Rolando Romero eat his words Saturday night.

Cruz (26-2-1, 18 KOs) started off fast and beat Romero (15-2, 13 KOs) from pillar to post, from the opening bell until the fight was stopped in the eighth round. Romero simply had no answer for the pressure that Cruz applied and only had small moments of success.

With the victory, Cruz captured a junior welterweight title.

Romero trash-talked Cruz throughout the leadup to the fight, referring to him as a chihuahua instead of his nickname of “Pitbull.” The hype culminated with Romero sporting a gold chain with a chihuahua amulet featuring Cruz’s face during fight week.

When asked about the chain at the post-fight press conference, Cruz’s father and trainer, Isaac Cruz Sr., didn’t hold back.

“We made him eat his words,” the elder Cruz said. “We trained hard and did what we planned. As far as the chain goes, he can keep it because that is a lifelong reminder of the beating my son gave to him.”

As for his future plans, Cruz didn’t rule out any opponent. He said that he is open to fighting anyone.

The media mentioned unification bouts against Subriel MatiasDevin Haney and Gervonta “Tank” Davis (in a rematch) as possible future opponents. Cruz said he was open to facing all of them.

“I have always said that I have no problem fighting anyone,” Cruz said. “It is very simple: Both sides just need to come to an agreement, and we can make any fight happen. It is just a matter of negotiating a fight and coming to terms.”

On April 20th, Devin Haney will defend his Super-Lightweight title against Ryan Garcia in Brooklyn. On the other hand, after the victory against Edwin De Los Santos in Las Vegas last year, Shakur Stevenson is expected to return against Artem Harutyunyan on July 6 in Newark. Meanwhile, Gervonta Davis is expected to make his comeback since the Ryan Garcia fight in April 2023 against former sparring partner Frank Martin. But, what if Davis, Shakur, and Haney fought one another?

Floyd Mayweather’s protege Curmel Moton, who just won his third professional fight against Anthony Cuba last night on the undercard of Tim Tszyu vs. Sebastian Fundora, has answered the above question! Having trained with Davis and Shakur, Moton believes Haney will exceed the two at Terence Crawford’s weight.

Curmel Moton thinks Devin Haney exceeds Shakur Stevenson and Gervonta Davis at Welterweight

Curmel Moton has always considered Gervonta Davis one of his role models in the sport. On the other hand, the 17-year-old has always spoken about Shakur Stevenson and Devin Haney respectfully. On the other hand, Shakur Stevenson praised Moton’s skills after sparring with the latter ahead of his fight against Shuichiro Yoshinho. According to Shakur, Moton had speed and skills. Meanwhile, Moton has predicted Devin Haney will beat Ryan Garcia via UD.  On that note, since Curmel Moton “rides with” Haney, Shakur, and Davis, he was asked who would win if the trio fought one another at 147 lbs.

While Gervonta Davis is 5′ 5½″, Devin Haney and Shakur Stevenson are 5′ 8″. However, last year, Devin Haney moved up to Super-Lightweight to challenge Regis Prograis for the WBC Super-Lightweight title. After 12 rounds, Haney won the contest via UD. At this, provided Haney’s size and resume, Curmel Moton feels Haney will beat both Shakur Stevenson and Gervonta Davis should they fight at 147 lbs where Terence Crawford was the undisputed champion.

At 147, Devin. I feel like Devin’s the only one big enough to go up that high. They are all great. I don’t even think they’ll fight as of right now. So, we’ll see in the future,” Curmel Moton told Champside.

Well, with that said, as boxing fans, we have to wait to see whether or not Davis, Haney, and Shakur consider moving up to the Welterweight division. But, as of now, do you agree with Curmel Moton’s argument? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below. For more boxing updates, follow EssentiallySports!

Devin Haney is weeks away from his fight against Ryan Garcia in Brooklyn, New York! Even though the back and forth between both corners have died down following Garcia’s bizarre social media activity in the past month, one aspect still remains the talk of the town. That’s the entire drama surrounding the leaked sparring footage of ‘The Dream’ Haney and Gervonta Davis.

Before the first press conference for Haney vs. Garcia, the latter got close to Floyd Mayweather. During this period, ‘King Ry’ claimed Floyd shared Davin and Davis’ sparring clip with him, where Haney allegedly got beaten up. Garcia even mentioned the clip during the kick-off press conference and leaked it on social media soon afterward. Fast forward to today, during an interview, Bill Haney accused Mayweather of altering the said clip to make it look as if his son lost the fight.

Bill Haney claims his son made Mayweather retire

Speaking to Haney, a bunch of reporters probed him about the sparring clip, enquiring whether Floyd was the one who leaked it. In response, Devin’s father claimed, “You know goddamn well Floyd leaked the video with Tank… He didn’t leak the video he made the highlight film and then gave it to Ryan Garcia to leak it.”

When another reporter brought up the end of the clip, which wasn’t shown, Bill Haney claimed they removed the end because of the same reason why Floyd had to end his boxing career. “Same reason why Floyd didn’t show the video of Devin when he got in his… Devin is the last man… Listen, [I will] tell you this, I guarantee you after Floyd got in there with Devin, he rethought boxing from a professional standpoint and not an exhibition standpoint,” Bill told the reporters.

Moreover, even Devin Haney believes Floyd Mayweather was the one who leaked the sparring clip through Ryan Garcia.

Devin Haney slams Floyd Mayweather, calls him a hater

After Garcia leaked the footage, the former lightweight undisputed champion turned to X (formerly Twitter), expressing his disdain for Mayweather, who he calls a ‘miserable old man’“Floyd [has] been hating a long time.. this ain’t just start. I held my tongue for years because I respect the greats of the sport,” wrote Haney.

Despite holding back from speaking ill of the boxing great, Haney could not stop any more from showing the world how bitter Mayweather really is. “[The] dude is a bonafide hater [and] don’t wanna see nobody win if he not a part of it! I know he sent Ryan the sparring… I know he gave Ryan those p*mp comments to say. [The] miserable old man tried to stop the fight,” wrote Haney.

With mere weeks left in the much talked about fight between Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney, Bill Haney has accused Floyd Mayweather of doctoring the Gervonta Davis sparring clip to make his son seem like the loser. Meanwhile, there haven’t been any statements from Mayweather’s side about the same. Do you think Mayweather modified the clip? Or is Bill Haney trying to turn it around on Mayweather? Let us know in the comments section below.

The lead-up to the fight between Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney is filled with name-calling. The latter’s father-cum-trainer, Bill Haney, has now roped in Floyd Mayweather and his business aide, Leonard Ellerbe, accusing the duo of recording a controversial sparring video of his son, that went viral earlier this month.

Hostilities percolate deep within for the 20th April matchup. ‘Ry’ in his means of pulling down his opponent, leaked a video of Gervonta Davis causing serious damage to ‘The Dream’ in an old sparring session at the Mayweather Gym. While it looked like the controversy had died down in light of Ry’s other internet antics, it seems like senior Haney is still sore about it.

Bill Haney speaks up for his son!

When asked about the video that showed his son taking some major beating, a riled-up Bill Haney blamed Mayweather and his promotion company’s CEO Leonard Ellerbe for recording the video. He remarked to Fight Hub TV“He didn’t leak the video, he made the highlight film and then gave it to Ryan Garcia to leak it.”

As per reports, the video dates back to when Devin, now 25, was almost 17 and ‘Tank’, now 29 was 21. In the video, Tank can be seen going hard at Haney, leaving him hardly any moment to recuperate. While it showed the 2-division champion under heavy pressure, he claimed that the fight was edited to omit the last few moments of it.

Why did they not release the entire video, though? Senior noted, “Same reason why Floyd didn’t show the video of Devin when he got in his a**. Imma tell you this one time, I guarantee you, after Floyd got in there with Devin, he rethought boxing from a professional standpoint and not an exhibition standpoint.”

In an earlier interview, Senior Haney claimed that when ‘Money’ and his son sparred, the former welterweight champion was not even close to making it equal to Devin Haney. He noted, “He should’ve showed the sparring video of him and Devin while he’s showing all those sparring videos. And it was 6-0, it wasn’t close.”

The Haneys and Mayweather are not on good terms. Post the ‘KingRy’ fight, if he successfully dominates it, Haney will strongly push for a fight against the WBA light titlist, Tank. While he is no longer associated with ‘Pretty Boy’, there are worries if his cordial relationship with the latter implicates the fight against Haney. To these concerns, Bill Haney has an answer.

‘Money’ cannot harm Devin Haney vs. Gervonta Davis

In the conversation, Bill Haney observed that his beef with Mayweather and Ellerbe would not jeopardise a fight between his son and Davis. After all, it is the audience that seeks this fight, and their wish is his command.

He explained, “No, the people pay the bills. Leonard don’t pay the bills. Floyd don’t pay the bills. The people, all you guys, pay for the fight. They can’t, we don’t dictate that. You guys put the bullseye on a fighter’s back. Leonard don’t dictate nothing.”

Following a big victory, boxing fans generally have to wait a while in order to find out who their favorite fighter’s next opponent will be. Devin Haney is only nine days removed from stripping Regis Prograis of the WBC super lightweight title, yet a superstar can start being circled as his next possible opponent.

It’s not by Haney’s own doing, though. Bill Haney, the vocal and outspoken father of Devin, has recently called out Gervonta “Tank” Davis for “hiding” from Devin by lowballing him with offers and a rehydration clause.

Tank Davis responds to Bill and Devin Haney

Davis has not taken kindly to Bill’s words, and Tank has now responded in a short yet brutal manner.

“I promise you. Your father gonna cry for what I’m a do to you.”

Davis ended up deleting the tweet, but Devin responded by saying “let’s make it happen” and Davis followed up with “say nothin..“.

It’s tough to get a gauge on if Davis is truly serious about the fight, but it would be a risky proposition. Davis doesn’t really have anything to fear given how his career has played out, but Haney is 31-0 and at the top of his game. Davis hasn’t faced a boxer as technically sound, especially defensively, as Haney yet.

Haney recently moved up a weight class. Davis hasn’t fought at super lightweight since 2021, when he won the WBA title but then vacated to go back to lightweight. It will be interesting to see what weight the two would agree on if the fight ever materializes.

Devin Haney is living a sweet moment after his win over Regis Prograis and now there are several possibilities for “The Dream.” The first is to defend the super lightweight title against the number one WBC challenger Sandor Martin, as long as he wins his fight this Saturday; the second is to unify with Rolly RomeroTeofimo Lopez or Subriel Matias; the third is to move up a category, an option that he has already hinted at.

The truth is that because of his status, he is in a privileged position to choose. But the reality is that Haney must remain in the 140-pound category (63.5 kg) despite the sacrifice that may entail. He was able to gain 25 pounds (11.33 kg) in the rehydration period against Prograis.

One thing that Haney is particularly proud of is his meticulous approach to nutrition with the SNAC (Scientific Nutrition for Advanced Conditioning) system, whose founder and CEO Victor Conte was in the shadows for a few months due to the BALCO scandal, a laboratory similar to SNAC. Because of his weight-gaining abilities and work with SNAC, “The Dream” wanted to respond to critics who say he has an advantage.

“I’ve been doing the same thing for years, just killing myself to make weight after the weigh-in….. The world said I had pads on my fists and I was this and that! Now, once I go up, they pull out every excuse in the book,” said Haney. “I didn’t beat Regis by bullying him with my weight, I beat him because of my skills.”

Devin Haney challenges Tank Davis

Haney also called out Gervonta “Tank” Davis, who would have to move up to super lightweight to make a fight between them happen.

“Tank is a p—y…. He always says I want to fight when I already have a fight scheduled. Well now I’m free! Let’s make it happen,” Haney said.

Would Davis want to enter this fight knowing that such a dangerous opponent is capable of moving up 25 pounds before the fight? The answer is no.

From the peaks of standing as the Boxing Writers Assn. of America trainer of the year in 2022, Derrick James has traveled a turbulent path since.

Following the losses of his top fighters, Errol Spence Jr., and Jermell Charlo, within a three-month period last year, James is poised to return to elite events with his fighters Ryan Garcia and unbeaten lightweight Frank Martin.

James told BoxingScene Thursday at Garcia’s news conference with April 20 foe Devin Haney that he also has Martin (18-0, 12 KOs) in his Dallas area gym beginning preparations for his showdown against unbeaten WBA lightweight champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis (29-0, 27 KOs).

While Davis-Martin has not been formally announced by Premier Boxing Champions, the target date for the bout is June 15, BoxingScene has learned.

“We have Frank Martin working out,” James told Boxing Scene. “Things have been said about that. It’s a big deal, yeah.”

Martin caused an uproar by withdrawing from negotiations to fight unbeaten Shakur Stevenson of rival promoter Top Rank in November. He’s now landed a more high-profile date against the Baltimore slugger who last year generated 1.2 million pay-per-view buys in his stoppage victory over Garcia.

James has also worked with former three-belt heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua, who next weekend in Saudi Arabia will fight former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou after a camp spent in England under Tyson Fury’s former trainer, Ben Davison.

“It’s easiest for (Joshua) to train over there,” James said.

Following Joshua’s dominant showing in his Dec. 23 fifth-round stoppage of Otto Wallin, James was asked if he expects a convincing triumph over the ex-UFC champion.

“There’s no such thing as easy money,” James said. “The only walk in the park in boxing is when you’re actually going for a walk in the park.”

As for the career-boosting possibilities of leading Garcia and Martin into these underdog-role bouts, James said he is eager to restore the way many in the sport viewed him after the years it took to direct former three-belt welterweight champion Spence and formerly undisputed 154-champion Charlo to their heights.

“I like me in this fight,” James told Boxing Scene. “I believe in Ryan. I believe in myself. And I believe in his abilities. That’s what it’s all about.

“It’s about being diligent about who you are and focusing on what your abilities are, and that’s what gets you what you want.”

The old Devin HaneyGervonta Davis (now Abdul Wahid) sparring footage is back in the news. Reportedly disclosed, it might have finally put to rest the varied claims made over the years. However, no doubt, it has stirred the hornet’s nest. A string of controversies, assertions, and rebuttals seems to have marred the upcoming Ryan Garcia-Devin Haney fight. But rising featherweight star Bruce Carrington believes one has to be a bit circumspect while leaping to conclusions based on a clip.

Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney are going to meet in a month’s time at New York’s Barclays Center. The duo will fight for the latter’s WBC light welterweight belt. FightHype caught up with Bruce Carrington at New York’s Turning Stone Resort Casino. The venue hosted the Raymond FordOtabek Kholmatov title clash.

Bruce Carrington: ‘The Dream’ vs. ‘Tank’ sparring

Three weeks ago, the 26-year-old Brooklyn-born featherweight achieved a new milestone in his over-two-year-old career. He became the new occupant of the vacant IBF Inter-Continental, NABF, and WBO Inter-Continental featherweight championships. He knocked out Philippines-born, Norway-based boxer Bernard Torres in the fourth round, delivering a statement victory. FightHype’s Javon Hill asked, “I want to get your opinion on the sparring the leaked sparring Ryan leak of a Tank and Devin. What do you think about that?

Bruce Carrington replied, “Oh yeah, no, that made that was crazy you already know that’s gonna cause a lot of controversy.” However, he seemingly cautioned. He perhaps wanted everyone to understand that, after all, Devin Haney was just sixteen when the sparring happened. Gervonta Davis (now Abdul Wahid) had yet to commence his world championship-winning spree. However, he was already twenty-one and a veteran of nearly a dozen fights. So definitely, that gave him an advantage over young Haney

But you guys got to put a lot of things into play. Devin was 16; you know what I mean, and that would give you definitely you know, Tank more of a edge on that,” Carrington said. But from ‘Shu Shu’s perspective, the footage might give some hints.

Not just what it appears

Certain aspects of the boxers that they might have seemingly carried back from those days. Hence, when studied in relation to the upcoming battle, it makes for an intriguing insight.

Bruce Carrington said, “But I still see the little things that both fighters still do from back in that back in the day when they did spar, so very interesting perspective that is putting into the potential fight to come up, man. It definitely got a lot of people, like, you know, a ringing, and got a lot of people like watching out for this fight.

Many followers would be keenly watching out for how the leaked footage plays out the thoughts and emotions of both boxers in the run-up to the big fight. But for sure, with over four weeks still separating the two from slugging it out, they can look forward to some more fireworks played out in one form or another.

The mind games between Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia have taken a strange turn stemming from Garcia leaking an old sparring video featuring Haney.

Garcia apparently thought a sparring session from nine years ago showing Haney getting hit hard by Gervonta Davis was a clever way to get under his opponent’s skin.

Haney responded by not seeming to be fazed at all, writing on X he made a bet to get in the ring with Davis and it paid off for him.

Haney and Garcia are doing a good job of selling this fight, even if some of the verbal sparring is going way over the top.

During a press conference on Tuesday, Garcia vowed to retire if he gets knocked out in the first round when pressed by Devin’s father, Bill Haney.

“If you get knocked out in the first round, are you going to retire?,” Bill Haney asked.

“I’ll give you my word,” Garcia replied.

Haney threatened to boycott that press conference, because he felt Garcia was wasting everyone’s time with all of the outside noise.

Gervonta Davis

Garcia’s decision to show a video of Haney getting hit hard by Davis was interesting because Tank handed Garcia his first—and to date, only—career loss with a seventh-round TKO in April 2023.

Even though the outcome of that bout was pretty lopsided, with Garcia getting knocked down twice before the TKO, it was a massive financial success with an estimated 1.2 million pay-per-view buys in the United States.

Haney is an ascending superstar in the sport with a 31-0 record. A fight with Garcia that could do tremendous business will only help raise his profile, especially if he comes out of the bout with a victory.

The Haney-Garcia showdown for the WBC super lightweight championship will take place on April 20 in Las Vegas.
