Ryan Garcia has laid out his long-term plans – and he only wants big fights from here on.

First, he meets former amateur rival Devin Haney on April 20 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, then the 24-1 (20 KOs) 25 year old said he hopes to go on a run that will culminate in him being able to avenge the only loss of his career, which came against Gervonta “Tank” Davis last April in one of the biggest fights of 2023.

“I want to end my career fighting Tank Davis for the second time at 140lbs, after I defeat Devin, Teofimo [Lopez], Shakur [Stevenson], and then Tank,” said Garcia. “And then I’m done.

Haney, also 25, had used the Davis defeat to mock Garcia, saying he “quit” from a body shot when stopped in the seventh-round last year.

Garcia said getting down to the catchweight of 136lbs had left him depleted, and Davis beat what was left.

“It’s just stupid,” Garcia said of the quit jibes. “Okay, I want to see somebody cut all that weight, kill themselves, have blisters in your mouth because you’re so dehydrated, get in the ring, fight in front of everybody in the biggest fight of your life and get hit to the liver and you see what you’ll do. Don’t talk like that.”

But in defeat, Garcia said his eyes were opened and he started to feel differently. Earlier in his career, Garcia had taken time out to focus on his mental health, but after losing to Tank, he says a switch flicked within him and his mindset changed.

He will head to Dallas, Texas, to train with Derrick James for Haney, and spoke of how his hunger for the sport has changed.

“After that Tank fight, it really changed me – it awoke my competitive spirit,” Garcia said.

“When you’re going through a mental-health crisis, you don’t care about life, so me trying to get back into the sport and trying to be myself, it was a hard process. And then after the Tank fight, I woke up. I was like, ‘No I’m different. I’m about to go and destroy everybody now’.”

Gervonta Davis has boasted many times about his past sparring session against Devin Haney. He did this to paint a picture of his own dominance. Meanwhile, Haney, the former undisputed lightweight champion with a fresh belt under his name, remains composed. Both fighters bring contrasting narratives to the table. But whose is the truth?

Both of them claim to have dominated the other during this oft-mentioned sparring session. Their past sparring sessions might offer whispers of what’s to come, but the true story will unfold in the ring. The clip became an issue when Ryan Garcia, during a recent altercation, said to Devin Haney how Floyd Mayweather had shown him the video of Tank knocking Devin down. However, many stories are still lingering about this mysterious sparring video, and even Adrien Broner some time ago pitched in regarding this. But his opinions weren’t much appreciated by Devin’s father, Bill Haney.

Bill Haney takes shots on Adrien Broner

In the past, Adrien Br0ner had called out Devin Haney. Because of his closeness to Tank, relations are not very amicable between Broner and Haney. In the clip, Broner talked about his supposed involvement in the sparring session between ‘Tank’ Davis and Devin Haney. Broner stated, “I jumped in the ring because, at the time, Devin was 17.” Well, the reply for this was given by Haney’s father.

Bill Haney said, “With more tension brewing between the ‘Tank’ Davis team and the Devin Haney team, all centering around some footage that ‘Dollar Bill’ hasn’t released yet. Bill Haney took a subtle shot at Floyd Mayweather, calling him ‘Dollar Bill’, since he’s rumored to be the one holding the footage.

Gervonta Davis

Furthermore, Haney said, “But here I have an example of what Adrien ‘The Problem’ ‘Bonehead’ Broner did on the night in question.” A clip then came in, showing a woman interrupting a sparring session. He then ended the clip on an ambiguous note, saying, “Now if that ain’t the most crackish pre-workout s**t I done seen. If you don’t knock it off…

This sparring session has been in the talks among boxing fans for a long time now. A year ago or so, ‘Tank’ reiterated the sparring against Devin Haney on a podcast too.

Gervonta Davis recalls squaring up against Devin Haney

The highly anticipated lightweight showdown between Gervonta Davis and Devin Haney just got even spicier. Haney has ignited the flames by claiming he dominated Davis in their past sparring sessions, which were fought under “dog house rules” (no headgear, harder punches allowed).

Davis, never one to back down, took shots in the same podcast, promising to reveal his side of the story. He said, “But it was like, it was more so of, back and forth, and then once I got tired, it was like a little, he picked up like a little bit. But it was nothing like crazy, like boom, boom, boom. I don’t even talk about like, I caught him in the sparring match and almost knocked him out.”

He also confirmed Broner’s involvement, as he said, “Like Adrien jumped in the ring and like nah it’s over and everybody was just about to fight. Because I caught him and almost knocked him out.” Now, the facts would only be revealed if the sparring footage gets out sometime soon.

Devin Haney cruises through against Ryan Garcia, winning on point. That’s how the majority of fans visualize the showdown between the childhood foes going down this April 20 on DAZN. But you should hold on to that thought and reimagine the complete scenario. Is it this simple for ‘The Dream’ to go up against a man who is equal in scores with him? Is the champion’s boxing prowess enough to put out the burning fire of the challenger?

The odds and pundits have it in favor of the WBC super lightweight champion. A stacked resume, an unblemished record, and mastery over technical aspects all set Haney apart. Meanwhile, speed, power, and the will to impose himself on his rivals rage hot inside ‘KingRy’. But the pressing question remains. It’s not whether Garcia stands tall after he connects and puts Haney down for the ten count. It’s whether he connects at all.

Devin Haney vs. Ryan Garcia: method vs. madness

George Kambosos Jr.Vasily Lomachenko, and Regis Prograis were all left in the dust after Haney worked his charm as a highly skilled boxer. He is gradually peaking as he brings skills to the table when matched. Jabs and fighting on the backfoot come along with the package. However, Ryan’s speed and power pose a significant danger to the boxing standard Haney holds close to his heart.

Despite brushing aside the veterans and prominent names, Haney hasn’t fought anyone remotely as powerful as Ryan since turning pro. Moreover, the 31-0 record holder has been hurt by Lomachenko, Jorge Linares, and Joseph ‘JoJo’ Diaz. It’s a clear tussle between Haney’s weak chin and Garcia’s thunderous left hook.

While Haney can dance around using his back-step approach, he can’t keep it moving all day. With Garcia’s hand speed, he is sure to land at some point, and a shot at the chin is all it takes. But only power and hand speed are not enough. You need high-level footwork to keep everything in tandem. What else does the 24-1 record holder need, then?

Ryan Garcia’s supposed upturn after the Gervonta Davis fight

Combinations, sharpness, and skills. Garcia needs to employ all three. Otherwise, Haney’s staple jab will keep him at bay, and whenever Garcia tries to force his way in, the WBC champion will clutch and hold him. If Garcia of the Gervonta Davis fight had shown up, he would have failed. But we now have a new, keen-to-learn Garcia since that defeat.

Since dropping to the fight, Garcia has moved up to 140. With more bulk on his frame, he has more chances to build up his power and not sacrifice it while trying to make the weight. Fans witnessed the same when Garcia punched his way to victory against Oscar Duarte after his Floyd Mayweather-esque roll didn’t reap benefits.

In addition, the Victorville native’s eagerness to add more weapons to his arsenal is apparent. Despite his new skills being far from polished and adjustments still not sinking deep into his game yet, the fans can expect him to come into the squared ring with something similar. A loss has necessitated all these changes, and Garcia realizes his hand speed and his left hook have taken him only this far. He needs to mix it up to go further. While Garcia’s hitting remains stingy on the opponent’s flesh, he needs to match it up with elite footwork, and that’s where Derrick James comes in.

‘KingRy’: a finished product under Derrick James

Where does Haney separate himself from Garcia? Undoubtedly, it’s the tools that Haney has at his disposal. He has developed multifaceted skills, while Garcia got spoiled with power. But he has Derrick James in his corner and is rounding up his game and working on the fundamentals. Even if you spot the challenger unloading a shoulder roll, it will be much cleaner.

The hottest debate in boxing right now is – who would win when Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney get in the ring? And coming in hot is Abdullah Mason, who sparred with Haney in the past, with his predictions for the fight! The fight between ‘King Ry’ and the ‘The Dream’ was finally confirmed earlier this month! But it did not come easy!

While Haney has always been open to taking on the Victorville native, Garcia deviated from the point after getting influenced by Floyd Mayweather. However, things are on the right track now as the duo looks forward to battling it out on April 20 in Las Vegas! So, Fight Hype caught up with Mason yesterday to get his prediction!

Abdullah Mason claims, “Whoever [is] more focused” will win

While speaking to the reporter about the Garcia-Haney fight – Mason highlighted their amateur fight history! “It depends, you know, they both could fight, so you never know. They went three and three in the amateur, although the pros [are] different. So, you can get it at 50/50,” said Mason. Though Mason wasn’t sure who would get the upper hand during the fight, he revealed what he had observed.

“I could say right now, from what I’m seeing off of social media, you can never judge off that, but I’m seeing Devin looking a little more focused right now,” said Mason. Elaborating on his point further – Mason stated, “Whoever [is] more focused on outside of the ring, so I think Devin, he focused right now. So, that’s what I’m going lean towards!” Meanwhile, another rising star in the featherweight division has made his predictions for the Ryan Garcia vs. Devin Haney fight.

Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia

Ring Magazine Prospect Of The Year on Ryan Garcia vs. Devin Haney

Bruce Carrington is coming off a spectacular fourth-round knockout win over Bernard Angelo Torres. However, before that, he was named The Ring’s prospect of the year, so Fight Hype spoke to him and got his predictions for the Garcia-Haney fight. “[Ryan Garcia] He’s kind of like has to prove himself again and try to show fans if he’s going to give Devin Haney some work,” said Carrington.

Just like Mason, Carrington reflected on Ryan Garcia and Haney’s amateur fights and claimed, “I feel like Devin Haney edges, but..they fight in the amateurs. It was years ago, but they still have some of the similar style.” However, the 26-year-old added, “I honestly feel like the fight could go either way.”

With the Ryan Garcia vs. Devin Haney fight inching ever closer, the boxing world has started to take their picks between the two boxers. The upcoming fight will be Haney and Garcia’s boss battle as they settle the debate about who is better once and for all! Who do you think would win?

The date for the fight is set, and the predictions for the fight are out! Ryan Garcia will take on Devin Haney for Haney’s WBC super lightweight title on April 20 in Las Vegas. However, given the disparity in accomplishments between the fighters, many think Garcia doesn’t have a shot at winning! Despite that, Garcia had defeated Haney in the past!

The April 20 fight in Las Vegas won’t be the first time these two men enter the ring against each other. Having faced each other six times in amateur, both men have produced three wins each. So, the numbers hint at a 50/50 chance of both men winning. However, ‘The Goat’ Claressa Shields has other ideas. While speaking to Fight Hub TV today, she revealed whether the fight would be competitive!

Claressa Shields thinks Ryan Garcia won’t just lay there and get washed

Speaking to Marcos Villegas, Shields claimed the fight would be highly competitive, but just in the early rounds. “I see it as a very close competitive fight early. And I say that because of Ryan’s attributes, like he got heart, right? He’s fast, he’s flashy, he got some punching power, too. I just feel like [when] Devin figures him out, then the fight will become a little one-sided,” said Shields.

However, the undisputed queen doesn’t think Garcia would just give up and lose the fight. “But I’m not saying, ‘I think Ryan [will] just go out there and just lay down and get washed.’ I think that the beef is real between those guys, and Ryan really has a lot to prove,” said Shields. At the same time, Shields suggested that she hasn’t seen Garcia make any improvements in his style or add more ammunition to his arsenal. While Shields suggested the fight would be competitive, at least in the early rounds, Devin Haney thinks Garcia will quit on April 20!

Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia

Devin Haney wants to show the world who has gotten better since amateur days

While appearing in an interview with DZAN to discuss his upcoming fight against Ryan Garcia, Devin Haney reflected on the amateur fights, claiming it’s time to prove who the better fight is. “It’s been a long time coming. We’re 3-3 in the amateurs, and this is number 7. It’s time to seal the deal. To prove who’s the better man, who’s gotten better since the amateurs,” said Haney.

Eager for the fight, Haney even stated, “It’s time for me to show the world how great I really am.” Later in the interview, the Las Vegas resident highlighted Garcia’s loss to Gervonta Davis, suggesting, “We’ve seen Ryan quit before. And I don’t think this will be anything different…I think he’ll quit on April 20th.”

Even though the consensus in the boxing world doesn’t favor Ryan Garcia in the upcoming fight, Claressa Shields thinks the fight will be partly competitive. However, if the statement from Devin Haney is to be believed, he will make ‘King Ry’ quit! Nevertheless, only time will tell who’s prediction holds ground! Do you think Garcia has a shot against Haney? How do you think the fight will go?

On the 20th of April, Devin Haney will step inside the ring against Ryan Garcia with his WBC Super-Lightweight title on the line. While Haney is undefeated with 31 wins, Garcia is currently 24-1-0. Certainly, Garcia vs. Haney is one of the most exciting fights that Golden Boy Promotions will offer this year. But, who has a better chance of prevailing on April 20th.

On that note, Keyshawn Davis, who just defeated Jose Pedraza on February 8th, picked ‘The Dream’ over ‘KingRy’. Having been a contemporary of Garcia and Devin at the amateurs, Davis voted for Haney. But, why? Well, here is what the 24-year-old said.

Keyshawn Davis finds Devin Haney more skillful than Ryan Garcia

After Keyshawn Davis defeated Francesco Patera in July last year, ‘The Businessman’ called out Devin Haney, hoping to lay his hands on the Undisputed Lightweight title. In addition, Davis stated he would go for the stoppage if he and Haney were to fight. However, ahead of Devin Haney vs. Vasyl Lomachenko, Keyshawn Davis also showed his faith in Devin’s abilities. On being asked who would win, Davis had confidently said he “got Devin“. Similarly, ahead of Garcia vs. Haney, Keyshawn now continues to root for ‘The Dream’.

On being asked who would win between Ryan and Devin, Davis said, “Devin Haney’s got better skills, you know. I just think he’s the better all-around fighter.” “It’s going to be a hell of a fight though. I know it’s going to be a hell of a fight,” the 24-year-old emphasized.

I was with them at amateurs when they fought three times. So, it’s going to be a hell of a showdown,” Davis told Fight Hub TV. “But, I just feel Devin, he’s got more of the skills. He’s a more skilful fighter. I always go with the skill. So, Devin Haney,” Keyshawn concluded. Well, as Keyshawn said, Devin Haney has indeed displayed impressive qualities in his fights.

Haney is an intelligent fighter in the sense that he understands his reach. Although several people complained that he starts slow, Haney uses basic punches appropriately and avoids unnecessary risks. For example, when ‘The Dream’ fought George Kambosos Jr., he kept the latter at bay and made the most of his jabs and straight hands. Anyway, do you think Devin Haney will beat Ryan Garcia? In your opinion, who is more skilful – Garcia or Haney.

After sharing the spoils in six amateur bouts, Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia finally get to settle the argument in a professional ring.

Haney defends his WBC super lightweight title against Garcia in Las Vegas in April, a fight that will go some way to defining both careers. Though both are still young at 25, Haney has forged ahead as an unbeaten world champion. Garcia has yet to contest a world title fight and has one devastating loss to Gervonta Davis on his record.

You have to give the champion the edge but Garcia has guts, contrary to the claims of his detractors, including Haney. He also has a wicked left hook. Haney is bound to play on that defeat to Davis, and the body shot that did it for Garcia. Haney says he quit, and moreover, that the impulse to do so is now part of his fighting DNA.

I beg to differ. And I’m pretty sure Garcia will use all the barbs coming his way in the build-up as fuel in the fight. One thing is certain, the professional ring is a different space to the amateur version. Whatever Haney thinks he learned about Garcia will be of little use over 12 rounds.

As well as a fantastic left hook, Garcia can bang with the right hand too. We saw that up close against Luke Campbell at 135 pounds three years ago.

Devin Haney

He got off the deck in the second round to stop Campbell in the seventh. He did not look like a quitter that night.

Though Haney has had some high profile wins against George Kambosos, Vasyl Lomachenko and Regis Prograis. It was close against Loma. I thought Loma edged it, but Haney got the decision. Haney is a sharp hitter, but not heavy handed.

He is too conscious of being hit to sit down on his punches. Garcia hits harder. He’s a bit upright. I would like to see better upper body movement with him, but he has the tools to win if he can back up Haney and let his hands go. If he does that Haney will feel the heat.

We are looking at both these guys as potential opponents for our European super lightweight champion Adam Azim. I think he has a chance with any of these guys. Come October or November he will be ready to fight for a world title.

What a moment it would be were he to land in Las Vegas against a Haney or a Garcia. Nights like that are what we are all here for.

Very few fights exist which have enough historical significance for the world to remember them. The bout between Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia might just be one of them. On one corner we have Haney, who has been boxing since he was a child. He is technically sound and has perfect technique. On the other, we have Garcia, with his flashy knockout and body shots. Both carry a record of 3-3 against each other from their days in the amateurs. Thus, it will be interesting to see who comes out on top now.

While their fight has been confirmed as of now, it did not come without hardships. The decision came after multiple other fights failed to materialize for both fighters, eventually leaving them without opponents. Bill Haney, in an interview with Ariel Helwani on the MMA Hour, talked about how hard it was to secure the fight against ‘KingRy’ and the Golden Boy.

Bill Haney praises Oscar De La Hoya

Ariel Helwani asked Bill about how hard it was to make the fight happen, considering all the issues that happened between his team and the Golden Boy Promotions, including a very public altercation between him and Bernard Hopkins.

Haney replied, “Hey let’s push all the politics to the side and know that Golden Boy has been, Oscar De La Hoya has been a pillar in the community representing boxing, representing the big events,” giving much credit to Oscar De La Hoya and his involvement in making the major match up happen.

Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia

He proceeded to say, “So we had to push all egos, all pride to the side. Promoters now are working together. I think we’ve been working with everyone,” explaining how both sides saw common ground and came to an understanding to make the fight happen.

Bill Haney reflected on their impressive roster of collaborators, including Bob Arum and Eddie Hearn, among others. He emphasized, “So it was only right to come, to Oscar De La Hoya, the Golden Boy himself, and tell him, listen you got Bill, you got Devin, you have Ryan, you got Henry, let’s make this thing happen. We’d be fools not to right now.” After all the back-and-forth and hullabaloo, the two teams have now set the stage for one of the most exciting matchups of the year for boxing. Now it’s anyone’s game.

As soon as the fight date was set, the first one to come out guns blazing was Ryan Garcia. He warned what was to come his opponent’s way on April 20th.

Ryan Garcia fires the warning shot

While this marks their professional debut, the duo has crossed paths numerous times in the amateurs. Their previous encounters resulted in an even split of victories, heightening the stakes for this upcoming bout. On Instagram, Ryan Garcia succinctly captured the significance: “It counts now Devin. This fight for me means everything.”

He added, “Pray his dad stops this fight. He will be needed to be carried out if this fight doesn’t get stopped at the appropriate time.” His anticipation points toward a ferocious knockout. Ryan Garcia is going all in, fueled by the desire to demolish Devin Haney. But the lingering question remains: Can he truly deal Haney his first defeat?

Abraham Nova is a busy man. He’s doing his best to remain focused on several tasks, including beating O’Shaquie Foster and of course, becoming a world champion.

The 30-year-old loves scouting the 130-pound competition but he’s also a huge fan of the sport overall. The boxing world is full of talent and mouthwatering matchups. Probably at the top of the list of fights that have already been made is Devin Haney vs. Ryan Garcia.

Officially, the two will get it on in the main event slot on DAZN pay-per-view on April 20th. According to most who study and watch the sport, Haney has a clear edge. Maybe it’s his undefeated record, the WBC title wrapped around his waist, or the pound-for-pound worthy skills. Whatever the reasoning behind Haney’s supporters, Nova has a hard time understanding it. He’s spent most of his life around the sport, following the ins and outs. And, from his point of view, there’s no way Garcia doesn’t come out on top in that matchup.

“Ryan Garcia all day,” Nova told BoxingScene.com. “He’s gonna win.”

Blessed with fast hands and enormous talent, Garcia’s skills are seldomly denied. His heart, on the other hand, is ostensibly questionable.

After begging and pleading with Gervonta Davis to give him a chance, once they officially came to an agreement, Garcia promised to knock his man out quick, fast, and in a hurry. But, once Davis sent him to the canvas in the second round, it was an uphill climb.

In the seventh, it was curtains for Garcia. Initially, Davis’ body shot didn’t seem like some pernicious blow. However, Garcia instantly backed away before taking a knee. Many, including Haney, ripped Garcia in the immediate aftermath, going as far as to say that he quit.

Nova didn’t comment on whether or not Garcia waved the white flag intentionally. With that said, he has a feeling that Haney will be the one screaming no mas on April 20th.

“High possibility, yes.”
