Shakur Stevenson won a world title in a third division this month, but somewhat underwhelmed when doing so.

The Newark native beat Edwin De Los Santos over the distance to win the vacant WBC lightweight belt.

Stevenson – known for his slick skills and impressive defence – opted for movement over engagement, drawing boos from the Las Vegas crowd.

Post-fight, he admitted it was below-par.

Devin Haney – the man who held the title before the WBC made him Champion In Recess when he decided to move up and fight as a super-lightweight – was quick to offer his verdict.

Gervonta Davis and Shakur Steveson

In doing so, he cast up a debate about a 25% offer for Stevenson back when he was undisputed.

Another talented lightweight, Gervonta Davis, then entered the chat. Widely regarded as the money man of the division, he said that 10% was what he would give unified champion Haney.

The potential fights that can be staged between the trio are some of the best the sport has to offer. As things stand, Stevenson and Davis are closer to making that happen than either with Haney.

In 2022, the ladder that Edwin De Los Santos had to climb reached far into the Heavens. Against William Foster III, the Dominican suffered the first, and so far only, loss of his career. He might’ve been despondent but De Los Santos dusted himself off and got right back to work.

The extra time he put in has paid off. Luis Acosta, who at the time was an undefeated prospect, was clipped in the second round by De Los Santos. Back-to-back wins over Jose Valenzuela and Joseph Adorno made it three victories in a row.

With everything clicking, De Los Santos (16-1, 14 KOs) has officially earned his shot at a world title when he takes on Shakur Stevenson for the vacant WBC crown this coming Thursday.

Shakur Stevenson

The 26-year-old is good. But the best lightweight in the world? De Los Santos finds that laughable. In fact, outside of himself, he believes two other lightweights are clearly better than Stevenson.

“For me, I would say Gervonta Davis because the quality of boxing he has and his punching power,” De Los Santos told a group of reporters. “I would also say Devin Haney as well.”

De Los Santos has been a master trash talker during the lead-up to their showdown but he insists that he isn’t trying to get underneath the skin of Stevenson. From his point of view, Stevenson simply isn’t on the same level as the rest of his elite contemporaries, especially Davis.

“Haney has better boxing skills than Shakur and with Gervonta Davis, forget about it. He has power, he has everything. He’s complete.”

In a sport like boxing, where legendary matchups seem as elusive as a unicorn riding a rainbow, Shakur Stevenson has dropped a bombshell of optimism about a potential matchup. ‘Sugar’ Stevenson is all set to take on his upcoming opponent, Edwin De Los Santos, on 16 November in T-Mobile Arena, Sincity. However, that’s not the fight, fans and experts alike have been waiting for quite some time.

The boxing community has collectively shown extreme anticipation for a fight between the Newark native and Gervonta Davis or Devin Haney. While talks of ‘Sugar’ facing Haney came close previously, it fell apart quickly due to a dispute regarding purse split. In a recent turn of events, the Houston resident revealed his optimistic thoughts about a fight with ‘Tank’ happening before a fight with the ‘Dream.’ But the question remains – what is the reasoning behind his optimism?

Shakur Stevenson claims Gervonta Davis is a competitor

While appearing in an interview with Fight Hype, ‘Sugar’ Stevenson suggested that the Gervonta fight would happen before the Haney fight. “I got a lot more faith in the Tank fight happening before Devin fight,” said Shakur. He hinted at Davis’ competitive spirit, emphasizing ‘Tank,’ like himself, must be itching to prove his superiority.

“I think Tank is a competitor. I know deep down inside he want to prove to the world that he’ll beat me. As well as I want to prove to the world that I’ll beat him,” said Stevenson. Citing that as the reason, Stevenson asserted Davis would definitely fight him. Moreover, when it came to Haney, Shakur asserted that Haney would stay in the 140 division for a long time. “I think he’s going to be at 140 for a long time,” said Shakur.

Stevenson is aiming for three-division champion title

With the fight night approaching quickly, the boxing community is buzzing with utter anticipation to see Shakur in the ring again. However, the fight wasn’t easy to arrange for the Newark native. Several other boxers had previously declined to fight ‘Sugar’ for one reason or the other.

Nevertheless, Edwin stood up for the challenge. According to an article from Boxing FN, Shakur gave him all the credit for accepting the fight. Yet, as far as Shakur is concerned, he is aiming for the three-division champion title. “Watch me become a three-division world champion,” Stevenson said in media reports.

With the anticipation among fans to see Shakur face Davis or Haney in the future, ‘Sugar’ has revealed his optimistic prediction on the topic. Whether his prediction turns into reality is yet to be seen. What do you think about Shakur’s assertion? Do you think the ‘Tank’ fight would happen first?

In his next fight, Devin Haney is looking to become a two-division world champion at just 24-years-old.

The feat – especially after becoming undisputed at lightweight – would force fans and pundits to consider him amongst the very best in the sport, that is if they aren’t already.

But who does he consider to be top of the much-debated, often-dismissed pound-for-pound rankings?

Most have Terence Crawford at number one following his win over longtime rival, Errol Spence Jr, earlier this year. It made ‘Bud’ two-time undisputed and three-weight champion.

Haney has him up there, but he gives the top spot to Saul ‘Canelo’ Álvarez – a man who has been a steady presence on these lists but has perhaps taken a hit in recent years due to a loss to Dmitry Bivol and some underwhelming performances.

Speaking on the MMA Hour, ‘The Dream’ said Canelo’s search for greatness sets him apart.

Terence Crawford

Crawford is of course eyeing more gold in higher divisions before he retires, and has even called for a shot at Canelo’s four belts at super-middleweight – that would be one way to get above him on this particular list.

Whilst paying respect to Naoya Inoue – the man many people have up beside Crawford at the top – Haney said the Stephen Fulton and Nonito Donaire wins were the only standout names for the four-weight world champion from Japan.

Inoue has had ten world title wins, only one of which was for a vacant belt.

Haney also considers undefeated heavyweight champion, Tyson Fury, in his top three.

Should the 24-year-old keep winning, he’ll be adding to his own case to be at the top of the pound-for-pound conversation. The first step in doing so is beating WBC Champion Regis Prograis this December in his first fight at super-lightweight.

Following the official press conference announcing Devin Haney’s upcoming fight against Regis Prograis, Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn talks to reporters about his thoughts on Haney and how he would compare him to his contemporaries like Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis and Shakur Stevenson. Here’s some of what Hearn had to say below.

Hearn on who’s best between Tank, Haney, and Stevenson

“I’m a big fan of all of ‘em. I think Gervonta Davis is a beast, I think he’s very exciting. I think Shakur has tremendous fundamentals. I think if you’re looking at wins, then it’s definitely between Devin Haney and Tank. If you’re talking about ability, I mean they’re all unbelievably talented and you have to throw Shakur in that mix.

“But Shakur hasn’t beaten anyone yet of massive note. I know the win against Valdez was a big win at super feather. But at lightweight he hasn’t beaten anybody yet, and that’s not his fault. I do believe he’ll go on to be a great but right now if you look at the resumes…you have to say Devin but Tank has got a great resume as well.

“I don’t think it’s really a comparison. I think if Devin beats Prograis, I think then you’re talking about another level of moving up weight classes, beating the top at 140 or arguably the top guy at 140, and a guy that has power as well.

“I think if you look at Kambosos and you look at Lomachenko, neither guy has destructive power like Regis Prograis does. I think that’s what makes this fight really intriguing.”

Hearn on what he saw in Haney when he signed him to Matchroom

Devin Haney amd Gervonta Tank

“Just saw a bit of a superstar, really. I like the smile. He’s a very polite, respectful man. Bill’s raised him very well. I mean Bill has his ups and downs but you can’t question the job Bill’s done with Devin. I mean, it’s been unbelievable.

“And what I like about Bill as well, it’s not a total control thing. Like, he’s willing to bring people in, he’s willing to take advice. But what I saw in Devin in a guy who’s completely committed to his craft and as a promoter I like working with people like that because you know you’re going to get the most out of what you’ve got.

“So we’ll do the best we can do, you do the best you can do, and God will decide the rest. And with Devin it’s like once you’ve got a talent that you know is going to work hard, I just felt like at the time he was a big acquisition for us because he was the kind of fighter that we needed.

“And it was really difficult when he had to make that decision to sign with Top Rank, because they froze us out completely. It’s a great learning curve, you know. Lou DiBella really had the keys to make that fight because he had Kambosos, he had the site deal, and he didn’t want to do it with us. That’s the reality. Devin was desperate to do it with us.

“When I started working with Devin we had a pact together that he would be my first undisputed champion in America…I will always remember he tried and tried and tried and tried to do the deal with us and DAZN, and in the end he found it difficult to tell me — and I knew what he had to do — and I said to him ‘I know you have to do it’ and he said to me ‘I’ll promise I’ll be back. I promise.’ But I said ‘you can’t turn this down.’ He would’ve had to turn down the opportunity to become undisputed to stay with me who couldn’t deliver him the undisputed fight.

“So when he went it was a bit of a kick in the cojones, but he promised me he’ll be back…and true to his word he’s back and I believe this relationship, win or lose, will continue.”

Former undisputed lightweight world champion Devin Haney has weighed in with his two cents on a potential blockbuster fight between undisputed champions Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and Terence Crawford.

Despite the fact there are a whopping three weight classes between the two stars, talk of a meeting has gained big traction over the last couple of months, with both men coming out publicly and saying they would be up for the task.

And Haney hinted to Fight Hub TV that, though he admires Crawford for “daring to be great,” he believes the weight difference would prove too difficult an obstacle to overcome.

Though it would undoubtedly be one of the biggest fights for many years, talk of Alvarez vs Crawford has slowed up significantly following the Mexican’s dominant win former undisputed light middleweight champion Jermell Charlo – a significantly bigger man than Crawford.

Terence Crawford

‘Bud’ has more urgent issues at hand regardless, with a second fight with Errol Spence Jr in the offing for February after Spence triggered a contractual rematch clause, though it is unclear as of yet what weight this will take place at.

Most fight fans want to see Alvarez lock horns with WBC Interim champion David Benavidez next, with Benavidez having long been considered his biggest threat at 168lbs – so much so that some have even accused ‘Canelo’ of ducking him.

However, ‘The Mexican Monster’ must get past two weight world champion Demetrius Andrade next month if is to have a hope of landing a career high payday against the Guadalajara icon.

The former undisputed lightweight champion, Devin Haney, has declared that he is prepared to do whatever it takes to continue his run of blockbuster bouts.

Haney earned the respect of the boxing community when he twice travelled to Australia to challenge for and then defend the four lightweight belts against George Kambosos Jr at such a young age.

‘The Dream’ won via wide unanimous-decisions against the Aussie twice before taking on pound-for-pound superstar, Vasily Lomachenko, in Las Vegas, where he grinded out a much tougher-fought and controversial decision.

Gervonta Tank Davis

Now, Haney is aiming to taking things one step further, moving up to super-lightweight and beginning life at 140lbs against the division’s WBC champion, Regis Prograis.

However, that challenge has not stopped talk of potential fights between the youngster and some of the other poster boys of the 135 scene, in Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis and Shakur Stevenson.

In an interview with Fight Hype, Haney confirmed that he is happy to face ‘Tank’ when the timing is right and that he is willing to sacrifice in order to make the all-American clash happen.

Davis has 27 knockouts from 29 wins, and is coming off the back of career-best victory over Ryan Garcia.

First, Haney will attempt to become a two-division world champion against Prograis, headlining a card that takes place on December 9 and is available to watch live on DAZN PPV in the US and as a part of the regular subscription for UK viewers.

Devin Haney disagrees with Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe about it being too soon for a fight between him and Gervonta Davis. Haney thinks that a match between him and Tank is the biggest in boxing right now and doesn’t need to be marinated for years & years in order to extract as much money from the public. The Mayweather Promotions marination model hurts the sport, as it prevents big fights involving the only star in their stable from fighting the opposition that fans want to see him against. Obviously,  they’re assuming that because marinating worked for Floyd with his mega-fight with Manny Pacquiao, it will work with their flagship fighter Tank Davis, who has yet to fight an A-level fighter during his 10-year pro career. Financially, it worked for Mayweather to let the Pacquiao fight marinate until both guys were old. It wasn’t a good deal for the fans, as they paid $100 per household on PPV to watch a boring contest involving a gunshy Manny and Floyd using his normal safety-first style
You have to wonder whether Showtime Boxing would be getting dropped if Tank Davis had been fighting the guys that fans have wanted to see him fight for the last ten years instead of an assortment of old-washed fighters and bottom-barrel-fringe contenders. Some fans believe PBC & Mayweather Promotions are protecting their investment with Tank Davis together most money possible out of him by putting him in against beatable opposition and steering him away from fighters like Haney (30-0,15 KOs)  & Shakur Stevenson until he’s at the end of his career with nothing left. “I’m willing to do what it takes to make the biggest fights happen. I’ve proven that. I’ve signed with other networks and promoters to make the fights happen,” said Devin Haney to Fighthype on whether he would sign with Mayweather Promotions & PBC to get the Gervonta Davis fight. Will Mayweather Promotions let Tank Davis fight Haney if he looks bad & loses to RegisPrograis on December 9th? If they’re willing to match Tank against fighters like Ryan Garcia, a boxer/influencer, and Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero, they’ll gladly put him in with Haney if he’s coming off a loss to Prograis.

Gervonta Tank Davis

After all, if they drag their feet any longer, it could be too late to make the fight if Haney loses to Prograis and a couple of other guys at 140. He arguably lost his last fight against Vasily Lomachenko. There are four or five fighters in the 140-lb division that would likely beat Haney and send his career plummeting. “So, we got to see what position I’m in if they were to offer a fight. At times, I could do that, and sometimes, I  couldn’t do that as far as jumping over whatever. “But I’m willing to do whatever it takes to make the biggest fights happen. I think so,” said Haney when asked if a fight between him and Tank Davis is the biggest fight in boxing.
