Gervonta Davis vs. Ryan Garcia, again. But in 2024. Things haven’t changed drastically since last April, when ‘KingRy’ took a knee and never got up. There have been rematch talks, but those never got the full swing. What if they roll it back later this year? Would you splash the cash to see them exchanging blows once more? There are enough ifs that might spell disaster for the probable rematch and your pocket.

What do you need for a thrilling rematch? Unfinished business, the right money, a perfect time to schedule the fight, and the hype from fans. Even if one is missing, you could guess the outcome of the mega-event. It seems Davis vs. Garcia is headed the same way if the fight is made and might be a fader event to their first match, which sold 1.1 million PPVs and collected $22.8 million in revenue.

Gervonta Davis vs. Ryan Garcia: timing might spoil the fun

Since ‘Tank’ put Garcia, 25, on the canvas last year, he has been away from the boxing ring. It will be almost 14 months when, and if, he unloads those heavy punches against the rumored Frank Martin in June. Meanwhile, Garcia made some hard calls, made a switch, returned to the winner’s column against Oscar Duarte, and now stands close to realizing his championship dream against Devin Haney.

So what’s the holdup? Well, both are spearheading their careers in different divisions now. Davis, at 29-0, is living a champion’s life at 135 and feels comfortable where he belongs. On the other hand, Garcia, at 24-1, is already eyeing a future at 140 pounds and might be unwilling to come to Davis’ terms of catchweight and rehydration clause. He believes he paid the price for accepting terms favorable to Davis. So, he will be reluctant to rush recklessly into the opportunity to avenge his defeat.

Moreover, when both make a call on their rematch, the lightweight division’s landscape will appear different. Either both Americans will stand tall as champions and create an organic demand for the rematch, or one will have to kick-start his career after a defeat and the demand for a rematch dies off. That’s not it. The fans don’t want to relive the short, lopsided fight of 2023.

The punctured buzz and no wave of excitement

The way Garcia went down when Davis landed heavy body blows was disheartening for the fans. They wanted a competitive fight with high-paced action. But in return, they had a one-sided affair. There is neither some unfinished business nor some controversy that could warrant a rematch.

The gulf of skills between the two fighters was apparent that night, and it doesn’t appear Garcia would have bridged it within two years. While the Victorville native has exhibited improvement under Derrick James‘ tutelage, he is far removed from a finished product. Therefore, the fans haven’t exactly flooded the internet and demanded an immediate rematch between the two.

After a year-long hiatus, Gervonta Davis is expected to return to the ring on 15 June against undefeated opponent Frank Martin. And the banter between the duo seems to have started with a sparring session. Earlier today, the Baltimore native turned to social media to warn his upcoming opponent for making some bold claims about their old sparring session.

‘Tank’ Davis hasn’t fought anyone since defeating Ryan Garcia in April last year, so fans have been eagerly awaiting his return. Even though nothing has been finalized yet, the back and forth between them points in the right direction. Meanwhile, one of Martin’s interviews with Naji seems to have rubbed Davis the wrong way!

Gervonta Davis threatens to upload the sparring video

Turning to X (formerly Twitter), a user shared a clip from Martin’s interview with Naji from Cigar Talk. In the clip, Naji questioned Martin about his sparring session with Davis, where Martin allegedly got hurt, something Davis had also claimed. In response, Martin boldly claimed that it was “Big Cap.” He went as far as to say that things were the opposite way around.

Claiming he never got hurt, Martin stated, “I hurt that ni***.” Of course, ‘Tank’ Davis wasn’t going to have any of it, so he quickly hopped on the platform to reveal the truth. In a now-deleted tweet, Davis wrote, “Keep talking.. Ima upload the video.” What’s more, a social media post from Davis might just have confirmed his fight next month.

‘Tank’ Davis confirms fight is in June

Despite no official word, as per reports, Davis and Martin may share the limelight with David Benavidez and his opponent Oleksandr Gvozdyk. The fight will also see Davis’ WBA lightweight title on the line. More importantly, Davis might have confirmed his fight date with a post on social media. He shared a picture from his fight against Ryan Garcia and simply wrote “June” in the caption.

Moreover, Davis’ fans interpreted the post in several different ways. While some thought he was teasing a rematch against Ryan Garcia, others thought it was a warning for Martin. However, given Garcia is slated to fight Devin Haney on April 20, that fight is unlikely to happen. The post most likely was Davis’ way of predicting what he would do to his next opponent, i.e. Martin.

With that said, a fight between Gervonta Davis and Frank Martin has started to seem real, but only time will tell whether Davis gets to enter the ring again. Who do you think would win if the duo collided in June?

On the 15th of June, Gervonta Davis, now Abdul Wahid having converted to Islam, is expected to return against Frank Martin after the last fight against Ryan Garcia in April 2023. Although Martin sparred with Davis in the past and understands Davis’ approach to boxing, several people doubt if the undefeated lightweight boxer will have a chance against ‘Tank’. For example, even though Eddie Hearn felt the fight would be “good for numbers,” he claimed Martin would be “an easy fight“.

Meanwhile, Oscar De La Hoya could not understand why Davis was fighting Martin, a fighter whose fights ‘Golden Boy’ had never seen. At this, Devin Haney, ahead of his fight against Ryan Garcia on April 20th, offered his views on Martin taking on Davis.

Devin Haney doesn’t find Frank Martin’s skills convincing enough

As of now, Frank Martin has fought and won 18 fights. Out of the 18 victories, he has won 12 of his fights via knockouts. Although Martin is 29, only two of his fights were scheduled for 12 rounds. And against Michel Rivera and Artem Harutyunyan, Martin went the distance of 12 rounds to win the fights via UD. Additionally, among other experienced fighters, Martin has fought Ryan Kielczweski, Romero Duno, and Jackson Marinez. As a result, Devin Haney feels Martin lacks the experience one requires to face someone as elite as Gervonta Davis.

I think that ‘Tank’ beats him. I mean we haven’t seen Frank Martin at the highest level, the elite level. Not saying that he isn’t elite. But, we just haven’t seen him,” said Devin Haney. “Do I think he’s going to go in there and lay down? No. I think he going to go in there to get his respect. And he gon’ fight back,” he added.

And provided the resume ‘Tank’ has built over the years, echoing Eddie Hearn, Haney said, “But, I just think that ‘Tank’ has the experience, has his skills, and will be victorious.” “But, will it be easy? I can’t say. But, do I think that Frank Martin is gonna go in there and show that he is a contender? Yes,” Haney concluded.

Meanwhile, while Devin Haney thinks Gervonta Davis’ skills exceed Martin’s, Frank had said that Davis was not the most powerful puncher he faced in the ring. Well, ahead of the Leo Santa Cruz fight, Frank, working as a training partner, helped Davis prepare for the fight. After a “good experience” with Davis, on being asked if Davis had the most powerful punches, Martin had replied, “Nah, it’s a Mexican boxer I sparred [with]. His name is Pablo.”

There could be a massive title fight later this year.

Isaac Cruz’s manager believes his fighter could be set to run it back with Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis.

Cruz and Davis fought three years ago, with the current WBA lightweight champion coming out on top, but the fight announced the Mexican to a wider boxing audience due to his credible performance.

Davis is rumoured to be fighting Frank Martin in June to defend his belt, while Cruz’s next clash is with Rolley Romero on March 30 (live on Amazon in the US).

The winner of Cruz vs. Romero would not be mandatory for any fighter, but both would be well placed to line up another fighter as the WBA super lightweight champion, a weight class in which Davis has fought before. Gibbons believes that an impressive showing against Romero would put him in control.

“Pitbull’ will come out of this a star, and if he really whacks ‘Rolly,’ all he has to do is stand up in that ring and ask, ‘Gervonta, what do you want now?’” Gibbons said, reported BoxingScene.com.

“There’s a real mystique about ‘Pitbull,’ and that opportunity to look sensational against ‘Rolly’ exists because [Romero] tends to just stand there … this might be a slow beatdown and a fight that steals the show.”

He continued, discussing the outcome Cruz and Davis won their respective fights ahead, saying: “If both win, this fight should happen,” Gibbons said.

Paulie Malignaggi believes that regardless of the strength in depth at both lightweight and super lightweight, one man stands above all of the others.

The outspoken New Yorker thinks that when all is said and done, that Shakur Stevenson will rise above his contemporaries, including Gervonta “Tank” Davis if they were to ever box.

Newark star Stevenson is 21-0 (10 KOs) and a talented former Olympian who failed to dazzle last time out posting a decision win over Edwin De Los Santos in November.

But Malignaggi is sold on Stevenson’s talent.

“Excitement value and effectiveness don’t necessarily go hand in hand,” said Malignaggi. “I know Gervonta is a more exciting fighter, I know he’s more of a fan-favourite, but Shakur Stevenson’s effectiveness makes him the best fighter between 135-pounds and 140. Nobody beats him between those weight classes, even those weight classes are stacked with talent.

“I know Gervonta’s a fan-favourite, there’s an emotional response when people are fan favourites of a fighter. We see it with Canelo all the time, people love a fighter so much that they start going in to denial about what he can do, and I do believe that Gervonta Davis’ boxing ability is underrated because he punches so hard, people more focus on his power, but Shakur Stevenson is the most cerebral fighter in boxing today.”

Southpaw Stevenson turned pro in 2017, and his inner-circle includes the likes of Terence Crawford and Andre Ward. Stevenson won the vacant WBC lightweight belt against De Los Santos

“This guy is the best pure boxer in the sport, no one can touch him, no one can beat him, including elite level guys,” Malignaggi continued, during a ProBox TV Sparring Sessions show. “Shakur Stevenson would beat Gervonta Davis and he’d make it look pretty easy.

“I’ll tell you what, Gervonta’s power is always a wild card, but Shakur Stevenson is way too good. Shakur is the most effective fighter in the sport. It wasn’t exciting against De Los Santos, he still dominated a dangerous guy, a guy who’s a dangerous puncher, it doesn’t matter how exciting you think he was.

“We’re talking about who wins. Whether it’s exciting, whether it’s boring, Shakur will beat you and that’s the bottom line.

“If he’s looked at the right way, he will be the No. 1 fighter pound-for-pound in the world one day.”

Gervonta Davis, boxing’s knockout king, is returning to the ring! After his spectacular seventh-round KO over Ryan Garcia last year, Davis is now set to headline a PBC on Prime Video pay-per-view event. Davis is looking to make a statement. He recently inherited the WBA lightweight title after the former undisputed champion Devin Haney moved up in weight.

Standing in his way is the tough and resilient Frank Martin. Martin’s last fight was a close decision win, solidified by a dramatic 12th-round knockdown. He’s no stranger to taking on tough competition, with victories over Michel Rivera and Jackson Marinez under his belt. This would be a great battle between two southpaw boxers. Even the undercard fights of this event has everybody whispering.

The main-card roster revealed for June 15th

Gervonta Davis’ boxing trainer Calvin Ford surprised the fans with stellar names for the main card of the Davis-Martin event via his Instagram story. Well, the first names that would sparkle the eyes of the beholder, besides the main event, are none other than that of David Benavidez and Oleksandr Gvozdyk. This would highlight the night as the co-main event, and this is the first fight of Benavidez at 175. Moreover, as per the WBC, the winner of this bout will go and face the winner of the undisputed clash between Artur Beterbiev vs. Dmitry Bivol.

The next in line is the rematch between Edwin De Los Santos and Jose Valenzuela. In September 2022, Edwin De Los Santos and Jose Valenzuela collided in a high-stakes battle that saw both fighters hitting the canvas in the second round. Despite the early setback, De Los Santos rallied and sent Valenzuela crashing to the canvas once again in the third round.

The next fight had David Benavidez’s rival Demetrius Andrade going against David Morrell. This might seem a bit anticlimactic since Morrell had been trying his hardest to land a fight against Benavidez, but now he will have to face his previous opponent instead. However, if he manages to win this fight, his chances of facing ‘The Mexican Monster’ will increase drastically. So it’s still a great opportunity for the boxer. It will be a jam-packed main card, as all these fights seem quite interesting and relevant. What are your thoughts about these undercard fights? Let us know in the comments section.

In April, Ryan Garcia accepted a catchweight clash at 136 pounds against Gervonta Davis, which included a contractual rehydration clause limiting the weight gain to 10 pounds for the morning weigh-in the day of the fight.

Despite suffering a seventh-round knockout loss, Garcia disclosed that he felt weak and weight-drained, emphasizing that this compromise was necessary to ensure the bout would take place and Davis wouldn’t withdraw at the last minute.

For his efforts, Garcia earned a paycheck of approximately $30 million and is now gearing up for a comeback fight at 140 pounds against Oscar Duarte (26-1-1, 21 KOs) on December 2 at the Toyota Center in Houston, airing on DAZN.

While the 25-year-old Garcia (23-1, 19 KOs) acknowledges the challenges he faced against Davis, he doesn’t believe Davis is unbeatable, and he has hardly hidden his desire for a rematch, albeit under more favorable conditions.

Garcia doesn’t care about Davis’ stipulations ahead of possible rematch

In an interview with BoxingScene.com, Garcia commented on Davis and criticized him for his out-of-ring antics.

“Davis will never fight me at 140. This guy will never fight anybody at a fair thing. He just won’t. He won’t chance it. He really doesn’t have that dog in him. He doesn’t have that spirit of an old-school fighter. But I don’t care,” Garcia told BoxingScene.com

Reflecting on the Davis bout which he lost, Garcia contends that it wasn’t a genuine contest, describing himself as ‘half-a-man’.

“We didn’t really run it. That wasn’t really a fight. It was half-a-man versus a dude that, even when he dropped me, he didn’t really want to engage either, to be honest,” he added.

Garcia plans to make a mark in the super lightweight division, aiming to replicate his successful run before 2020.

He envisions becoming a champion at 140 pounds and then seeking a rematch with Davis, asserting that he is now a more committed and focused fighter than he was during their initial encounter. With an eye on the future, Garcia is determined to secure a world championship at 140 pounds, defeat Davis in a rematch, and set his sights on limitless opportunities ahead.

“I plan on going on a run like I did prior to 2020 when I was just killing it,” Garcia concluded.

Gervonta Davis has continued his recent run of social media activity by taking aim at Ryan Garcia.

Tank has been embroiled in a war of words with Devin Haney over the past week following Haney’s impressive win over Regis Prograis.

Now that he has the WBC super-lightweight world title, many fans want to see a fight between Haney and Davis next.

However, it admittedly looks unlikely to materialise in the immediate future.

It was revealed this week that Haney rehydrated from the 140lbs super-lightweight limit up to 165lbs by the time he entered the ring for the Prograis fight.

Davis, who normally fights in the 135lbs lightweight divison, has previously implemented a 136lbs catchweight and 10lbs maximum rehydration clause for his biggest fight to date against Garcia.

This is something Haney is adamant he will not agree to after Garcia warned of how he was negatively affected by these stipulations.

Garcia took to Twitter on Saturday and gave his thoughts on the situation as he said: “Devin Haney coming in over 160lbs from 140lbs is actually crazy! But bot against the rules!”

“Tank will not fight you without the clauses! After March when I get this title from Rolly Romero, we will unify on a special date how does that sound @RealDevinHaney?”

Davis fired back: “Do you want me to beat your ass again? Because it was easier than taking candy from a baby.”

Tank also mocked Haney.

He posted an image showing how his rival watched his win over Garcia as a fan at ringside.

Davis captioned the post: “When idols become rivals.”

After losing to Gervonta Davis in April, Ryan Garcia is looking for a rematch, arguing that when they met, he wasn’t at his best.

In an interview with Fight Hub TV, ‘KingRy’ said he is better than Gervonta and will do whatever it takes to get a rematch.

“I wanna get my rematch at the right weight,” Garcia told Fight Hub TV. “He knows it wasn’t who I really was, I don’t really care what anyone says, I don’t fight like that.

“I’m way better than that, and I’m better than him. I don’t care if he beat me, I’m better than him. Give me my rematch and I’ll beat him.

“I’m going to build myself up again… If I’ve gotta go through a Teofimo Lopez or a Devin Haney to get that, then I’m gonna do it.”

The 25-year-old boxer indicated that he will continue to fight at between 140 and 147 pounds until he steps back into the ring against ‘Tank’, according to The Sportster.

The possibility of a rematch between the two doesn’t look that complex, as the Garcia-Gervonta fight reportedly had more than 1.2 million PPV buys and generated approximately $22.8 million from ticket sales.

Gervonta won’t fight again until 2024

In September, Gervonta said he would not fight for the remainder of 2023 and would focus on personal issues.

It should be recalled that the boxer is tied up in a legal matter related to a hit-and-run incident in May 2021.

And although he wasn’t initially expected to serve jail time, he ended up spending most of a 90-day sentence in prison.

Ryan Garcia might not have been able to handle Gervonta Davis’ body shot in their last fight! However, he seems to be really good at throwing them. In a recent pinch, one of Garcia’s security guards proposed a body shot challenge to Garcia. It’s something ‘King Ry’ is well aware of, having done in the past. However, this time, it resulted in him becoming the butt of the joke.

The viral challenge involves an individual delivering devastating body shots to someone, either wearing protective gear or otherwise. So, Garcia didn’t hesitate when the challenge was proposed to him by his guard. Hours earlier, the Victorville native turned to social media to share the clip of the challenge with his followers. Here’s what happened!

Ryan Garcia had to be stopped from punching the guard repeatedly

Turning to Instagram, Garcia shared the clip with a caption that read, “I do not know why he agreed to this @fiercereflex. [I am] Not sure if I will do this challenge again. He’s actually hurt.” Meanwhile, in the clip, Garcia addressed that his guard challenged him and claimed, “I haven’t done this in years. But it’s about time that I bring it back.

As he started punching his guard, who was wearing protective gear, Garcia seemingly lost control. Someone from Garcia’s team had to intervene to stop him after ten or so shots. Having absorbed so many ferocious blows, even the guard looked devastated. Despite that, fans decided to roast Garcia in the comments of the post.

Fan highlights Garcia lost control

Following the past few weeks, Garcia’s social media accounts have seen a bump in traffic because of his bizarre posts. And this one was no different. After the clip went live, hundreds, if not thousands of people, decided to pen their thoughts. One user poked fun at Garcia by claiming the guard is better at taking body shots than Garcia. It, of course, was a callback to when Garcia allegedly quit after taking a body shot from Davis. The user wrote, “He takes better body shots than you.”

The next user suggested Garcia had the Bohemian Grove incident imprinted in his mind while punching. Previously, during one of his X rants, Garcia had claimed he was taken to Bohemian Grove and forced to do certain things. The user wrote, “Bro was thinking about Bohemian Grove when punching.”

The next user highlighted that Garcia had lost control during the challenge and could not stop punching. “Bro didn’t wanna stop,” the user commented. However, it’s worth mentioning that Garcia seemed to be concerned by the very end of the clip about his guard.

Someone else echoed the same sentiment, questioning, “wtf is wrong with Ryan? He didn’t want to stop.” It’s plausible that Garcia was putting on a persona for the camera.

Meanwhile, the last user mockingly suggested that after the clip, no one’s going to want to do the challenge with Garcia. The user wrote, “No one going to want to do the body shot challenge anymore.”

With all the drama surrounding his mental health, Ryan Garcia shared a comparatively normal post on social media. However, fans seem to have decided to make him the laughing stock because of the video. Let us know your thoughts.
