Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis and Frank Martin are set to collide for the WBA lightweight title this summer, and now the potential date of the fight has been revealed.

Davis is coming off an emphatic seventh-round stoppage over social media sensation Ryan Garcia –who himself is now training for his shot at the WBC world super lightweight title against Devin Haney on April 20.

Since that destructive performance in April last year, Davis has been linked with several names in other divisions, including Conor Benn, but has turned his attention to face Martin.

Martin shone in a scintillating performance against Michel Rivera back in 2022 when the American slickster showcased his refined skills, headlining his biggest show at the Chelsea Ballroom in Las Vegas.

In April last year, the 29-year-old returned to Sin City where he took on undefeated German Artem Harutyunyan coming away with a unanimous decision victory.

Esteemed coach Derrick James trains Martin, and he anticipates the Davis vs. Martin showdown will land on June 15, according to Boxing Scene.

It means that in the upcoming weeks and months, James will have his hands completely full, with Martin and also Garcia, another fighter trained by James, dialled in on the daunting tasks ahead of them.

The American coach looks to get back to winning ways, with his fighters Errol Spence Jr and Jermell Charlo both losing to pound-for-pound elites last year, with Spence beaten by Terence Crawford, and Charlo losing to Canelo Alvarez.

Shakur Stevenson expressed shock at what he saw in that whooping after seeing the leaked sparring footage of Gervonta Davis smashing Devin Haney on social media.

Shakur(21-0, 10KOs) a 26-year old boxer from the United States, shared on social media his response to the footage that had been leaked showing Devin Haney(31-0, 15KOs) being beaten by Gervonta Davis(29-0, 27KOs) during battle. Following one of his worst games of the season against Edwin De Los Santos in November, Tank took Stevenson’s remark as a challenge and promptly sent the New Jersey native a terrifying message.

After watching the leaked footage of Tank Davis working over Haney during a 2017 sparring session, the undefeated WBC lightweight champion Shakur appeared shocked and said he had never received such a severe punishment in training. Tank said in response to his tweet that he would “know what’s up, too,” implying that in the event of a fight, he would receive the same treatment.

“Never in my life have I taken punishment like that by any fighter, good lord,” said Shakur in a post on X. It’s unclear from Shakur’s response to the video whether he is expressing fear towards Tank or if he is only recognizing what he saw while watching it. In any case, it appears that Tank saw it as a challenge, because he responded with a mysterious message.

“You know what’s up, too,” replied Davis to Shakur’s post. The plain meaning of the message is to warn Shakur of the consequences of ever mixing it up with Tank Davis in the ring, as well as the harsh treatment he would get similar to what he saw with Haney in the leaked sparring video.

Tank’s response demonstrated his willingness to intimidate opponents in order to warn them of what to anticipate if they cross paths with him. Stevenson is a defensive artist trained in the striking and avoid-being-hit style of fighting taught by Pernell Whitaker. But as we seen during last November’s bout versus De Los Santos, fans at the T-Mobile booed Shakur constantly, indicating that his style is not very entertaining to watch. Shakur was treated like a leper and rejected by the elite fighters at 135 as a result of his performance, and they didn’t want anything to do with him.

The old Devin HaneyGervonta Davis (now Abdul Wahid) sparring footage is back in the news. Reportedly disclosed, it might have finally put to rest the varied claims made over the years. However, no doubt, it has stirred the hornet’s nest. A string of controversies, assertions, and rebuttals seems to have marred the upcoming Ryan Garcia-Devin Haney fight. But rising featherweight star Bruce Carrington believes one has to be a bit circumspect while leaping to conclusions based on a clip.

Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney are going to meet in a month’s time at New York’s Barclays Center. The duo will fight for the latter’s WBC light welterweight belt. FightHype caught up with Bruce Carrington at New York’s Turning Stone Resort Casino. The venue hosted the Raymond FordOtabek Kholmatov title clash.

Bruce Carrington: ‘The Dream’ vs. ‘Tank’ sparring

Three weeks ago, the 26-year-old Brooklyn-born featherweight achieved a new milestone in his over-two-year-old career. He became the new occupant of the vacant IBF Inter-Continental, NABF, and WBO Inter-Continental featherweight championships. He knocked out Philippines-born, Norway-based boxer Bernard Torres in the fourth round, delivering a statement victory. FightHype’s Javon Hill asked, “I want to get your opinion on the sparring the leaked sparring Ryan leak of a Tank and Devin. What do you think about that?

Bruce Carrington replied, “Oh yeah, no, that made that was crazy you already know that’s gonna cause a lot of controversy.” However, he seemingly cautioned. He perhaps wanted everyone to understand that, after all, Devin Haney was just sixteen when the sparring happened. Gervonta Davis (now Abdul Wahid) had yet to commence his world championship-winning spree. However, he was already twenty-one and a veteran of nearly a dozen fights. So definitely, that gave him an advantage over young Haney

But you guys got to put a lot of things into play. Devin was 16; you know what I mean, and that would give you definitely you know, Tank more of a edge on that,” Carrington said. But from ‘Shu Shu’s perspective, the footage might give some hints.

Not just what it appears

Certain aspects of the boxers that they might have seemingly carried back from those days. Hence, when studied in relation to the upcoming battle, it makes for an intriguing insight.

Bruce Carrington said, “But I still see the little things that both fighters still do from back in that back in the day when they did spar, so very interesting perspective that is putting into the potential fight to come up, man. It definitely got a lot of people, like, you know, a ringing, and got a lot of people like watching out for this fight.

Many followers would be keenly watching out for how the leaked footage plays out the thoughts and emotions of both boxers in the run-up to the big fight. But for sure, with over four weeks still separating the two from slugging it out, they can look forward to some more fireworks played out in one form or another.

The mind games between Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia have taken a strange turn stemming from Garcia leaking an old sparring video featuring Haney.

Garcia apparently thought a sparring session from nine years ago showing Haney getting hit hard by Gervonta Davis was a clever way to get under his opponent’s skin.

Haney responded by not seeming to be fazed at all, writing on X he made a bet to get in the ring with Davis and it paid off for him.

Haney and Garcia are doing a good job of selling this fight, even if some of the verbal sparring is going way over the top.

During a press conference on Tuesday, Garcia vowed to retire if he gets knocked out in the first round when pressed by Devin’s father, Bill Haney.

“If you get knocked out in the first round, are you going to retire?,” Bill Haney asked.

“I’ll give you my word,” Garcia replied.

Haney threatened to boycott that press conference, because he felt Garcia was wasting everyone’s time with all of the outside noise.

Gervonta Davis

Garcia’s decision to show a video of Haney getting hit hard by Davis was interesting because Tank handed Garcia his first—and to date, only—career loss with a seventh-round TKO in April 2023.

Even though the outcome of that bout was pretty lopsided, with Garcia getting knocked down twice before the TKO, it was a massive financial success with an estimated 1.2 million pay-per-view buys in the United States.

Haney is an ascending superstar in the sport with a 31-0 record. A fight with Garcia that could do tremendous business will only help raise his profile, especially if he comes out of the bout with a victory.

The Haney-Garcia showdown for the WBC super lightweight championship will take place on April 20 in Las Vegas.

It appears that talk of Chris Eubank Jr. vs. Conor Benn refuses to go away.

‘Next Gen’ and ‘The Destroyer’ were slated to clash in late 2022 in the biggest fight of the latter’s career. However, as the story goes, Benn failed a drug test. He was pulled from the fight and missed a year of his career as a result.

After his suspension was up, the two attempted to re-book the bout. However, the BBBofC refused to sanction Benn, and Eubank Jr. decided to move on. As a result, the welterweight defeated Peter Dobson in America in his return earlier this month.

Following the bout, Benn was in discussions to fight Gervonta Davis. Eddie Hearn went as far as sending a $10 million offer to ‘Tank’. However, the lightweight champion has instead decided to box Frank Martin later this year.

As a result, Benn is now back at the drawing board. However, it seems that he may not be without an opponent for long. In a recent interview with TalkSport, Chris Eubank Jr’s promoter, Kalle Sauerland, spoke about the bout.

There, the promoter refuted the idea that they were deep in talks about the bout. However, Sauerland also added

Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney came face-to-face officially during the kick-off press conference in New York’s Palladium Times Square. None of the antics that fans and followers saw at the Super Bowl Radio Row were on display. Nevertheless, the meeting turned out to be as heated as could be expected. Later, ‘KingRy’ spoke to a few reporters.

They might have been interested in the upcoming bout on April 20. However, some of the media personnel seemed keen to know the young boxer’s views on another tentative mega-clash. Per the available accounts, Gervonta Davis (now Abdul Wahid) and Frank Martin have reportedly agreed to fight. The duo will purportedly duke it out for the latter’s WBA lightweight championship, most possibly by the second quarter of the year.

‘The Ghost’ busters ‘Tank’: Ryan Garcia

One of the reporters asked, “Have you sparred Frank Martin?” Garcia replied, “No.” The reporter continued. On the one hand, both he and Martin underwent training together in Derrick James‘ stable. But then, on the other hand, he has had the chance to fight the Baltimorean as well. Hence, “But you trained alongside him and obviously you and obviously you’ve been in the ring with Gervonta. Who are you taking in that fight, man?” The reporter asked.

‘KingRy’ responded, “I’m going to I’m going to go with Frank because I’m going to be there every step of the way and put him on game like this is what he likes to do, this is what he will do bo boom.” Though, subsequently, he sounded unsure when the reporter wanted to know whether he believed Frank Martin would be able to force an early stoppage on ‘Tank.

The reporters were initially curious to know about Ryan Garcia’s views on Gervonta Davis (now Abdul Wahid) not pursuing a fight with Devin Haney from a boxing perspective. The former interim lightweight title holder replied that the reason he felt this was because ‘Tank’ is more of a ‘business-oriented fighter’.

Unite for a Fight

Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney will fight for the latter’s WBC light welterweight title. The talks for a match between the two ignited soon after ‘KingRy’ stopped Oscar Duarte in his comeback fight. In the beginning, it seemed that the bout was a done deal. However, talks broke down with Garcia picking Rolando ‘Rollie’ Romero over Haney. It’s a different fact; even that fight never came to fruition.

Later in January, after passing over Jose Ramirez and Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz‘s names, talks with Team Haney resumed. But unlike last time, the deal sailed through, much to the relief of millions of fans who wanted to see the duo fight. Instead of the earlier-decided Las Vegas, the fight will now take place in the ‘Big Apple’s famed Barclays Center.

In a surprising twist at the New York press conference, the air buzzed with anticipation. The date was set, the Barclays Center awaited the April 20 showdown between Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney. Yet, amidst fight hype, an unexpected moment stole headlines. Garcia, once embroiled in a heated feud with Bernard Hopkins, shifted gears dramatically.

Their past clashes, filled with sharp words and public spats, seemed poised for a new chapter. The tension dissolved not with a brawl, but with a potential hug in the offing.

What’s greatness?

Garcia, with a determined stride, approached the podium where Hopkins stood. “Bernard, you want to squash the beef for real?” he asked, his voice cutting through the silence. Hopkins, without missing a beat, replied, “We don’t have no beef,” his response signaling an openness to bury the hatchet.

The tension that had once simmered between them as Garcia called him out for losing to Joe Smith. The audience, momentarily holding its breath, exhaled as Garcia and Hopkins shook hands. This handshake, a symbol of their newfound understanding, bridged the gap created by past disagreements. Hopkins seized the opportunity to impart wisdom, not just to Garcia but to all present.

Continuing his address, Hopkins reflected on the essence of true greatness in boxing. “See when it comes to knowing and my partner can verify this. Oscar when it comes to knowing greatness, I lost my first pro fight and I told Ryan in the dressing room it ain’t how you start it’s how you finish. You must understand that because the great ones that came up from wherever they came up off the ground, out of the penitential anywhere else and they became great but it’s very few. There are very few who will continue to keep that mindset that it ain’t over until it’s over. Ryan’s career starts with this fight here as far as I’m concerned,” he eloquently expressed, downplaying the Davis’ loss.

This dialogue, rich in respect and wisdom, not only showcased their ability to move past previous conflicts but also highlighted Hopkins’ role as a mentor. Bill Haney also talked about their relationship in the same conference.

Questioning the Ryan Garcia-Hopkins alliance amidst lingering tensions

Bill Haney cast a shadow of doubt over the renewed camaraderie. He addressed the former world champion and the young contender, suggesting, “You know special uh uh takeaway shot to Bernard and…Ryan but I’m glad they made up, so take him…Bernard and show him that shoulder roll.”

Adding an element of challenge, Haney invoked Floyd Mayweather Jr. and a famous Jay-Z line, stating, “Bernard Floyd Ryan, all y’all get together ain’t none of that sht going to help on 4/20; it’s lit and everybody’s in it, and y’all going to pay for all the sht like Jay-Z says, ‘from all them years that you hold us’ yeah, you going to pay 4/20 is smoke, and we ain’t letting up.” This statement underscored the competitive spirit and hinted at unresolved issues, despite the public display of unity between Garcia and Hopkins.

How will this restored rapport between Garcia and Hopkins influence the outcome of the upcoming fight? Will the past indeed be left behind, or will it resurface in the heat of competition?

Ryan Garcia fought Gervonta Davis last April.

One of the biggest fights of 2023 was the clash between Ryan Garcia and the hard-hitting Gervonta Davis.

This matchup saw two of boxing’s biggest stars go head-to-head in Las Vegas in a contest which generated huge interest and PPV buys.

During his meteoric rise, Garcia frequently called out Davis and finally got his wish, but he was unable to beat “Tank” who managed to knock down Garcia twice before the fight was stopped in the seventh round.

The loss to Davis saw Garcia receive some criticism and was branded a ‘quitter’ by a number of fans.

When a fighter suffers a loss in a marquee bout, some struggle to come to terms with what transpired in the ring, but for Garcia, he has used his defeat to Davis to give himself a new lease of life and beat all of his rivals.

“After that Tank fight, it really changed me – it awoke my competitive spirit,” Garcia told Boxing Scene.

“When you’re going through a mental-health crisis, you don’t care about life, so me trying to get back into the sport and trying to be myself, it was a hard process.

“And then after the Tank fight, I woke up. I was like, ‘No I’m different. I’m about to go and destroy everybody now’.”

Garcia will aim to showcase this new competitive spirit on April 20 when he faces WBC super lightweight champion Devin Haney at the Barclays Center in New York and it will be broadcast live on DAZN.

Gervonta Davis has been out of the ring since his victory over Ryan Garcia in April last year. Despite initial expectations last year that he would face Devin Haney next, particularly after Haney’s recent victory against Regis Prograis, the proposed fight eventually fell through. This was because Haney had just moved up to 140 lbs and had no intention of returning to a lower weight for the significant bout. The question arises: why didn’t Davis move up to face Haney instead?

This was the question even Haney had at the time when had pointed out that ‘Tank’ Davis had defeated Mario Barrios previously at 140 lbs. However, it appears that the much-desired fight may never end up happening for now. Why? Here’s what Davis’ trainer Calvin Ford had to say regarding the matter.

Gervonta Davis struggled to make weight against Mario Barrios

It appears that Gervonta Davis may finally be making his return to the ring after almost a year. His previous fight was against Ryan Garcia, which took place at a lightweight (135 lbs). However, his trainer, Calvin Ford, believes moving up to the super lightweight limit could be a challenge for him.

In an interview he did with ‘Hardcoreboxingnews’ a few weeks ago, Calvin Ford pointed out that Davis had previously “sparred guys in the gym at 165.” But he also acknowledged, “It’s different, Tank was hitting guys with 16-ounce gloves on.”

Even though he is confident that Davis can “pull it off”, he is also worried about other issues. He added, “There’s definitely be some damage and hydrating back up at that weight.” Moreover, he pointed out, “That’s why you have weight classes for reasons.” Addressing Tank’s fight with Barrios, he revealed, “You got to look at his last fight and then his last fight. He struggled to make 140. That’s keeping real.”

Thus, Ford doesn’t believe that it would be advisable for Davis to push himself and potentially cause harm to his body. In the meantime, here’s what Garcia thinks of Gervonta Davis’ power in retrospect of the previous bout.

Does “Tank” really pack a punch?

Ryan Garcia recently dismissed the much-hyped punching power of his former rival Gervonta Davis. He will face Devin Haney in April, marking his first fight since defeating Oscar Duarte in December. This victory was crucial for Garcia following his first career loss to Davis.

Their highly anticipated Las Vegas clash, the biggest pay-per-view of 2023, ended with Davis knocking Garcia down twice before securing a stoppage win in the seventh-round KO. However, Garcia believes Davis’ power is overstated, attributing his success to precise punching rather than raw strength.

“He can’t hit that hard, I’m telling you,” Garcia told Jack Alter, “It’s his accuracy. The punches you don’t see are the ones that hurt you, not the ones you do see.” He continued, “There are some people that even if you see it, that sh*t hurts. He’s not like that. He’s what he is. He’s an accurate sniper. He’s a sniper.”

Eddie Hearn isn’t happy with Gervonta Davis.

‘Tank’ has been in discussions with Matchroom Boxing over the last few weeks. Davis hasn’t competed since a knockout win over Ryan Garcia in April but was in discussions to face Conor Benn later this year. ‘The Destroyer’ is fresh off a lopsided decision win over Peter Dobson earlier this month.

However, talks between the lightweight champion and Hearn’s promotion are over now. Last week, the promoter alleged that Davis turned down a $25 million payday to face Benn later this year. In turn, the boxer leaked DMs and emails from Hearn about the fight.

In one of the emails, Hearn offered Davis $10 million, plus some of the gate and pay-per-view revenue, to fight Benn. However, the champion turned that offer down. With the boxer taking their private conversation public, Hearn is wondering why he even tried.

In a recent interview with Boxing Social, the head of Matchroom was asked about ‘Tank’. There, he slammed:
