Gervonta Davis has not entered the ring since defeating Ryan Garcia via seventh-round knockout back in April last year. The WBA lightweight champion recently shared his DMs with Eddie Hearn on his Instagram story, revealing that the boxing promoter and chairman of Matchroom Sport reached out to him regarding a potential bout with professional British boxer Conor Benn.

Michael Benson of talkSPORT shared a screenshot of Davis’ DMs on Twitter, captioning the post:

Fans on the popular social media platform were less than impressed with the potential bout. @_nixer suggested that Davis is ducking Devin Haney:

Despite the controversies in his career, Gervonta Davis, now Abdul Wahid after converting to Islam, has thoroughly entertained his fans through his boxing skills. Given his mature understanding of fighting, Davis has been successful in all of his professional matches. As of now, with only one title by his side, ‘Tank’ is one of the most talked-about entities in the sport.

And given his popularity and demand, several people from the boxing world have already crowned ‘Tank’ with the title of the ‘Face of Boxing’. However, veteran matchmaker, Rick Glaser feels otherwise. Likewise, in a recent statement, the 65-year-old picked Canelo Alvarez over ‘Tank’ Davis.

Rick Glaser picks Canelo Alvarez over Gervonta Davis

Undoubtedly, Gervonta Davis is one of the biggest stars currently in the sport. With a record of 29-0-0, the WBA Lightweight title holder is a dream fight for many. Of late, Bill Haney, the father of Devin Haney reported that ‘Tank’ turned down a guaranteed figure of $20 Million offered for a fight against ‘The Dream’. Today, Conor Benn and Eddie Hearn hoped for a fight against Davis next. However, despite Davis’ demand, boxing matchmaker, Rick Glaser feels the title ‘Face of Boxing’ does not belong to ‘Tank’.

Taking to X, the 65-year-old wrote, “Everyone needs to stop calling #TankDavis the “Face of Boxing”.” “How can a guy without a single legitimate endorsement be the face of anything good!!!” he added. “Look at NASCAR drivers, they are adorned with sponsors. But Tank Davis doesn’t even have one endorsement. The face of #Boxing is still #Canelo, & will be till he retires,” Glaser concluded.

At this, one must mention that the clothing brand Under Armour endorses Davis. However, Canelo Alvarez is sponsored by Anheuser-Busch InBev SA and LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton. Anyway, the point is that irrespective of what Glaser says, ‘Tank’ has an endorsement. But, here is how the fans reacted to Glaser’s statement on X.

Boxing fans jump to Davis’ defense

‘Tank’ Davis has proved himself against some of the toughest fighters in the sport already. He has defeated the likes of Leo Santa Cruz, Mario Barrios, and Ryan Garcia. In his fights, he thoroughly entertained the fans with his boxing skills. Hence, when Glaser objected to Davis’ ‘Face of Boxing’ status, several fans jumped to Gervonta’s defense.

According to one, the love for Davis’ boxing is not determined by endorsements.

Gervonta Davis, now Abdul Wahid since he converted to Islam, called out Conor Benn. After Conor Benn won his fight against Peter Dobson, ‘Tank’ took to social media and expressed his interest in fighting ‘The Destroyer’. Immediately, Benn replied to Davis with a positive message. Soon, promoter Eddie Hearn joined the conversation too.

Benn publicly declared he wanted to face none other than Gervonta Davis next in the ring. At this, although ‘Tank’ slammed Conor Benn, he instructed ‘The Destroyer’ to start preparing for the fight. Here is what happened on X.

Smell of a fight: Gervonta Davis, Conor Benn, and Eddie Hearn “on the same page”

In December, last year, Conor Benn declared on X that the winner of his potential fight with Devin Haney should face Gervonta Davis. Additionally, ‘The Destroyer’ called ‘Tank’ a “dwarf“. Now, after Benn defeated Peter Dobson on February 3rd via UD, Gervonta Davis took to X and reminded ‘The Destroyer’ that he was “still waiting”. In his reply, Benn assured ‘Tank’ that the fight was on its way. “It’s coming don’t worry,” wrote Benn. In addition, Benn tagged Eddie Hearn and asked the same to dive in.

Gervonta Davis

In his reply, Eddie Hearn wrote, “Done“. At this, Benn expected Gervonta Davis to take a screenshot of the conversation that took place between them on X. Likewise, he added, “Let’s just wait Gervunpa lumpa to screen grab the conversation“. However, the current WBA Lightweight champion, who accused Benn of cheating, replied he was on the same page as Benn and Eddie.

Following this conversation involving Eddie Hearn, Conor Benn and Gervonta Davis emphasized that they would share the ring.

A day of multiple callouts for Conor Benn!

Of late, team Devin Haney wanted to land a fight with Gervonta Davis. However, there has not been a deal. On the other hand, when Conor Benn stepped inside the ring with Peter Dobson, Errol Spence Jr. and Devin Haney mocked ‘The Destroyer’. While Spence Jr. referred to Benn’s failed VADA test, Haney questioned Benn’s power. As a result, after the fight, Benn challenged both Spence Jr. and Haney. At this, although fans expected either Benn vs. Spence Jr. or Benn vs. Haney, ‘The Destroyer’ declared he wanted ‘Tank’ next.

Likewise, Benn wrote to Davis, “Don’t be all talk either, let’s make sure this happens next.” In his reply to Benn, Davis wrote, “You doing too much talking now…stfu and get to work, see you soon”. With that said, do you think Davis and Benn will fight? Would you like to see the bout?

In the world of boxing, demands can be as flashy as the bouts themselves. Abdul Wahid, once known as Gervonta Davis, set the bar high. Two Ferraris for a fight? That’s his ask. But Turki Alalshikh’s response? Gloves, not cars. This saga unfolds with Bill Haney’s wit in the mix.

He quips about repossessing the luxury cars before they even hit the road. A Ferrari debacle, indeed. What’s behind these outlandish demands? And Alalshikh’s curt dismissal?

Two un-driven Ferraris go back to the garage

In a recent turn of events, the boxing community witnessed an intriguing exchange between Bill Haney and Abdul Wahid. The heart of the matter? A demand for two Ferraris in exchange for stepping into the ring in Saudi Arabia. Bill Haney, with his characteristic humor, recounted a conversation that caught everyone off guard. “Well, I got to call the people and tell them to put the Ferraris back,” he shared during a FightHype interview. “Turki said he’s only sending two pair of gloves for Gervonta Davis, and he going to have to pick up the rest of the money when he get to Saudi Arabia.”

The dialogue didn’t stop there. Haney’s jest about the Ferraris being “repossessed before he could even drive them” not only added a layer of humor but also highlighted the absurdity of the situation. This exchange underlines the boldness of Wahid’s demands and Turki Alalshikh’s firm stance. Alalshikh’s offer of “two gloves if you want” as a counter to the Ferrari demand signifies a return to the sport’s essence, away from its materialistic distractions

How did Davis react to Turki’s statement though?

Gervonta Davis don’t need the Saudis?

Gervonta Davis made it clear he has little interest in the material incentives offered by Turki Alalshikh. Following Alalshikh’s rather cheeky proposition in response to Davis’ lavish demands, stating on MMA Hour, “I heard Davis said ‘Send to me two Ferraris.’ I say to him – we will send you two gloves if you want. That’s it,” the boxing world was abuzz.

Not missing a beat, Davis quickly countered on X, “When did I ever need em?” This sharp exchange underscores Davis’ focus on the sport over the spoils, despite speculation about his prolonged absence potentially extending. Amidst this, whispers of Davis’ next potential opponent begin to swirl, adding another layer of intrigue to the saga.

What impact do these public negotiations have on the perception of boxing as a sport? Moreover, how will this episode influence the negotiations and demands of future fighters?

Super-lightweight contender, Ryan Garcia has issued a warning to Gervonta Davis and revealed that he is in hot pursuit of vengeance after Davis ‘did him dirty’ in their pre-fight negotiations before handing Garcia a first career defeat.

Davis knocked out ‘King Ry’ in the seventh-round in one of 2023’s most memorable pay-per-view clashes, although Garcia and his fans have maintained that he was at a severe disadvantage when he headed into the ring, after being limited by a rehydration clause.

In an interview on the PBD Podcast, Garcia outlined his intentions to avenge the lone blemish on his résumé but maintained that he wishes to do so in the fairest way possible.

Garcia went on to reveal what would be different if the fight was to happen again.

Garcia has already bounded back from the defeat with a win over Oscar Duarte in December, although the 25-year-old has struggled to secure another bout in the aftermath.

When is Gervonta Davis, aka Abdul Wahid, lacing up those gloves again? It’s a million-dollar question that has kept his fans and boxing pundits awake at night! However, one thing is for sure! He is not fighting in Saudi Arabia as His Excellency Turky Alalshikh denied Davis’ request for two Ferraris! The update comes after ‘Tank’ was offered to fight in Saudi against a familiar name.

Not long ago, Alalshikh invited Devin Haney and Gervonta Davis for a fight in Saudi as part of the Riyadh Season. While ‘The Dream’ seemed more than eager, Davis demanded two Ferraris in a tweet. So, while appearing in an interview with MMA Hour today, the man behind all the Saudi events took a dig at Davis. More importantly, Davis responded through a tweet!

Gervonta Davis doesn’t need what Turki Alalshikh is offering

Speaking to Ariel Helwani in his popular segment MMA Hour, Alalshikh finally responded to Davis’ demand. He stated, “I heard Davis said ‘Send to me two Ferraris.’ I say to him – we will send you two gloves if you want. That’s it.” Mere hours after the interview went live on YouTube, online boxing editor Michael Benson picked up the story and shared it on X.

As one would guess, ‘Tank’ quickly found the tweet from Benson and responded to Alalshikh’s sly dig at him. Davis retorted, “When did I ever need em?” Davis might not think he needs anything from the Saudi advisor, but his ever-expanding absence from the sport may soon turn into a whole year out of the ring. Meanwhile, a name is being touted around as Davis’ next opponent!

Business partner to Floyd Mayweather on Davis’ next fight

Not long ago, a report from Ring Magazine suggested Davis is expected to fight an unknown opponent in the summer in the United Kingdom. And the name that has been making the rounGervonta Davisds on the internet as his next potential opponent is Frank Martin. While there’s no concrete evidence behind it, Leonard Ellerbe thinks even if they fought, ‘Tank’ has nothing to worry about!

While appearing in an interview with Fight Hype on February 1, the reporter brought up the question. Was Gervonta Davis fighting Martin? While Ellerbe did not confirm anything, he claimed, “Frank Martin can’t beat ‘Tank’ Davis. None of those guys can beat Tank Davis. Frank’s a good a** fighter. He can’t beat ‘Tank’ though.”

With Gervonta Davis’ absence from the ring nearing a whole year, it appears ‘Tank’ won’t be fighting in Saudi Arabia anytime soon, if ever after that exchange. However, if the Frank Martin rumors are true, Davis fans may finally breathe a sigh of relief! What did you think about the exchange on X? When, where, and who do you think ‘Tank’ will fight?

Acouple of weeks ago, Saudi adviser Turki Alalshikh – who has been in charge of delivering big boxing events for Saudi Arabia – mentioned wanting to bring Gervonta “Tank” Davis to his country to square off against Devin Haney.

Davis responded on Twitter shortly after, revealing that he had gotten upset during prior negotiations while also making demands: “If they want me they gotta send me something… like 2 Ferraris“.

Tank Davis and Turki Alalsikh trade blows

Now, the back-and-forth isn’t letting up. First, Alalshikh addressed Davis’ comments about the Ferraris.

Gervonta Davis

“I heard (what) Davis said… I say to him: we will send you two gloves if you want, that’s it.”

Alalshikh didn’t seem to love the comments, and is clearly trying to play hardball.

Meanwhile, Davis took the time to respond once again, making it known that his comment wasn’t meant to be taken seriously; while also making it clear he doesn’t need the handouts.

Davis has never been one to back down from anything (although he deleted the tweet), particularly negotiations. He knows his worth and is going to fight only where he wants to.

That could take him out of the running for the Saudis, especially if they continue to poke the bear.

Leonard Ellerbe doesn’t give Frank Martin much of a shot against Gervonta Davis.

‘Tank’ hasn’t been in the ring since a massive knockout win over Ryan Garcia last April. The victory in Las Vegas seemingly cemented Davis as one of the biggest stars in the sport. Mike Tyson even labeled him the “face of boxing” post-fight.

However, due to legal reasons, as well as just disinterest in facing other potential contenders, Davis has been on the sidelines. According to recent reports, however, his hiatus is expected to end shortly. The WBA (Super) lightweight champion is expected to fight in the UK this summer.

Gervonta Davis

One name linked to Davis’ next fight is Frank Martin. ‘The Ghost’ has been dominant in his boxing career thus far, compiling an 18-0 record. However, a fight with Davis would be by far the biggest challenge to date.

It’s a challenge that Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe doesn’t think Martin can pass. Speaking in a recent interview with FightHype, the promoter was asked about talks between the two men.

There, Ellerbe declined to confirm if that fight was next. However, he did add that if it is, Davis won’t struggle. In the interview, Ellerbe stated

His Excellency Turki Alalshikh has turned down Gervonta Davis’ stipulations to fight in Saudi Arabia.

Over the past year, Alalshikh and Saudi Arabian officials have made a significant impact on professional boxing. Using their straightforward negotiation tactics and endless money, His Excellency has booked several high-profile boxing matches, including Tyson Fury vs. Francis Ngannou, Tyson Fury vs. Oleksandr Usyk, and Anthony Joshua vs. Francis Ngannou.

With Saudi Arabia becoming the new home of world-class boxing, there have been requests from fans and analysts about American superstar Davis potentially fighting in the Middle East. Davis responded by telling Alalshikh he wanted two Ferraris before negotiating.

During an interview on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, Alalshikh responded to Davis’ request by saying this, which was transcribed by Michael Benson:

Gervonta Davis isn’t exactly impressed by the prospect of fighting in the Middle East.

The southpaw star from Baltimore, Maryland, made it clear in a series of posts on his social media that he would require a bevy of expensive gifts—to say nothing of the actual payday—before he even considers fighting in Saudi Arabia.

The oil-producing country has emerged in recent months as a highly aggressive financial backer of high-profile fights. Since October, the capital of Saudi Arabia, Riyadh, has hosted head-turning matchups, starting with the “crossover” fight between WBC heavyweight titlist Tyson Fury and former UFC champion Francis Ngannou in October. That was followed by a card featuring former heavyweight champions Deontay Wilder and Anthony Joshua in separate fights. And next month, the country will stage the undisputed heavyweight championship fight between Fury and unified champion Oleksandr Usyk. There seems to be little sign of slowing down, as Joshua will be taking on Ngannou in Marchin Riyadh.

In a recent interview, the point person behind these fights, Turki Alalshikh, the chairman of the General Entertainment Authority, which oversees the cultural and entertainment offerings of Saudi Arabia, offered an invitation to Davis to fight in the country later this year.

Gervonta Davis

“I want him (Davis) and I send message now from you to [Davis’ advisor Al] Haymon: ‘Let’s do job [together], brother,’” Alalshikh said, adding, “Davis of course we want him in our country.”

The 29-year-old Davis (29-0, 27 KOs) offered a few pointed responses on his X account this past weekend.

“They made me mad, if they want me they gotta send me something to my front door..like 2 Ferraris or [something]!” Davis wrote.

“Like before I even think about going over there,” Davis added.

When a user accused Davis of being “scared” to fight in Saudi Arabia, Davis responded, “Nope, I’m the one with the power [smirk emoji].”

Davis, arguably the biggest American-born draw in boxing, is likely to stay rooted on home soil for the foreseeable future. His longtime backer, Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champion, inked a new content agreement with Amazon Prime Video after Showtime announced late last year that its parent company, Paramount Global, was shutting down its entire sports department. The first PBC-Amazon fight is expected to take place in March.
