Gervonta Davis

After ‘Tank’ defeated Martin, both fighters seemed to be willing to fight, but negotiations are now on hold. Here’s the reason why.

Gervonta Davis wants to keep making history in boxing and face the best boxers before he decides to hang up the gloves.

After beating Frank Martin convincingly, he stated he wanted to take on bigger challenges and names. He believes he has the qualities to keep his undefeated record going and beat the top fighters. Asked about potential opponents in the post-fight press conferences, he mentioned a few boxers, including Decin Haney, Shakur Stevenson, and Vasiliy Lomachenko.

Although it has been reported that Stevenson could be Davis’ next rival, the truth is that the Baltimore native has only been in negotiations to face the two-time Olympic gold medalist Lomachenko. Even the prestigious promoter Bob Arum admitted that it was the fight to make and it would be a reality after some negotiations.

The Davis vs Lomacheno fight in jeopardy, but why?

However, it seems things aren’t as smooth as Arum predicted. As of now, the negotiations are on hold and it’s unclear if both men will get to an agreement.

But what’s the reason for that? The Ukrainian’s manager, Egis Klimas, revealed that the IBF champion isn’t motivated to fight WBA champion Tank Davis right now.

Loma last recorded an 11-round knockout win over former unified lightweight champion George Kambosos Jr. on May 12 in Australia, but he seems to have lost the motivation to keep fighting, even if it’s a super fight against one of the best boxers.

Klimas said on X that his fighter is “not in the mood right now. He doesn’t have the motivation at that moment.”

“With Loma, just money is not what motivates him. He doesn’t take anything just because of money. You can offer him millions, tens of millions of dollars. If he doesn’t have motivation, he’s not ready to prepare for the fight”, he added.

With the current situation, Lomachenko may decide to take a break from boxing due to the ongoing war in his homeland, Ukraine, before returning to the ring. However, rumors regarding the fight between both men and their negotiations may arise and many could think Vasiliy is ducking Davis.

Gervonta Davis could head to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris as a representative of Team USA, although he will not be pulling the gloves on and stepping into the ring to compete for a gold medal in France.

The WBA lightweight champion of the world, who knocked out Ryan Garcia in April 2023, would link up with the United States’ cohort as an advisor with the aim of coaching them to Olympic glory in boxing

Given his status amongst the world’s best boxers,” Matt Johnson, of USA Boxing, wrote in a letter to a Baltimore Judge. “Mr. Davis would be a key asset in motivating and supporting our team to achieve Olympic greatness and become the number one nation in the world at this year’s Olympic Games.”

And the judge signed off on the request, permitting him to be in France from July 19-August 12, which had to be made due to conditions imposed on Davis for his role in a hit-and-run from 2020 within Baltimore.

Davis will be a useful asset to the team although he will quickly need to adjust to the differences from the professional and amateur scene, the Olympics being considered part of the latter. In the Games, fighters will compete for three rounds making the odds of a KO slim which is very different to the 12 rounds ‘Tank’ Davis is used to.

All the same, the wealth of experience from his 30 professional fights, the most recent of them on June 15, 2024, could be valuable and Davis is considered to be one of the best in the business pound-for-pound too.

“Some that can punch, can’t box. He can box, he can punch,” Roy Jones Jr said of Davis to All The Smoke Fight. “He can move laterally, he can do it left side, right side.

“He’s the most deadly kind of guy in the world besides a Mike Tyson type guy in boxing.”

Who will Team USA send to the Olympics?

The United States of America has a very high reputation to maintain in the world of boxing when one thinks of fighters such as Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, George Foreman and Mike Tyson so they will be keen to get their hands on the Olympic gold medals again.

Although they’re throwing a curveball by sending a team of exclusive rookies to the events in France, like they did for the 2020 Tokyo Games, when they won three silvers in their best haul since 2004.

Here are the names of the four fighters Team USA will send to the men’s boxing championships in Paris this summer: Roscoe Hill, flyweight; Jahmal Harvey, featherweight; Omari Jones, welterweight; Joshua Edwards, super-heavyweight.

Roy Jones Jr is regarded by many as one of the best to ever lace up the gloves, so is well qualified to judge the top fighters in the game today.

Arguably the most talent-stacked divisions in boxing are lightweight and super-lightweight, with the likes of Gervonta Davis, Shakur Stevenson, Vasiliy Lomachenko, Devin Haney and Teofimo Lopez all plying their trade there.

A potential lightweight unification fight which intrigues fans and offers a fascinating clash of styles is ‘Tank’ Davis versus Stevenson.

Most pundits are split as to who would come out on top – the precision punching power of Tank or the defensive skills of Stevenson.

Speaking to All The Smoke Fight, Jones was full of praise for both men, starting with Shakur,

The former four-weight world champion believes ‘Tank’ is one of the deadliest fighters in the sport.

Asked if Shakur was the best lightweight in the world, Jones didn’t hesitate to shut it down.

Instead he believes the Baltimore native is the best of the bunch.

It looks unlikely the two will collide next, with Davis and IBF champion Lomachenko in talks to face each other later this year.

Game recognizes game! Once considered the best boxer in the world, Roy Jones Jr. has solidified Gervonta Davis as the Crème de la crème of boxing right now—besides Mike Tyson, of course. The Baltimore native is coming off a spectacular eight round knockout victory over Frank Martin earlier this year. And guess what? Bigger fights are on the horizon!

The 29-year-old unbeaten WBA lightweight champion is in talks with Ukrainian boxing legend Vasyl Lomachenko for a fight later this year, which could propel him to the absolute top of the food chain. In the meantime, ‘Captain Hook’ appeared in an interview with former NBA player Stephen Jackson, where, you guessed it, Gervonta Davis was the topic.

Gervonta Davis, a Chess player? Roy Jones Jr. explains

There are no conversations in this world about the best in boxing without Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis, and that’s why Jackson brought him up during his chat with Jones Jr. Immediately, ‘Captain Hook’ exploded with excitement to say, “One of the best ones out there… he’s really [one of the] pound the best ones of the coup”.

Jones expanded that ‘Tank’ is not just a great puncher, he is also one of the best boxers. “Some that can punch, can’t box. He can box, he can punch, he can move laterally, he can do it left side, right side”, said the former champion. In a nutshell, Jones felt Davis can do whatever it takes to get the dub, which many others can’t.

When Jackson highlighted how Davis’ ability to set up punches has improved drastically, Jones had the same enthusiasm in his voice, as he said, “Of course, I agree with that! Because he shows discipline… He got enough shock on his punch but he knows how to set the punch up before he does it”. Jones praised the amount of patience Davis shows while setting up his bone crushing punches and the timing he delivers it with.

This led him to proclaim, “That’s the most deadly kind of guy in the world besides a Mike Tyson type guy in boxing”. He even added that Davis is no less than an expert “chess player” while in the ring, which makes him a “killer”. But the question is, will this killer instinct help Davis beat Lomachenko? Golden Boy Promotions head makes an empathetic prediction!

Oscar De La Hoya feels the age gap will play a key role

There’s no doubt Vasyl Lomachenko is an absolute unit! The guy has titles in three weight divisions, and he can fight in both southpaw and orthodox. It will be a tough challenge for Davis to overcome, but their age gap can not be overlooked. While Davis is 29, Lomachenko is staring down the retirement barrel at 36.

Oscar De La Hoya feels the same way, who said in an interview with ES News a few days ago, “I think it’ll be a good fight, but I do think that Tank with the youth and with Loma kind of losing a step, and I don’t say that with any disrespect it just happens, it just does, father time catches up to you”. So, Oscar felt their potential fight would be the perfect time for “Tank to dethrone Lomachenko”.

Gervonta Davis has four back-to-back knockouts wins over elite level boxers, of course, Roy Jones Jr. would have high regards for the Baltimore puncher. But what happens when he eventually fights Shakur Stevenson? Will Stevenson’s defense prove too much for ‘Tank’? Or will he bulldozer through it?

According to head of Top Rank promotions, Bob Arum, his man Vasiliy Lomachenko is in negotiations to face Gervonta Davis next.

Lomachenko is a three-weight world champion and currently holds the IBF lightweight title after rolling back the years with a vintage performance against former champion George Kambosos Jr.

The Ukrainian became the first man to stop Kambosos after the towel was thrown in by the corner in the eleventh round after a series of punishing body shots.

‘Tank’ returned to the ring last month for the first time since stopping Ryan Garcia over a year ago to face previously unbeaten American Frank Martin.

WBA Champion Davis did what he seems to always do by conceding the early rounds but applying increasing pressure to his opponent, putting them under physical and mental strain.

The Baltimore native finished his man in the eighth round when he landed an uppercut followed by a devastating straight left.

Before the fight Tank made it clear that Loma was on his hit list and now talks have started for a fight towards the end of the year,

Speaking to ES NEWS about the possible unification matchup, legendary former fighter turned promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, thinks the time is perfect for Davis to ‘dethrone’ Lomachenko.

Another man chasing a fight with Tank is WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson who is coming off another dominant, if underwhelming, points victory over Artem Harutyunyan.

Ukrainian lightweight Vasyl Lomachenko was once at the very top of the world and looking indestructible, just like Gervonta Davis feels today. At a certain point during that great moment for ‘Loma’, even people like Joe Rogan were talking about him for his skills. Right now, it doesn’t feel like anybody can defeat Gervonta Davis, which is one of the main reasons promoters want this fight to happen in the first place. If anybody has the skillset to potentially defeat ‘Tank‘, that man is Vasyl Lomachenko. Because if Loma finds his best form again by November, we could be in for one of the best fights of 2024. There is no question about that and everybody who loves boxing would watch it.

Bob Arum confirms Gervonta vs Lomachenko?

During a recent interview with Fights ATW, legendary promoter Bob Arum revealed he has been talking to Lomachenko’s manager, Egis Klimas. It was a meeting at a restaurant in Beverley Hills. That’s exactly where Arum dropped the bomb, one of the fights every boxing fan would want to see. This is what he told Fights ATW during the interview” “We discussed Loma. Loma is coming here (this week), and we will sit down, and he will tell us what he wants. My feeling is, reading Egis, that it’s a Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis fight. It’s a Vegas fight, MGM or T-Mobile. We’d decide a date where there are openings.”

So, November 2024 in Las Vegas. That is the potential date but Arum did mention that this was the first time they talked about it. We will likely have a few months worth of negotiations before we get a final date and a venue. As far as where this fight might take place, the two options are the MGM Grand or the T-Mobile Arena. If this is announced over the next few weeks, we can already start speculating and wait for the show these two will put on during the press conferences leading up to the event. We are ready for another great fight to close out the year.

Gervonta Davis versus Shakur Stevenson is one of the most sought-after fights in the sport.

The all-American clash would see two world titles and two undefeated records on the line, pitting Stevenson’s elite defence and movement against ‘Tank’s calculated stalking and devastating power.

Both men benefitted from Devin Haney relinquishing his lightweight titles, as Stevenson picked up the vacant WBC belt with a win over Edwin De Los Santos and Davis was elevated to WBA Champion, staging a knockout first defence against Frank Martin recently.

The pair have assured fans they will meet in the ring, and two-time welterweight world champion Shawn Porter looked ahead to that day on his podcast.

Like many in-demand fights in boxing, fans will have to wait for it to marinate a while longer as Davis enters talks with IBF Champion Vasiliy Lomachenko.

In the meantime, Stevenson has said he is open to facing number one contender William Zepeda.

Gervonta Davis was mentored by Floyd Mayweather early in his career. Now, their relationship consists of social media digs.

The 29-year-old from Baltimore is flying high after yet another knockout win, this time over previously undefeated Frank Martin, to retain his WBA Lightweight World Title.

At 30-0 with 28 stoppages, many believe ‘Tank’ is unbeatable in his current division. His team certainly do, and they have in the past said it’s only a matter of time until he beats all-comers.

It appears that, to find a suitable challenge, they’re even looking to past eras. On Instagram, ‘Tank’s co-trainer Kenny Ellis floated the idea of a fight against Mayweather, calling on the 50-0 retired fighter to ‘stop spinning the fans.’

His reference is to George Foreman‘s success as the oldest ever heavyweight world champion, winning the belts at 45. Should Mayweather, 47, ever consider a return for a belt – although it wouldn’t be the one Davis holds as he wouldn’t make 135 – he could break even Bernard Hopkins‘ record of the oldest world champion ever at 46.

In a recent interview, ‘Tank’ said that multi-weight champion Mayweather would give him a tougher fight than any current contender – a rare compliment these days considering the pair’s relationship has turned increasingly sour.

Whilst the post from Ellis may create some debate about what might happen in a fantasy fight, Davis remains focused on making a lightweight unification against Vasiliy Lomachenko.

Meanwhile, Mayweather will indeed stick to the exhibition circuit and his recently announced ‘rematch’ with John Gotti III, the first of which ended in a brawl.

There are a few reasons why Gervonta Davis is one of the biggest draws in boxing, and why Shakur Stevenson doesn’t come anywhere close when it comes to selling out arenas and fighting against big name opponents.

The biggest reason is their contrasting styles. Davis likes to knock people out. Stevenson likes winning fights by avoiding punches, which has made many boxing fans label him as “boring“; so much so that he got booed by the crowd in his hometown last weekend.

Is Tank Davis a one-trick pony?

Stevenson addressed what makes him different than Davis and other boxers in a recent interview with Cigar Talk.

There’s no denying what Stevenson is saying, but it’s why many boxing fans don’t like watching him. He’s a very technical fighter, but sometimes people just want to see hands being thrown.

Stevenson most recently defeated Artem Harutyunyan by unanimous decision, marking the first successful defense of his WBC lightweight title, which he won against Edwin De Los Santos in November of last year. A fight against Davis has been rumored, but it’s far from being a done deal.

They can sometimes go under the radar, but the people who train the best boxers are pretty brave as well and Gervonta Davis‘ trainer has gone after Floyd Mayweather.

As Mayweather once declared: “I’m the best, nobody can beat me.” Davis‘ trainer is planning to put that statement to the test.

Mayweather retired from professional boxing with a record of 50-0, with huge names like Manny Pacquiao and Canelo Alvarez failing to beat him when the chance came around.

He has never even been knocked down by an opponent’s punch, so you’d have to be brave or stupid to take him on.

The trainer’s statement

Taking to Instagram, Gervonta Davis‘ trainer wrote, “Gervonta Davis can decode the shoulder roll if Floyd can fight another exhibition. He can fight another fight if he is great as he says he is. Let’s stop spinning the fans, Gervonta vs Floyd.”

Davis was actually a part of Mayweather Productions in the past when he was trying to make his name, but since departing in 2022, he has been at loggerheads with Mayweather and a fight has been on the cards.

Mayweather had big hopes for Davis when they started working together.

“Uh, no I asked [was] what [Floyd] for the whole summer before I signed with him you know before I even you know signed anything on paper he already bought me cars, he bought me jewelry, and things like that,” Gervonta once said in an interview.
