Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis

Shakur Stevenson is setting the stage for what could be the most significant fight in boxing by challenging Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis.

As he seeks to elevate his profile for a shot at the lightweight world champion of the WBA, Stevenson has openly promised Davis a “rude awakening” should the opportunity arise for them to face each other.

He anticipates that their match, a classic showdown between a slugger and a boxer – both undefeated – would become a landmark event in the sport.

However, Davis, who has not fought in over a year and is expected to face Frank Martin later this year, dismisses the potential challenge from Stevenson as an easy fight due to Stevenson‘s perceived technical limitations.

In an interview on Naji’s podcast, Cigar Talks, Davis mocked Stevenson‘s abilities when asked if the 26-year-old challenger would be his toughest opponent to date:

“Hell no. Show me something he has done. Show me. His power isn’t scandalous. What defense? He’s just lacking,” Stevenson said.

Stevenson Confident Despite Criticism

These remarks did not sit well with Stevenson, who took to his X account (formerly Twitter) to respond to the criticisms, asserting that it would be “a rude awakening when fight night comes.”

While such exchanges have been common between them for months, experts believe these provocations might finally lead to a face-off, giving Stevenson a chance to prove whether his zeal is sufficient to challenge one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world.

Regarding the potential fight, Todd duBoef, President of Top Rank, indicated that it’s only a matter of time before it happens as their careers are on a “collision course.” He stated: “I hope so. I think it makes sense.”

In addition, Bob Arum expressed confidence in Stevenson‘s capabilities to defeat Davis, but emphasized that the decision ultimately rests with ‘Tank’ himself.

In a conversation on the podcast Million Dollaz Worth of Game, Stevenson acknowledged Davis‘s stature as the PPV star, noting the financial dynamics at play.”

Who am I to make an offer to the biggest star in boxing? What can I offer him? It doesn’t make sense. It would have to come from his side, from his team, to want to make a fight,” Stevenson said.

As anticipation builds, the boxing community is keen to see if this verbal sparring will translate into an actual match-up, potentially setting up one of the most intriguing fights in recent boxing history.

Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis claims he is financially better off than Floyd Mayweather Jr. was at the same age after signing a 6-7 fight deal.

WBA ‘regular’ lightweight champion Tank Davis (29-0, 27 KOs) says the contract he signed with PBC – which includes a fight against Shakur Stevenson – is more lucrative than the six-fight deal Mayweather signed with Showtime in 2013.

Davis hasn’t disclosed exactly how much he stands to earn, but it estimated to be worth $250million.

According to reports at the time, Mayweather‘s 2013 deal was worth $200m, which he had when he was 29. But Davis claims he has eclipsed the retired boxing icon.

“I’m at the point where I passed him and I’m doing it at a young age. When Floyd Mayweather was 29 [he wasn’t doing it like me], you’ll see,” said Gervonta Davis to Cigar Talk.

“That [6-7 fight] deal that I was talking about, that’s bigger than his [Mayweather’s] deal, and I’m just releasing it on here.”

The difference between the two is that Mayweather wasn’t earning such amounts at that age, as the sport has evolved financially for lower-ranked boxers.

Will Gervonta Davis have a better legacy than Floyd Mayweather?

When Mayweather was 29, he was fighting the likes of Emanuel Augustus and Gregorio Vargas and refused to duck any opponent that he was faced against. Davis, meanwhile, has faced claims that he has cherry-picked opponents he has a better chance of beating.

It doesn’t look like Tank Davis‘ career will be anywhere close to Mayweather‘s in terms of legacy after choosing not to fight the likes of Vasily Lomachenko and Devin Haney in his 11-year professional career.

That is where the two fighters differ, as Mayweather was keen to take on the top opponents such as Manny Pacquiao and Ricky Hatton. As a result, his paychecks would be bigger than Tank‘s.

It’s fair to say Mayweather also had the ability to drawn in huge TV audiences for his fights, which resulted in the undefeated champion taking a bigger slice of the pie.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. is being held in Dubai over money issues, according to ‘Money’s former protégé, Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis. ‘Tank’, who fought for Mayweather-owned boxing promotion for most of his career, parted ways in 2022 after accusing the promotion of ‘mismanaging’ his career. The two men have been feuding ever since, taking shots at each other and even making threats of physical violence.

And the latest chapter of their ongoing beef saw verbose UFC legend Chael Sonnen offer his help in ‘rescuing’ Floyd Mayweather.

Chael Sonnen offers his services to ‘free’ Floyd Mayweather

Gervonta Davis left the Mayweather Promotions two years ago and has been managing his career since. While the beef between them seemed to have died down, a recent video by Mayweather Jr. reignited it. Without naming anyone, the undefeated fighter took shots at an unnamed group of fighters, presenting himself as the point of reference to these fighters whom he accused of not working hard enough, as he did as a young man, and concentrating more on their appearances.

‘Tank’ took this as a shot at himself and came out with a fiery response. The boxer posted his former mentor’s rant on his Instagram and gave his thoughts on the topic, claiming that the GOAT contender was being held against his will in Dubai for not fulfilling his obligations despite getting paid for it.

However, the attacks didn’t stop there as the WBA lightweight champion took to Twitter and reiterated his attack. “They got Floyd ass for real..tell him I’ll send him a wire..LET MY FUCKING FAMILY GO 🗣️,” he tweeted. And verbose UFC commentator and Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s critic, Chael Sonnen, jumped in to ask, tongue in cheek, “How can I help?”

This response, of course, is perfectly in line with Sonnen’s sardonic style of commentary and fans should not expect ‘Uncle Chael’ to mount a Mission Impossible-style rescue mission to free Floyd from his alleged captivity. It should be noted that while Davis has claimed repeatedly that Mayweather is not being allowed to leave Dubai freely, there is no evidence for it except for his and rapper 50 Cent’s claims.

While ‘Tank’ may have scored a ‘W’ on Mayweather, one of his older wins is coming under question recently after Ryan Garcia‘s wildly entertaining bout against Devin Haney.

Fans want to see ‘Tank’ fight Ryan Garcia again

Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis fought superstar boxer Ryan Garcia in April last year in a catchweight title bout. And while Davis managed to win after Garcia quit following a bad liver shot in the seventh round, questions are being raised around ‘Tank’s win after Garcia’s recent domination over Devin Haney earlier this month.

For their boxing match, Davis had stipulated that Garcia make 136 lbs and had a clause that prevented Garcia from rehydrating more than 10 lbs. This decision has come under criticism from many analysts and fans. After Garcia dominated Haney, many feel that the rehydration clause was the reason ‘King’ fell so meekly to Davis. Going into a fight severely dehydrated (which is mostly what weight cutting involves), does severely affect a fighter’s abilities and chin.

Many feel that Davis’s victory over Garcia is not legitimate since the now 25-year-old was not fighting at his best and that the result might be quite different if Garcia fights ‘Tank’ without the rehydration clause. But, the WBA champion is yet to respond to these calls, despite him sparing no opportunity to diss his opponents and critics, as he has been doing to Mayweather and featherweight champion Shakur Stevenson recently.

Gervonta Davis has had enough of Mayweather.

Gervonta “Tank” Davis and Floyd Mayweather seem to have some new beef between them. In the past, Davis was a sort of protege to Mayweather, with the two having a mentor-mentee relationship. Their relationship started to fracture after Tank started winning titles back in 2017. In 2022, Davis left Mayweather’s fight promotion company, striking out on his own. During Tank’s training for his fight against Ryan Garcia, he alleged that Mayweather kicked him out of his gym. he asserted that Mayweather attempted to keep him from training for the fight effectively. Now Tank has responded to a recent Mayweather video, officially calling the boxing legend out.

This morning, Tank responded to Mayweather with some pointed words. Floyd Mayweather is no stranger to beef. This week, he had a heated argument with Devin Haney’s father. Mayweather came under fire from Haney’s camp after he called and congratulated Ryan Garcia on his win over Devin Haney. Haney’s dad called him out for a lack of loyalty. Gervonta Davis has now called out Floyd and has alleged similar instances of disloyalty that he has shown over the years.

Bill Haney – Devin Haney’s father, trainer and manager – is predicting that his son will overtake Gervonta “Tank” Davis to become the unofficial “face of boxing” after, he says, Devin beats Ryan Garcia on Saturday.

Davis and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez have consistently been the top two draws in the United States over the past few years, and they have jockeyed for position to claim boxing’s top billing – at least on U.S. soil.

Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) is attempting to further catapult his career and star power by besting Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs) in order to join the conversation.

“Gervonta Davis might be over with after this fight,” Bill Haney told BoxingScene.

“After we dismantle and beat up a healthy Ryan Garcia at 140 pounds and do some numbers, it might be over with for the former face of boxing, Tank Davis, who says that he can’t get the fight. How are you going to be the face of boxing and you can’t get the fight that you want? Devin has crossed platforms. We dealt with Stephen Espinoza at Showtime. We dealt with Eddie Hearn with Matchroom and DAZN. We dealt with Bob Arum and Top Rank and ESPN, and now we’re with Oscar De La Hoya and Golden Boy and DAZN.

“We did what it takes to make the [Garcia] fight happen. We broke down the myth that there were sides of the street. We do it for the people. The people put the target on their backs, and we delivered the fights.”

Haney-Garcia will be held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Davis has a strong track record at the venue, and Haney-Garcia will ultimately be compared to the big business Davis did there in his May 2022 knockout win over Rolando “Rolly” Romero. Additionally, David helped drive 1.2 million PPV buys and $22.8 million in ticket revenue for his own fight with Garcia last year.

“The [PPV numbers for Haney-Garcia] don’t have to be close to [Davis-Garcia],” said Bill Haney. “They have to beat the current numbers in 2024. We know the world of the fire sticks happen. We can’t judge the past. Let’s talk about and beat the 2024 numbers. If we beat any number in 2024, then that says Devin is the face of 2024. We don’t go on 2023.”

According to Davis promoter TGB, Davis-Romero was a sold-out show that broke the all-time gate record for a boxing match at the Barclays Center. The announced attendance of 18,970 also set a new record for boxing in the venue.

Haney-Garcia, meanwhile, has seen a lack of demand lead to price drops in tickets in recent weeks.

“Clearly whomever scaled their fight didn’t know what tf they were doing and it will ultimately cost the fighters a bunch of money,” Leonard Ellerbe, Davis’ promoter, recently posted to his X social media account – a reference to the light business Haney-Garcia has done thus far.

Haney agreed to a 55-45 revenue split in favor of Garcia for the gate, sponsorships and PPV percentages.

The heavily favored Haney is expected to beat the enigmatic Garcia and defend his junior welterweight title.

With Garcia as his dance partner, Haney should also improve on the subpar PPV figures from his fights against Vasiliy Lomachenko and Regis Prograis in 2023.

Whether or not the former undisputed lightweight champion Haney can lure Davis in for a dance after Garcia remains to be seen.

Although Davis has fought once before at 140 pounds, in 2021 against Mario Barrios, Tank insists he’s a 135-pound fighter.

“I don’t know [what’s going to stop a Haney-Davis fight from happening] because it wasn’t the money,” Bill Haney said. “I said there was $20 million on the table, [chairman of the Saudi Arabian General Entertainment Authority] Turki Alalshikh said there was even more. He said, ‘Let’s talk about it.’ I think Tank said something about some Ferraris. His Excellency sent over some boxing gloves, and I haven’t heard anything from there.

There could be a huge fight later this year.

Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz’s manager has named Gervonta “Tank” Davis as a potential opponent for his fighter in December.

Pitbull became the WBA super lightweight champion when he defeated Rolly Romero last month, and has already been looking ahead to his next match-up, according to his manager, Sean Gibbons.

Gibbons reflected on his fighter’s burgeoning reputation after his recent success.

“Down here, it’s not Beatlemania – it’s Pitbullmania,” Gibbons said, reported BoxingScene.

“People are writing songs for him, creating murals for him. It’s something.”

Gibbons believes that Cruz will be looking at a quick turnaround for his first title defence, with August a potential date.

Manny Pacquiao, Cruz’s promoter, is also looking for the fighter to stay active.

“Manny wants activity, to keep his momentum going,” Gibbons added.

Pacquiao is also keen for a December clash between Davis and Cruz, giving the latter a chance to avenge the defeat from their first meeting.

“December is perfect,” Gibbons continued.

“We’re not chasing Tank now that we have the belt, but everywhere we go, everyone wants to know when we’re fighting Gervonta Davis. He’ll fight. Then Pitbull will fight. And we’ll be ready.

“He’s ready to fight, and the fans are ready to see him again. The fans have spoken.”

Gervonta “Tank” Davis has been out of the ring for almost a year now. Following his dominant win over Ryan Garcia last April, boxing fans have been left wondering what Davis’ next move would be.

From Teofimo Lopez to Devin Haney to even Conor Benn, plenty of potential opponents have been floated around. Yet none have materialized and no one knows when his next fight would even come. But on Wednesday, Davis dropped several hints in an Instagram post.

Gervonta Davis vs Ryan Garcia rematch in June?

First and foremost, Davis posted a photo from his fight with Garcia. That leads many to believe a rematch could be in the works.

But the timeline doesn’t really add up. Garcia fights Haney on April 20, which would give him at most a little over two months to recover and prepare for Davis. It seems too tight of a turnaround.

Whether the opponent is Garcia or not, June appears to be the set month for Davis’ next fight. And the location will be Houston, if the geolocation on Davis’ Instagram post is to be believed.

Davis has fought in Texas once before, in San Antonio in October of 2020 when he defeated Leo Santa Cruz. But he hasn’t fought in Houston yet. Garcia actually has, with his last fight, against Oscar Duarte, being held at the Toyota Center.

Following a big victory, boxing fans generally have to wait a while in order to find out who their favorite fighter’s next opponent will be. Devin Haney is only nine days removed from stripping Regis Prograis of the WBC super lightweight title, yet a superstar can start being circled as his next possible opponent.

It’s not by Haney’s own doing, though. Bill Haney, the vocal and outspoken father of Devin, has recently called out Gervonta “Tank” Davis for “hiding” from Devin by lowballing him with offers and a rehydration clause.

Tank Davis responds to Bill and Devin Haney

Davis has not taken kindly to Bill’s words, and Tank has now responded in a short yet brutal manner.

“I promise you. Your father gonna cry for what I’m a do to you.”

Davis ended up deleting the tweet, but Devin responded by saying “let’s make it happen” and Davis followed up with “say nothin..“.

It’s tough to get a gauge on if Davis is truly serious about the fight, but it would be a risky proposition. Davis doesn’t really have anything to fear given how his career has played out, but Haney is 31-0 and at the top of his game. Davis hasn’t faced a boxer as technically sound, especially defensively, as Haney yet.

Haney recently moved up a weight class. Davis hasn’t fought at super lightweight since 2021, when he won the WBA title but then vacated to go back to lightweight. It will be interesting to see what weight the two would agree on if the fight ever materializes.

Devin Haney is living a sweet moment after his win over Regis Prograis and now there are several possibilities for “The Dream.” The first is to defend the super lightweight title against the number one WBC challenger Sandor Martin, as long as he wins his fight this Saturday; the second is to unify with Rolly RomeroTeofimo Lopez or Subriel Matias; the third is to move up a category, an option that he has already hinted at.

The truth is that because of his status, he is in a privileged position to choose. But the reality is that Haney must remain in the 140-pound category (63.5 kg) despite the sacrifice that may entail. He was able to gain 25 pounds (11.33 kg) in the rehydration period against Prograis.

One thing that Haney is particularly proud of is his meticulous approach to nutrition with the SNAC (Scientific Nutrition for Advanced Conditioning) system, whose founder and CEO Victor Conte was in the shadows for a few months due to the BALCO scandal, a laboratory similar to SNAC. Because of his weight-gaining abilities and work with SNAC, “The Dream” wanted to respond to critics who say he has an advantage.

“I’ve been doing the same thing for years, just killing myself to make weight after the weigh-in….. The world said I had pads on my fists and I was this and that! Now, once I go up, they pull out every excuse in the book,” said Haney. “I didn’t beat Regis by bullying him with my weight, I beat him because of my skills.”

Devin Haney challenges Tank Davis

Haney also called out Gervonta “Tank” Davis, who would have to move up to super lightweight to make a fight between them happen.

“Tank is a p—y…. He always says I want to fight when I already have a fight scheduled. Well now I’m free! Let’s make it happen,” Haney said.

Would Davis want to enter this fight knowing that such a dangerous opponent is capable of moving up 25 pounds before the fight? The answer is no.

Ever since defeating Errol Spence Jr. in dominant fashion a couple of weeks ago, Terence “Bud” Crawford has called out just about every top fighter within 20 or so pounds of his weight class.

He has floated the possibility of fighting Canelo Alvarez at a catchweight. He even jawed with Jermell Charlo during the Spence fight. Now, it appears he has Gervonta “Tank” Davis squarely in his sights.

Speaking on the Earn Your Leisure podcast, Crawford responded to a comment calling Davis a “champion”.

Crawford is technically right: Devin Haney has all of the lightweight titles at this moment in time.

Finding the right weight

In order to set up a fight between Crawford and Davis, “Tank” would have to move up substantially in weight. Crawford has already mentioned he would only stay at 147 pounds for a fight with Davis

That means Davis would need to gain and train with 12 pounds of extra weight. Davis’ heaviest weight in a fight has been 140, but he only did that once. It would be a big ask from Davis, one he most likely wouldn’t be willing to accept.

Crawford has fought at 147 for the past six years and seems unwilling to drop down again. But if the money is right, anything is possible
