Biles continues her journey toward a third Olympic Games. The seven-time Olympic medalist recently won the all-around title at the Core Hydration Classic.

Biles secured a record-extending ninth all-around national title at the US Gymnastics Championships on Sunday, showcasing her readiness for the upcoming Paris Olympics.

She finished with a combined score of 119.750, with Skye Blakely in second place and Kayla DiCello in third. Suni Lee and Jordan Chiles finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Baby Biles to be the second Simone Biles to join the sport since Adria Biles’ decision to quit

Adria Biles made the difficult decision to quit gymnastics in 2016 to pursue a career in hygiene and dental assisting.

Simone said, “Ten years ago, my very first world championships was in Antwrep so that was 2013, and last year in 2023, I made my sixth world team which was back in Antwrep and it was so crazy of everything that we recognized that was similar to 2013.” On that sixth occasion, Biles comfortably clinched a record-tying sixth-world all-around title. With 58.399 points in Antwerp, Belgium, surpassing last year’s champion, Rebeca Andrade of Brazil, by 1.633 points. Not stopping there, she delved into the nostalgia.

The US Justice Department announced on Tuesday that it has finalized a 138.7 million-dollar settlement to address 139 claims from victims of sexual abuse perpetrated by former USA Gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar.

In a statement, the Justice Department clarified that these settlements pertain to administrative claims against the United States due to the FBI’s inadequate investigation of Nassar‘s misconduct.

Larry Nassar, who served as the USA Gymnastics team physician for 18 years and also worked at the University of Michigan, committed sexual abuse over nearly two decades until his arrest in 2016, under the pretext of medical treatments.

The Justice Department’s Office of Inspector General released a report in July 2021 criticizing the FBI’s handling of the allegations against Nassar.

Acting Assistant Attorney General Benjamin C. Mizer condemned Nassar‘s actions.

“For decades, Lawrence Nassar abused his position, betraying the trust of those under his care and supervision, and evading accountability,” Mizer declared.

Mizer emphasized that the allegations should have been taken seriously from the outset.

“While these settlements cannot fully repair the harm caused by Nassar, our hope is that they will offer critical support to the victims as they continue on their path of healing.”

Biles was one of a number of victims who will receive payments

Notable victims of Nassar’s abuse include renowned athletes such as Simone Biles, McKayla Maroney, Aly Raisman, Gabby Douglas, Sabrina Vega, Ashton Locklear, Kyla Ross, and Alyssa Baumann.

In 2017, Nassar pleaded guilty to abusing 10 of the more than 265 athletes who reported abuse.

Michigan State University, where Nassar worked at a clinic, had previously agreed in 2018 to a 500-million-dollar settlement for women and girls who reported sexual abuse.

Furthermore, the USA Gymnastics federation and the US Olympic and Paralympic committees reached a 380-million-dollar settlement with Nassar’s victims in 2021.

Simone Biles, the most decorated gymnast in US history, has agreed to compete at the US Classic on May 18.

Along with the US Championships and the Olympic trials, the event is one of three major mileposts on the road to the 2024 Paris Games.

This year’s Classic will take place in Hartford on May 17-19.

Reigning Olympic all-around gymnastics champion Sunisa Lee had been the headliner of the initial draw prior to Biles’ enrolment.

Lee, who became the sixth American woman to win her sport’s most coveted title at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, is eyeing a run at this year’s Paris Games. The 21-year-old Lee has been hampered by health issues over the last two years but did compete at the Winter Cup in Louisville in February.

The initial field for the event slated for May 17-19 also includes 2020 Olympic floor champion Jade Carey, six-time world championship medalist Shilese Jones, former NCAA all-around champion Trinity Thomas and four-time world championship medalist Leanne Wong.

The meet is the next major event in the run-up to the U.S. Olympic Trials scheduled for late June in Minneapolis.

Biles was named the AP’s Female Athlete of the Year in 2023 after making a remarkable return to the sport following a disappointing showing at the Tokyo Games in 2021.

Her triumphant return that included her record eighth U.S. national championship and a sixth world all-around gold made Biles the sixth woman to claim the AP honor for a third time.

The last time Biles had saluted the judges, she was earning a bronze medal on the balance beam at the end of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the end of a tumultuous two weeks where her decision to pull out of multiple finals due to ‘ the twisties ‘ (think mid-air vertigo) dragged the sometimes uncomfortable conversation about athletes and their mental health into the white-hot spotlight only the Games provide.

Though she drew near-universal acclaim for her courage to put her safety first, a quick check of her mentions on social media showed not everyone agreed.

She took a two-year hiatus in the aftermath, going into what she called a ‘protective shell.’ She dove deeper into therapy while eyeing a return on her terms.

Still, that didn’t stop self-doubt from creeping in. Only this time, instead of letting the anxiety gnaw at her confidence, she accepted its presence, took a deep breath, and put on the kind of show that is hers and hers alone.

‘I did a lot better than I thought I would do,’ Biles said.

Besides them, 2020 Olympic medalists can attend the camp.
