Thanks to the new Netflix documentary about Simone Biles, called Simone Biles Rising, it seems we have finally pinpointed the first moment that Jonathan Owens realized exactly who his wife is. In one interview, he remembered his mind being blown the first time it hit him how famous Simone Biles was.

Jonathan Owens’ eye-opening moment

The documentary series sheds light on the mental health struggles Biles faced at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. In the clip, which she shared on her Instagram story, she describes the weight of pressure she felt to win, comparing it to Hercules holding up the world. It then cuts to the Chicago Bears safety, who re-lived his “aha” moment.

“I remember seeing the commercials leading up to it and it’s like ‘The Greatest of All Time, Simone Biles. The star of the Olympics!'” he remembers. “And I’m like, ‘man, it’s every other commercial!'”

The jaw-dropping look on his face told the story of a man who simply couldn’t understand that level of fame. Owens played college football at Missouri Western State before working his way to the fringes of NFL rosters with the Houston TexansGreen Bay Packers and now the Bears. Biles is a 4-time gold medalist and has been in the spotlight since she won her first World Championship at age 16.

Owens didn’t know who Simone Biles was at first

Owens infamously admitted he did not know who Simone Biles was when the first met in a viral interview in 2023. The NFL journeyman went so far as to say he was the “catch” in the relationship.

He is now more supportive and involved in Biles’ gymnastics career. The eye-opening clip from Biles’ Netflix show seems to mark the turning point when he realized how big of a deal she is and the unique challenges it provides for her career and their relationship.

We can expect Biles to be a major star again at the 2024 Paris Olympics, but this time, the people around her will be a little more prepared to help her shoulder the load.

Yurchenko double pike- the most difficult vault in women’s gymnastics, and for good reason. And in 2021, Simone Biles dared to be the first to attempt this skill in competition, although she couldn’t quite pull it off. The entire vault lasts only around six seconds, but in those fleeting moments, your fate hangs by a thread. It can either end your career or turn you into a legend which was very well documented in Simone Biles’s Netflix Rising series episode 2.

Anyone who has honed this airborne skill in sports can relate to the frightening sensation of suddenly being lost in the air experience known as the twisties. After Simone Biles withdrew from the team final in the Tokyo Olympics, she acknowledged that she was “having a little bit of the twisties.” This wasn’t her first encounter with the phenomenon; she revealed it started at the beginning of 2019, and she had also forgotten how to twist and flip. However, “Rising” season 2, shows her journey after Tokyo when she came back and how she felt.

In October 2023, in Antwerp, Belgium, Simone Biles gave the crowd exactly what it had been clamoring for. “I’ll not be broken,” she seemed to declare as she strode towards the vault in a striking blue glittery leotard. Commentators echoed the rarity of her choice: “the Yurchenko double pike,” noting, “no other woman is attempting this.” They emphasized the daunting difficulty of the maneuver, remarking, “this, I don’t know if anybody even thinks how difficult it is.” Saying at the moment, Biles confessed, “I was so nervous. it’s been two years since I’ve competed on an international stage. That arena setup just takes you back to Tokyo.”

As Simone Biles reminisces about her experience in Tokyo, recalling both her challenges with the Yurchenko double pike and her faults, she looks ahead to the present Artistic Gymnastics Championships (at that time) with a mixture of apprehension. She candidly admits her fears: “Most of the time, I’m afraid that if I miss my leg, I’ll probably land on my head. If you slip your hand, I mean, you could literally be paralyzed.” Despite these daunting thoughts, she prepares herself to show her strength, declaring, “everything happens so fast; anything could go wrong.” Finally, with focused intensity, Simone Biles races down the runway and she succeeds!!

In the fourth rotation, Simone Biles flawlessly executed the Yurchenko double-pike vault. She scored 15.266 for a total of 58.865 in the all-around competition. Biles faced a 0.5 penalty for coach Landi standing on the podium. Commentators lauded her performance as “unbelievable,” while Biles herself reflected, “Just land on your feet, salute, and you’re good. Like, it’s named after you; it’s done.” And Since then there has been no looking back! But fast-forward to today, has Simone Biles overcome the twisties?

Has Simone Biles bounced back from the twisties completely?

Simone Biles has made an unexpected and outstanding return from the twisties that troubled her during the Tokyo Games, securing a bronze medal in the balance beam. Looking ahead, as she has qualified for the Paris Olympics, she confidently declared, “I’m fine. I’m twisting again. No worries. All is good.” Her comeback journey ended in securing her third consecutive Olympic appearance at the US trials.

Critics who have been questioning her resolve after Tokyo, Biles bluntly remarked, “They’ll still say, ‘Oh my gosh, you’re going to quit again?’ And like, if I did, what are you going to do about it? Tweet me some more? I’ve already dealt with it for three years. They want to see us fail.” She expressed disappointment in those who eagerly await athletes’ downfalls, stressing the irreplaceable contributions athletes like her make to sports. Well, we all know a GOAT is a GOAT, and when it comes to mental health, taking care of yourself is as important as anything else. Biles showed that putting your health first is the key to lasting success, proving that it’s essential to look after number one no matter what else you prioritize.

Simone Biles, at 27 years-old, is set to make a remarkable return to the Summer Olympics, solidifying her place as one of the most accomplished athletes in U.S. gymnastics history. However, what lies ahead for Biles after the Paris Olympics remains uncertain.

In an article by Will Graves of The Associated Press, it was highlighted that Biles has been relatively quiet about her plans for the future of her gymnastics career, sparking speculations about a potential retirement. She hinted that this could potentially mark the end of her illustrious journey in the sport.

Biles expressed her frustration with critics who seem to anticipate the downfall of athletes, emphasizing the importance of acknowledging and appreciating their contributions while they are still active. She emphasized, “So you really have to give them their flowers in the sport because once they’re gone, you’re going to miss them.

Biles prepares for emotional farewell

As of now, Biles seems to be fully focused on her upcoming performances in Paris. She opened up about the mental health challenges she faced during the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, explaining that she feels the need to prove something to herself.

“I think with everything I’ve been through, I want to push the limits, I want to see how far I can go,” said Biles. “I want to see what I’m still capable of so once I step away from this sport, I can truly be happy with my career and say I gave it my all.”

Biles’ determination to test her boundaries and strive for personal fulfillment in her career highlights her unwavering commitment to the sport. Her resilience and perseverance in overcoming mental health struggles have been an inspiration to many, and her return to the Olympics serves as a testament to her strength and dedication.

As we eagerly anticipate Biles‘ performances in Paris, it’s evident that she continues to embody the spirit of a true champion. Her journey serves as a reminder of the impact and legacy she has created within the world of gymnastics. Whether this marks the conclusion of her competitive career or leads to new endeavors, Simone Biles’ influence and achievements will undoubtedly leave a lasting imprint on the sport.

“Whenever I first came back to gym, I had to start from the basics,” said Olympic champion Simone Biles

about her remarkable comeback after the Tokyo Olympics, where she couldn’t even perform a twist on the vaults. In the new Netflix series “Rising,” Biles opens up about her harrowing experiences with the USA Gymnastics Young Athlete Development Program (YDP). She candidly discusses the fears and challenges she faced, shedding light on crucial aspects that go beyond her stellar career.

“Simone Biles: Rising” is one of Netflix’s most anticipated documentaries. Released worldwide just days before the Summer Olympics commence in Paris, it is sure to generate significant hype around the athlete who will lead the USA women’s gymnastics team. Fans across the globe will be eagerly watching for another stunning Yurchenko Double Pike from Biles in Paris. In her docu-series, Biles reveals her journey in gymnastics, stating, “most of the time I’m just trying not to die.” The series captures her struggles with the mental block known as the twisties during the Tokyo Olympics, which led to her withdrawal, and follows her return to the mat after a two-year hiatus.

Biles also discusses her signature move, the Yurchenko double pike, also known as Biles II on vault. She candidly admits, “Just scary. Every time you do it, you are scared.” Despite having performed the vault almost 100 times, she finds it equally terrifying each time. Biles emphasizes that the vault requires not only physical strength but also significant mental fortitude, combining power, good air awareness, and many other components. Even others weighed in saying, “that vault, you know, you have to balance the risk involved versus the playoff.”

Simone emphasized her meticulous approach to vault routines, often gauging their success mid-air. Renowned for her intricate performances, notably the Yurchenko double pike, she faced unexpected constraints in Tokyo, unable to choose to execute her signature moves. Devastated by this loss of freedom, Simone’s repertoire boasts several eponymous feats: the Biles I, a double layout half out, and the Biles II, a triple double on floor. Her vault innovations include the Biles, featuring a Yurchenko half-on with two twists, and a daring double pike. On the balance beam, her trademark double-double dismount showcases her unmatched skill.

The Yurchenko Double Pike has been attempted by American gymnasts Paul Juda and David Sender, which is one of the hardest vault routine options out there. This is what makes the segment about the YDP so interesting to watch in the documentary. Which has been directed by sports filmmaker Katie Walsh. It’s edited in a way that feels like one long interview with Biles, while cutting back to her performances in various events. It’s produced by Religion of Sports in association with the Olympic channel with Gotham Chopra, Ameeth Sankaran, Giselle Parents, Janey Miller, JT Taylor and Yiannis Exarchos as executive producers.

In her own words, “We are all the authors of our own journeys, and I am in a place in my life where I’m comfortable with who I am and what I’ve been through as an athlete, but most of all, as a person. Gymnastics is what I do but it’s not who I am, and I’m excited for people to see another side of me outside of competition.” In the poster beside a stunning picture of Biles are the words “Icon. Champion. Human” and the documentary is focused on showing all three sides of our favorite gymnast.

Simone Biles looks back at the mental blocks

During the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, Simone Biles stumbled in the individual vault event as she could even “comprehend” doing a twist. This is a type of mental block that is referred to as the Twisties. Biles described it saying, “Literally can not tell up from down. It’s the craziest feeling ever. Not having an inch of control over your body. What’s even scarier is since I have no idea where I am in the air, I also have NO idea how I am going to land. Or what I am going to land on. Head/hands/feet back…”

Later she quit the Olympics because she felt her safety was at risk alongside the team medal. It was a tumultuous time for the gymnast as she received a lot of criticism from fans who were eager to watch her win gold. But USA Gymnastics supported the decision saying, “We wholeheartedly support Simone’s decision and applaud her bravery in prioritizing her well-being.” During this Olympic cycle, Simone Biles has been riding a wave of success, securing yet another spot on the Olympic team with hopes of adding to her impressive stack of 7 medals.

Could the Fourth of July have been any better for Simone Biles and Jonathan Owens? Fresh off of securing her ticket to the Paris Olympics just a few days prior, Biles got a gift to go with it. As for Owens, not only did he witness his wife make more history at Target Center, but he’s also set to fly with her to the City of Love, courtesy of a special exemption from the Chicago Bears training camp. It’s safe to say the mood in the Biles-Owens household is pretty good right now, as was evident from their Fourth of July update!

Flaunting her riches may not be Simone Biles’ style, but every now and then, fans get snippets of it. From her and Jonathan Owens’ beautiful wedding to the glimpses of their chic home, their aesthetic is undeniably sophisticated. And the Chicago Bears safety’s Instagram update was just that: a dazzling display of luxury and affection. But what turned heads was their opulent accessories. One standout piece, though, was Jonathan’s watch.

It seems the power couple has a thing for watches. While Biles didn’t sport her newest present in the photo shoot, Jonathan Owens showed off Rolex Datejust in Oyster Steel and Everose gold, valued at around $20,000. That’s not to say the most decorated gymnast didn’t flaunt her own accessories. The pair wore matching emblazoned with “Team USA” and accessorized them with eye-catching diamonds.

They wore their wedding rings along with diamond earrings and chains, with Simone even sporting her “OWENS” pendant. Simone Biles and Jonathan Owens collectively showcased over $300,000 worth of sparkling diamonds, underscoring their status as one of the sports world’s most stylish and captivating pairs. Sharing three pictures from the classy photo shoot, Owens wrote, “No, we ain’t perfect, but we damn close ♥️🤍💙”

Evidently, Jonathan Owens enjoys the finer things in life. Reportedly, he spent $300,000 on their wedding rings. They even got matching grillz during their wedding. Additionally, earlier in January, when he played for the Green Bay Packers, he bought Simone a diamond necklace with a “J” on it. The gifts don’t stop there, though. Owens bought Simone something truly special after she qualified for the Olympics.

In June this year, Biles posted an Instagram story about the Audemars Piguet Mini Royal Oak watch in three colors: rose gold, silver, and frosted white gold. She captioned it, “If any jeweler has one of these in stock for purchase, specifically the frosted white gold,” and asked them to message her directly. But after Biles placed first in the all-around competition at the Olympic Trials with a score of 117.225, she posted a picture of a dazzling Audemars Piguet Royal Oak watch encrusted with diamonds. She captioned it, “baby,” suggesting that Owens was the one who gifted it to her.

Simone Biles and Jonathan Owens are more about genuine moments than material things

Simone Biles has been vocal about a fear of hers: “I have a fear of going broke.” While she may not need to worry about that – courtesy of all her earnings due to being one of the most widely known athletes in the world – it doesn’t mean she doesn’t. Considering her financial struggles as a child, Biles learned to handle her expenses right from her first paycheck. She got that when she was just 12.

Fast forward to the present day, when she’s 27 with an estimated net worth of $16 million, this aspect of her life hasn’t changed. Simone Biles has stated that she likes to measure her expenses and avoid spending unnecessarily. “I never really swipe the [credit] card. I will only splurge if I earned it.” Even during her wedding, Biles made some economical choices. She wore a $120 gown bought online from a boutique called Selfie Leslie and $35 shoes.

As for her other half, when the couple appeared on The Pivot Podcast, Owens opened up about how being an NFL player doesn’t necessarily mean he’s a multi-millionaire. He also emphasized how his mother and wife keep him from making bad financial decisions. He recalled an incident where “just the other day, [Biles said], ‘No, you’re not getting – they’re not getting that for Christmas. I don’t care what you say.” That said, Owens – with a net worth of $7 million –  has his priorities straight as he gifts Simone Biles things on her wishlist.

With a trip to Paris for the Olympic Games set in her near future, Simone Biles had to say goodbye to her husband, Jonathan Owens.

On Monday, the three-time Olympian shared a pair of snaps to her Instagram Story featuring herself and her husband as she gets ready to join Team USA abroad.

‘See you in Paris baby,’ wrote Biles, who just recently celebrated her one-year wedding anniversary.

The seven-time Olympic medalist shares a smile with a shirtless Owens in one of the snaps.

In another, she showed a comfy looking bed covered in an Olympics quilt with a stuffed animal – appearing to be a goat – also sitting on it.

Owens is set to take some time away from Chicago Bears training camp in order to watch his wife compete at the Paris Games.

He recently told People about his enthusiasm to watch Biles do her thing on the world’s stage.

‘It’s super exciting just because I get a chance to see all the work that she puts in prior to, and you know what? Everything she goes through and dealing with the media and everything, and she still goes out there and does it,’ Owens said, while speaking about his new partnership with GoodSport. ‘It’s just impressive.’

Owens said that in their downtime from watching Biles try to smash the competition, they plan on viewing some art and doing a little shopping as the Bears safety visits the City of Light for the first time.

‘I’m ready. I’m excited,’ he told PEOPLE. ‘I can’t wait to watch.’

Biles also shared one thing the couple has in common – that they both enjoy getting their hair done.

In a video call with Elle Magazine, Biles mentioned how she had recently gotten braids in her hair – with Owens telling her ‘Oh my gosh I love it’.

‘He loves the smell of hair being straightened,’ Biles told the magazine. ‘He gets his hair braided every two weeks, so we’re in a similar boat.’

Legendary USA gymnast and Olympics superstar Simone Biles wants the false narrative that nobody watches women’s sports to end. After all, the numbers say otherwise.

In a strong message to critics who do not put enough respect towards women’s sports, Biles took to her Instagram Stories to share the latest viewership numbers that the Olympic trials for US gymnastics and track and field generated.

According to the latest data, the US gymnastic trials averaged 7.6 million viewers across NBC, peaking at 8.2 million viewers. Meanwhile, the US track and field trials garnered 4.5 million viewers, marking a 38 percent increase from the 2021 iteration of the event.

Biles then captioned her post with, “Psssstttt. What’s that thing they say about women’s sports?”

It’s certainly great to see women’s sports get more attention and viewership. While there’s still a lot of work to be done to further grow the game, women’s sports have certainly taken significant strides over the last few years.

The good news is that there are plenty of athletes who are helping boost the status of women’s sports. Simone Biles, for one, continues to be the face of USA gymnastics. There are also the likes of WNBA All-Stars Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese who just bring so much attention to women’s basketball.
