Jarrell Miller

Jarrell Miller is seemingly well aware that he could now be in boxing’s last chance saloon.

The controversial heavyweight, who has failed multiple drugs tests across his career, is set to face Andy Ruiz on August 3 as part of the undercard of Terence Crawford’s clash with Israil Madrimov in LA.

Miller initially built an undefeated record of 23-0-1 when he came to prominence as a heavyweight contender in 2018.

This record secured him a date to fight Anthony Joshua in June 2019.

However, he failed several drugs tests and so was pulled from the bout.

Funnily enough, it was Ruiz who famously replaced him at short notice and knocked out Joshua in one of the biggest upsets in modern boxing history.

Miller attempted to return in 2020 as he’d avoided a ban due to a loophole – he wasn’t licensed by any American commission at the time of his positive tests.

However, when he tried to get back in the ring he tested positive once more and this time did receive a ban.

It was only in 2022, after a three-and-a-half year absence, that Miller finally fought again.

It seems he’s very aware this could be his final big opportunity as new pictures from his training camp show he might be in the best shape of his career.

The huge heavyweight normally weighs upwards of 300lbs for his fights.

He has not come in below that number since 2017, and most recently scaled 333lbs for the Dubois defeat.

Heavyweight boxer Jarrell Miller was arrested for allegedly taking part in a car robbery.

According to news reports in America, the incident took place on Tuesday at a car dealership in Hollywood, Florida.

According to reports from an employee, it is alleged that a woman claimed she had left her mobile phone in a truck that was recently repossessed.

The employee then went to get the keys of the car when the person was reportedly grabbed from behind and put in a chokehold by Miller, who demanded the keys.

The employee then claims Miller slammed them to the ground, took the keys and made off in the truck.

According to police, the truck had a tracker in it which led to them finding and arresting Miller.

In court on Wednesday afternoon, the charges read out to Miller were carjacking without firearm or weapon, burglary with assault.

“It is alleged that Mr. Miller first put the victim in a chokehold, then slammed him to the ground before robbing him,” said Assistant State Attorney Eric Linder.

“[The employee] was doing nothing other than his job.”

Linder continued: “He enlisted the assistance of another individual to create a ruse, to distract the employee.”

Miller’s lawyers claimed there was not enough probable cause for the two charges against him, but the judge disagreed.

Miller remained in custody at Broward County Jail as of Wednesday night. The American has a bond set of $30,000 (£26,600).

It comes less than two weeks after Miller’s fight against Britain’s Daniel Dubois in Saudi Arabia on the Anthony Joshua vs Otto Wallin undercard.

Miller was beaten, getting stopped in the tenth and final round of the bout, to suffer the first defeat of his professional career.

There’s perhaps no more bitter a heavyweight rival than Anthony Joshua and Jarrell Miller.

The two fighters haven’t yet made it into the ring, but have had plenty of verbals at press conferences and appear to harbour genuine bad blood.

That hasn’t stopped the controversial American from giving credit where it’s due.

In a promotional feature with DAZN, Miller rated the knockouts of fellow fighters, and was shown ‘AJ’s finish of Dillian Whyte back in 2015. Despite the animosity, he gave it top marks.

Joshua and Whyte met for the British Heavyweight title following a bitter build-up that promised spitfeful action from the first bell. The fight delivered on that front, with the favourite quickly disregarded his gameplan in favour of a firefight.

Joshua was notably wobbled by Whyte in an exchange, but it was a storm he would weather before delivering the final blow – an uppercut to cap off an unanswered flurry that sent Whyte onto his back out cold.

Joshua won the IBF Heavyweight World title in his next outing against Charles Martin, added the WBO to his collection against Wladimir Klitschko one year later and took the WBA from Joseph Parker in 2018.

Miller was to get a shot at all three of those belts in New York, but tested positive for various banned substances and was replaced with Andy Ruiz Jr – the man who changed the trajectory of Joshua’s career by handing him his first loss.

The Brit won the titles back in an immediate rematch, but would later lose them to Oleksandr Usyk and fail in his second crack at beating the Ukrainian.

He looks to continue to fight his way back to the top on December 23, sharing a card with Miller who faces Daniel Dubois.

Jarrell Miller has still got plenty to say about Anthony Joshua in the run-up to them appearing on the same card together on December 23 in Saudi Arabia.

Miller is one boxer who has managed to get under ‘AJ’s skin more than most. There were heated verbal altercations and even some pushing at the weigh-in for their ill-fated fight at Madison Square Garden in New York back in 2019.

Due to Miller then failing drugs tests in the weeks leading up to it, the fight never happened, but that hasn’t stopped ‘Big Baby’ from constantly firing shots at the two-time world champion.

Although he recently claimed that Joshua ‘called to apologise’ after the first press conference to announce the huge card in Saudi where the Brit faces Otto Wallin and Miller comes up against Daniel Dubois, he has continued to lay into him.

Oleksandr Tyson ANTHONY Deontay

During an interview with Boxing News, Miller explained why he doesn’t see Joshua as a true champion, but feels that Tyson Fury is.

Joshua will be hoping to prove MIiller wrong as, should he get past Wallin, he will have eyes on Deontay Wilder who could well be the man he needs to beat to become the mandatory challenger for the WBC belt.

That will be held by one of Tyson Fury or Oleksandr Usyk once they have settled their differences in their undisputed fight on February 17.

Whether or not he and Miller will ever come to blows given how their first proposed fight fell apart is unknown. For now, Miller has plenty on his hands with Dubois.

Promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom is expecting a knockout ending in the upcoming crossroads heavyweight clash between Daniel Dubois and Jarrell Miller.

Their fight will be part of the big boxing card on December 23 in Saudi Arabia.

The card will be headlined by Hearn’s biggest star, former two-time world champion Anthony Joshua, who faces top contender Otto Wallin.

“It’s a great fight. Miller will either get stopped or he’ll stop Daniel Dubois. If he gets stopped that’s the end of Jarrell Miller, if he stops Daniel Dubois he’s right back in the mix,” Hearn told Fight Hub TV.

Miller has a long history of animosity with Joshua.

Anthony Joshua

They were scheduled to collide in 2019 in New York City, but Miller was pulled from the fight after testing positive for numerous performance enhancing drugs.

During the press conference to announce the December card, Joshua and Miller resumed their hostilities by trading heated words.

Should Miller secure an impressive win over Dubois, then a fight with Joshua could be a possibility down the line.

“Joshua wants to smash him up. Don’t forget the beef that those two had in New York, then the round table which nobody has seen yet but I’m sure it will get released one day soon. There is history there,” Hearn said.

“We know why the fight didn’t happen and there are a lot of people from our side that aren’t happy with what he did. The fight has never come back round because I felt like he didn’t deserve it. But sometimes time is a good healer and if he can beat Daniel Dubois then I’m sure he’ll scream and shout in that ring and say ‘I want AJ’ and then commercially that fight becomes big. Good luck to Jarrell, I don’t have dislike or hatred towards him, I don’t like what I saw but good luck.”

The wait goes on for British heavyweight Frazer Clarke.

The unbeaten 32 year old is still hoping that a deal can be agreed for him to face British heavyweight champion, Fabio Wardley, early next year.

Last month, Wardley stopped David Adeleye to successfully defend his belt in Saudi Arabia and remains a promotional free agent.

Wardley is sure to have plenty of offers for his services and there isn’t likely to be a quick decision made on if, when and where Clarke (8-0, 6 KO’s) will get his shot so the 2020 Olympic bronze medallist allowed himself to slip into fan mode last week.

Clarke was an interested observer when the protagonists of the massive December 23rd show in Saudi Arabia came together at last week’s launch press conference.

As well as providing boxing fans with a tantalizing glimpse of exactly what the future may hold given this influx of Saudi Arabian money, the event was manna from heaven for armchair psychologists. With Eddie Hearn and Frank Warren seated within six feet of each other for the first time ever and heavyweight rivals Deontay Wilder, Anthony Joshua and Jarrell Miller all sat at the top table, those who seems to care more about clickbait, drama and politics than actually fighting were in their element.

Anthony Joshua

Joshua’s behavior attracted the most attention. There was a surreal, celebratory atmosphere to the who press conference but the two-time unified heavyweight champion wasn’t in the mood to join in, he was clearly there for business. He and Miller reignited their long running feud and the outspoken American clearly angered Joshua with a few deliberately chosen putdowns.

Joshua then switched his attention to his opponent for December 23rd, Otto Wallin, and exchanged a few words with the mild-mannered Swede when they came face to face. To the initiated, it was little more than fight talk and fight behavior but those who watch interviews with their thumb hovering over their phone ready to deliver their searing hot takes couldn’t help but make their opinions on Joshua’s frame of mind known.

Clarke knows Joshua well and took it all with one big pinch of salt.

“You can take what you want from it. It’s an argument. I have road rage every day with people, it doesn’t bother me once I get home, it’s been and gone. It’s a bit of squabbling,” Clarke told SecondsOut.

“‘Oh, Joshua’s rattled. Oh, Tyson Fury was rattled by Usyk,’ they aren’t rattled, they’re just having a bit of a say. 24 hours later, I’m sure they’ve gone home, gone to sleep in a three or four million pound mansion, put their feet up, sat in a jacuzzi, got the chef to bring some food over and they’ve forgot about it. They aren’t worried about that.

“Joshua’s job is fighting. He isn’t bothered about squabbles at press conferences. People always say people are rattled. We aren’t rattled. We’re fighting people. We don’t get rattled by words, we get rattled if someone smashes us in the jaw or breaks your nose or cuts your eye. We’re not rattled by words off idiots like Jarrell Miller. He’s a cheat, he shouldn’t even be up there. How’s that f——- idiot getting paid all that money to go over to Saudi Arabia to fight. He’s a cheat, he shouldn’t be boxing. It’s f——- wrong but there we go.”
