Talor Gooch says he’s not in favour of LIV Golf changing their format anytime soon.

The breakaway tour’s 2023 individual champion spoke to a group of reporters ahead of their event next week in Adelaide.

Aside from reacting to Scottie Scheffler’s Masters victory, Gooch was pressed on rumours LIV could alter their format.

Recent LIV recruit Jon Rahm spoke of his desire to move to 72 holes before his Masters defence ended in frustration.

“I don’t know if I’m alone in this, but I definitely wouldn’t mind going back to 72 holes,” Rahm said.

Rahm’s comments prompted Phil Mickelson to say he would not be surprised to see LIV move to 72.

He said: “We need to focus on the fans. How do we tailor a product and exciting event to the fans?

“And just my opinion through my experience of 54 holes, it just appears to be more exciting.”

Gooch, 32, added: “It’s just funny to me, this arbitrary number of 72. Why is it not 90?

“Why is it not 108? We just decided to make that number the number, for what reason?”

It was previously argued LIV should have changed their format sooner to help with their bid for world ranking points.

But the breakaway tour officially withdrew their application with the governing body in March.

LIV had previously seen their application officially rejected after more than one year of deliberations.

Gooch added: “Everyone’s talked about world ranking points and all this stuff, but no one’s talked about what do the fans enjoy more?

“People want something that’s going to be more exciting.

“And I personally think that the 54 holes is more exciting for the fans.”

LIV Golf Adelaide will be played over 26-28 April at the Grange Golf Club.

Gooch is the defending champion.

In other LIV news, there is rising speculation that Viktor Hovland is the latest PGA Tour the circuit has in their crosshairs.

And Rory McIlroy has emphatically denied a report suggesting he was on the verge of joining for $850m.

“I will play the PGA Tour for the rest of my life,” McIlroy said.

Long-time LIV Golf critic Brandel Chamblee believes the whole rumour was orchestrated by LIV officials.

The suspension of newly-announced LIV Golf star Jon Rahm has improved the PGA Tour playing rights of three of his fellow players in Mackenzie Hughes, Alex Smalley and Carl Yuan.

Rahm became the latest big name to swap the Tour for the LIV setup, following in the footsteps of the likes of Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson and Brooks Koepka. The Spaniard however is the breakaway league’s biggest coup yet, having reportedly signed a £450 million deal.

Whilst the Masters champion is a big win for the Saudi-funded series, it is an even bigger loss for the PGA Tour, with pressure beginning to mount on the American-based circuit amid the continued rise of their LIV rivals.

It appears there is a benefit to some Tour members though, especially Hughes. Having been banned from the PGA Tour, Rahm has been removed from the FedEx Cup standings which has of thus seen everybody else move one place up in the list.

For Canadian star Hughes this sees him move into the top-50 on the list, earning him a spot in the circuit’s elevated events in 2024. Prior to his jump up the rankings, Hughes took to social media on the back of Rahm’s mega-money switch to have his say on the state of professional golf and the increasing influence of money on the game.

“Men’s professional golf is in a sad place. The direction it’s headed right now isn’t healthy or good for the sport,” he tweeted. “Unfortunately, money has changed things. Charity used to be a huge priority on tour, but it’s taken a backseat.

“LIV has overvalued the worth of golfers so much that it has ruined our perspective, and pushed purses to unsustainable levels. The marketplace seems broken.” He went on: “It is frustrating to watch. I’m also a huge sports fan and would hate for my favorite players to get plucked away one by one.”

As well as the Canadian, there are improved playing privileges for Smalley too, whose move into 52nd in the list ensures he will able to play at the Genesis Invtiational and AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am next year. Elsewhere Yuan is another big beneficiary after moving into the all-important top-125 which earns him a full PGA Tour card for 2024.

Rahm’s suspension comes as no surprise on the back of his Saudi switch, but there is hope the Spaniard could make a return in the future with the PGA Tour continuing to negotiate with LIV backers, the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia.

On the back of his move last Thursday, Rahm himself is hopeful to play across all three of the LIV league, PGA Tour and DP World Tour. I do want to maintain my PGA Tour and DPWT status I will not give that up,” the green jacket winner admitted

“Hopefully with the freedom LIV gives me I can play both those tours. There are certain PGA Tour events I want to play as long as my schedule allows. If possible, I want to make that happen.”

Jon Rahm has revealed he had no choice but to snub Phil Mickelson from discussions over joining him in LIV Golf in a record-breaking move.

Rahm has confirmed he has accepted a lucrative deal – believed to be the biggest in golf history – to join Mickelson in the Saudi-funded golf league. While he remained coy on the details, he’s reported to have earned a £450million deal thanks to a huge signing fee to join Mickelson and co.

Mickelson has been a leading figure since being one of the first players to ditch the PGA Tour and lead the LIV-led revolt among the sport’s top stars. But Rahm insists he had absolutely no role in his own decision to follow suit.

Phil Mickelson

The Spaniard has admitted previously turning to the American ace for advice – but claims the nature of negotiations meant he needed to keep him in the dark over his landmark move.

Asked if Mickelson played a part in his decision, Rahm told FOX News: “None. No role at all. All those players on LIV are finding out shortly after we’re doing this Q&A. No role at all.

“He’s somebody I lean on to for advice as I’ve always done but not somebody I’ve talked to. I know he wishes I could’ve talked to him but it’s not something I could’ve done.”

Rahm is close to fellow Spaniard and new LIV Golf colleague Sergio Garcia, but the same applied as far as he was concerned with concerns over any potential leaks.

“We couldn’t risk information coming out even though somehow it always does,” Rahm said. “It’s been certain texts I’ve had to diffuse and certain topics.

“He did reach out and he did talk to me a little bit. We’ve stayed in contact ever since he went so it’s not out of the ordinary.”

Phil Mickelson has refuted all claims suggesting he has been informing people Jon Rahm will sign with LIV Golf.

A report on Wednesday from a golf journalist, Alan Shipnuck, on social media claimed Mickelson, who shares the same agent as the Spaniard, had been telling people that Rahm would in fact be joining the breakaway league. The reporter further added that Mickelson is a ‘relentless salesman/bull**** artist’.

Furious, Mickelson replied to the claims and denied the words from the reporter. “This isn’t true, and I don’t know anything,” said Mickelson. “I don’t want to know anything, and I haven’t said anything. Alan is the worst liar and a pathetic human.”

Shipnuck responded to Mickelson’s denial a few hours later. “I guess Phil tweeted at me? I wouldn’t know since he’s blocked me in a classic tough-guy move. But we all know that what he says publicly and privately are *very* different.”

The history of conflict between Shipnuck and Mickelson stems from a report by the author, who claimed that the profound golfer previously referred to the people of Saudi Arabia as “scary motherf*****s.” Shipnuck published the unauthorized biography “Phil: The Rip-Roaring [and Unauthorized!] Biography of Golf’s Most Colorful Superstar” in May. He also wrote a golf business book, “LIV and Let Die: The Inside Story of the War Between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf,” which was released last month.

Reports are circulating that Jon Rahm may be considering switching to LIV Golf, just like other famous PGA Tour players who were offered huge contracts. It’s been speculated Rahm might be offered a deal of around $600 million (£476m) if he chooses to leave the PGA Tour. According to the Official World Golf Ranking [OWGR], Rahm is the No. 3 ranked golfer in the world. During the 2022-23 season, Rahm achieved a significant milestone, securing four wins on the PGA Tour for the first time in his career.

He clinched his second major championship title at the prestigious Masters Tournament. Rahm’s victories extended across other tournaments, including the Sentry Tournament of Champions, The American Express, and The Genesis Invitational. In doing so, Rahm tied with Sergio Garcia for the most wins on the PGA Tour by a Spanish-born player reaching 11 victories.

Rahm is the hottest prospect rumored to join LIV

Rahm joined the elite company of Seve Ballesteros and Jose Maria Olazabal as the third player from Spain to claim multiple significant titles. His victory at The Genesis Invitational marked a historic moment, making him the first player since Johnny Miller in 1975 to secure three wins on the Tour in a calendar year before March 1.

Rahm’s victory in the 2022-23 marked his seventh consecutive season with a PGA Tour win. If Rahm were to join LIV, the possibility arises of creating a formidable four-person Spanish team by partnering with Sergio Garcia’s Fireballs GC.

This potential team could include Rahm, Garcia, Eugenio Chacarra, and David Puig, presenting a robust lineup of Spanish talent in the golfing world. Such a collaboration could significantly affect team dynamics and performance in golf competitions.

Phil Mickelson has denied a report that he claimed Jon Rahm will move to LIV golf in a staggering $600m deal.

“In recent days Phil has been telling folks that Rahm signing with LIV is a done deal. (They share the same agent.),” the Fire Pit Collective’s Alan Shipnuck tweeted on Wednesday. “But we all know Mickelson is a relentless salesman/bulls(—) artist, so take that for what it’s worth.”

Michelson responded to those claims on X, previously known as Twitter. “This isn’t true and I don’t know anything. I don’t want to know anything and I haven’t said anything. Alan is the worst liar and a pathetic human.”

Rahm has repeatedly said that LIV’s 54-hole, team-based format does not interest him and that he’s more interested in legacy than money.

However, he recently withdrew from the virtual TGL backed by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy before the league was forced to postpone its debut to 2025 after the facility’s roof collapsed. Rahm is also good friends with fellow Spaniard Sergio Garcia and Mickelson, whose brother, Tim, was Rahm’s coach at Arizona State and agent when he first turned pro

Rahm is not playing in Wood’s Hero World Challenge next week, and he has not addressed rumors that he may bolt for LIV. McIlroy said earlier this month that he would “be surprised” if the world’s No. 3 player joined LIV.

“I spoke to Jon a couple days ago and would be very, very surprised if that were to happen,” McIlroy said Nov. 6. “I’m pretty confident Jon is a PGA Tour player.

Rahm is a two-time major winner and is exempt into each of the four majors for the next five years courtesy of his victory at the 2023 Masters. The inability to play in majors has been seen as one of the significant drawbacks for players joining LIV.

Rahm was also highly critical of the exclusion of LIV players from the Ryder Cup, specifically saying “it would be really stupid of anybody not to lean on Sergio Garcia’s experience.”

Mickelson said in October that he knew more players would be signing with LIV,

“Do I think that? No, I know that’s going to happen,” he said.

That’s despite the league’s future being murky as the PGA Tour and the Public Investment Fund continue to work on details of their framework agreement in conjunction with the DP World Tour.

LIV released is 2024 schedule on Wednesday, with one of the 14 events scheduled to be held in July in Andalucia, Spain.

While several marquee players have been strong in their criticism of LIV, Rahm has supported the decision of players to do what is in their best interests. He also said at last year’s Hero World Challenge that PGA players have benefited greatly from the challenge that LIV presented.

“I think on this side of things we should be thankful that LIV happened,” Rahm said last December. “I don’t know if those changes would have happened if LIV wasn’t in the picture. So to an extent, yeah, we should be thankful.”

He also said at the time that all of the animus between LIV and the PGA Tour is a “waste of time.”

Today Jon Rahm sent the golf world into a frenzy after his name was wiped off TGL’s official website and all other its social media pages. After this action, chaos followed, and numerous theories have been woven by fans and the media. A common idea that is coming to everyone’s head is that the reason for Rahm’s sudden disappearance is his joining of LIV Golf.

Famous golf journalist Alan Shipnuck, too, is sharing his opinion on the matter. Though he has some good things to say about the Spanish golfer, the author hopes that he won’t ignore his legacy for money.

Phil Mickelson rival joins the Jon Rahm TGL debate

Alan Shipnuck is a known golf journalist. But he is more famous for his decades-old feud with LIV defector Phil Mickelson. A sworn enemy of the golfer, Shipnuck doesn’t let any opportunity slide when it comes to staining the name of Mickelson. And the move by Rahm has provided him with a golden opportunity.

The sudden disappearance of Jon Rahm from all TGL platforms has presented a mystery that everyone is trying to solve. But Shipnuck has faith in Rahm. He believes that despite being provoked and misdirected by Mickelson, Rahm will remain true to himself. Jumping on the scene, Alan has made a tweet about it.

Rahm’s been a long-standing lust object for LIV, and no doubt the Mickelsons’ (his pal Phil and former manager Tim) are in his ear. But Rahm’s the rare athlete who is not voracious for money. He cares about his legacy. The tour is a winning formula for him, so I’m dubious he would leave.” This is Shipnuck’s response to the matter.

However, the disappearance of Rahm has left the PGA Tour supporters worried that LIV has finally gotten their hands on him.

Has Phil Mickelson given a warning to his rivals?

A few days ago, Mickelson made a statement that the PGA Tour would find alarming. He said, “The reality is, I’ve been fielding calls, as we all have, from players that are agents to PGA Tour players to DP World Tour players that want to come over. When players look at LIV, they are wanting to be a part of it.”

“Everybody here is happy and enjoying what we are doing, enjoying the team aspect of it, and enjoying each other and the camaraderie,” added Mickelson.

It sure is a matter of concern for the rival tour, who are worried that strong players like Rahm might change tours and abandon them.
