Simone Biles’s

Browsing

Simone Biles is one of the United States‘ top athletes, with more medals of any gymnast in the country’s history and widely regarded as one of the greatest in her field. She has claimed seven Olympic medals, but even those accolades do not guarantee her presence at the upcoming Paris Olympic Games.

The 27-year-old famously dropped out of the Tokyo Games last time around, citing mental health issues as the reason, which raised massive awareness of these kind of issues given her incredible feats of the past.

Now, as the Paris Games approach, some believe that she will either drop out altogether or pace herself through the competition.

Washington Post reporter Emily Giambalvo has claimed that Team USA Gymnastics Technical Lead Chellsie Memmel is considering dosing Biles’ appearances.

“Chellsie Memmel said she has talked with Cecile LandiSimone Biles‘s coach, about the option for Biles to not compete all four events in the team final if they feel that’s what’s best for her. Decision is up to Biles but the option is available,” wrote Giambalvo on X.

What did Memmel recently say about Biles’ condition?

This claim comes just under two weeks since Memmel publicly stated that Team USA is going all out for gold and that Simone Biles would be at the heart of that.

“If she can put together her normal gymnastics, there is no doubt in my mind that she can be an Olympic all-around champion,” Memmel told TMJ4.

“Simone paced herself really well. You know, coming back. Starting with last year. Competing, doing amazing at World Championships. You know, she’s added in even a little bit more difficulty coming into the Olympics.”

“When we’re at competitions together? You know I try to check in, but also I try to leave things up to her. You know, she knows where she’s at.

“The coaches are with her day in, day out. You know, they know her best. They know her in the gym. But also knowing that if she needs to do this? Or if she needs to have a therapy session? That’s what we’re going to do.”

To some, he’s the “face of boxing.”

To others, not so much.

Regardless, there’s little debate that Gervonta Davis is a big deal.

The WBA’s champion at 135 pounds added another log to his pay-per-view fire on Saturday night with an eighth-round knockout of previously unbeaten contender Frank Martin in his first appearance atop an Amazon Prime Video show from the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas.

It was the 30th victory in as many fights for the 29-year-old Davis, who defended for the fifth time in a lightweight reign stretching back to 2019.

He’s won titles at 126, 130 and 140 pounds at one point or another, too, which keeps several options open going forward when it comes to possible options for his next appearance. The B/R combat team seized on that narrative to compile a list of possibilities for the “Tank” going forward and we invite you to take a look at what we came up with and drop a comment.

The first fight was nice, so why not do it twice?

That’d be a welcome result for the future if it means another fight between Davis and Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz, who became the first man to go 12 full rounds with the “Tank” as a late substitute for Rolando Romero atop a Showtime pay-per-view show in December 2021.

Davis won seven rounds on two scorecards and eight on another to capture a narrow unanimous decision in the bout, which prompted calls—particularly from Cruz’s team—for a rematch, a prospect that’s gained traction now that Cruz has picked up a belt of his own (the WBA’s title at 140 pounds) with a KO of Romero three months ago in Las Vegas.

Davis fought Saturday. Cruz has a defense set for August.

Then, if Cruz gets his way, the holiday season becomes fight season.

“December is perfect,” his manager, Sean Gibbons, told Boxing Scene. “We’re not chasing Tank now that we have the belt, but everywhere we go, everyone wants to know when we’re fighting Gervonta Davis. He’ll fight. Then Pitbull will fight. And we’ll be ready.”

Who We Wish It Would Be: Shakur Stevenson

Davis and Shakur Stevenson share space atop the lightweight mountain with their respective claims to the WBA and WBC title belts, and they’re also frequently within a spot or two of one another on most respected pound-for-pound lists, including B/R’s rundown for June.

They’re both unbeaten and in their 20s, too, which makes it a super fight in the making.

But, because boxing is well, boxing…it’s not such a guarantee.

Davis is aligned with Al Haymon and the Premier Boxing Champions apparatus while Stevenson is promoted by Bob Arum and Top Rank, which makes the prospect of them meeting any time soon about as likely as a snowstorm on South Beach.

That doesn’t stop media types from clamoring for it. Nor does it keep either fighter from suggesting the other is at or near the top of his hit list.

“Trust me, Shakur is going to get that work,” Leonard Ellerbe, who serves as an advisor to Davis, told Boxing Scene. “He’s asking for it, and he’s going to get it. It ain’t what he thinks it is. I can’t wait for it to happen.”

Who It Could Be: Gary Antuanne Russell

3 OF 4

So, like we said, boxing is boxing.

Which in this case means the most likely occurrence now that Davis has beaten Martin, who’s also a PBC-aligned fighter, is that he once again stays in the family and moves forward against another previously unbeaten PBC teammate, Gary Antuanne Russell, in his next time around.

Russell, the youngest of a family of boxing brothers, chased his 18th straight win on Saturday’s undercard but dropped a split decision to Alberto Puello that cost him the WBC’s dubious “interim” title belt one weight class up from Davis at 140 pounds.

Previously, his biggest victories came against ex-champions Viktor Postol (TKO 10) and Rances Barthelemy (TKO 6) in February and July of 2022.

He’s spent all of his seven-year career between 136.5 and 139.5 pounds while scoring KOs in all of his wins, but insists he could get to 135 if offered a Davis fight.

“It’d be Tank. Who wouldn’t want to see that,” Russell told The Boxing Voice.

“Me and Tank, that’s fireworks. That’s fireworks. I’m not laying down for nobody. My determination is just different from everybody else.”

What Would Break the Internet: Floyd Mayweather Jr.

4 OF 4

This is why we have the internet anyway, right?

So fans and fighters and writer types can engage in device-to-device beefs and make wild suggestions about fantastical fights that could never exist without digital context.

Ladies and gentlemen, we give you Davis and Floyd Mayweather Jr.

The two men began with a father/son or mentor/mentee relationship, to the point where Davis was the prime property in Mayweather’s business portfolio as he made the full-time transition from fighting to promoting after retiring from the ring in 2015.

Their union ended in 2021 and soon devolved into a flurry of insults and other snipes, moving to social media during the Martin fight week when Davis warned prospective clients against signing with Mayweather’s company.

“If you sign with this fraud..he will fu** up ya career,” Davis posted on Instagram. “He’s not a good businessman at all.”

That led Mayweather to post a Davis-Martin fight poster with a suggestion the event was canceled, and Davis smiled while including Mayweather on a list of possible foes during an interview with Marca.com, saying “September, November” and indicating that Mayweather, now 47 years old, would be the toughest opponent of the group.

“He feels I’m at this point where I’ll pass him,” Davis said. “And I’m doing it at a young age.”

It’s June, and that means I cannot so much as walk at a leisurely pace to the mailbox without doing irreparable damage to any makeup I’m wearing. Even on a just-mascara-and-some-concealer kind of day, the slightest physical exertion means the mascara migrates and some concealer becomes none concealer. So after seeing Simone Biles kick an outrageous amount of ass at the U.S. Gymnastics Championships over the weekend with a glamorous makeup look that was as flawless on the podium as it was before she did her first flip, I need to know what kind of witchcraft her makeup artist is using.

Simone Biles‘s Texan abode holds a distinct corner in the gymnast’s heart. Since the construction of it took place, the 27-year-old American legend didn’t miss a single chance to showcase her excitement on social media. Even after spending days away from husband Jonathan Owens because of a sporting engagement previously, the house construction episodes were enough to make Simone Biles merrier. Now, on the eve of Jonathan’s new NFL contract with the Chicago Bears, the Texan ‘Dreamhouse’ has seemed to have some new pairings.

This time as well, the Rio Olympics champion couldn’t hold her excitement in showcasing the fresh addition to her ‘lovely’ abode. In the meantime, the occasion conceded several more messages when Jonathan is on the brink of moving distances apart from a loving wife.

Simone Biles’s Texan connection is getting firmer

On January 28, the gymnast sparked her IG story with two visuals. Both scenes indicate that the couple is going to add marble plates to garnish the accommodation. Husband Jonathan Owens has appeared on the scene, taking a keen look at the plates, whereas the proud wife Simone has captured the entire moment. Hinting at the occasion, she has captioned the story with “making selections”. However, when it comes to practicing bonding with Texas, Simone Biles has shared multiple engagements.

The April 1-4 timeline has stepped up to hold the National Gymnastics Camp for the women category in Katy, Texas. After the February occasion, this time‌ Simone Biles will don her leotard to practice the moves. Moreover, the essentiality of the occasion has brought in a distinct meaning because of its Olympic trial selection standard. So, being in Texas has become a necessity for the 7x Olympic medalist now. Her training spree with the World Champions Centre in Texas opens another obligation for her to stay in Texas. So, with all these circumstances, the indication points in a certain direction.

Will the couple stay far away from each other again?

After much razzmatazz regarding Jonathan Owens’s signing to the Chicago Bears, the fan interest revolved around Simone Biles. It was because of her standpoint regarding a shift to Chicago. Previously, a niggling distance with JO kept Simone at bay, asking for warmth. But this time, things have seemed to be distinct, as both the athletes will have to spend a fair amount of time on their engagements.

As the Paris Olympics is knocking on the door, Simone Biles will be up for her training schedule in the Texan facility. On the other hand, the NFL safety will eye for a comeback after being axed from the Green Bay Packers lineup. Nonetheless, Simone Biles has displayed her interest in Chicago cuisine and other intangible parts in the past weeks. But the latest situation is describing another episode of parting ways between her and Jonathan.

As hype grows for the 2024 gymnastics season, fans hoping to see Simone Biles’s victorious comeback to the Olympic stage were in for a surprise. The gymnastics GOAT and her husband, Jonathan Owens, decided to go on a romantic holiday, temporarily halting the gymnastics fever. After their destination wedding in Mexico in April 2023, the power couple finally found time for a secret trip, sharing photos of their lovely getaway on Instagram stories.

One such story highlighted Simone’s romantic beach walk, captioned “Ready to go on vacation again.” Owens joined along, sharing a video of the stunning setting, replete with beach blankets and deck chairs, and recently became a paparazzi for his stunner wife.

While gymnastics fans awaited Biles’ participation at the Winter Cup in Louisville, Kentucky, she instead delighted her fans with a carousel of breathtaking vacation photos, jokingly advising, “Prepare to be sick of me,” under a shot of Owens on a flight. In response, Owens took to his Instagram story and shared a photo of his wife wearing a white lingerie set with a black net floor-length dress.

Earlier, Biles gave a sneak peek into their location by uploading a photo of their journey; however, they later revealed they were in Hawaii. Sharing a wedding card of their close pals, Keely Amelia Cartrett and Kamu Grugier-Hill. The athletic power couple attended the wedding week in Hawaii, with Biles sharing, “Let’s get y’all married,” against the backdrop of the beach.

Biles had committed to attending this wedding just a month into the married club last year. The 26-year-old gymnast confirmed their participation in the festive activities by uploading a photo of the wedding card, captioning “Meet us in Hawaii,” and tagging the now-married couple. Although she missed out on her childhood best friend’s wedding in October.  Owens and Biles began dating in March 2020, but their relationship was made harder by long-distance when Owens signed a new deal with the Green Bay Packers. However, this year came a change: Jonathan’s NFL season ended, allowing him to spend Valentine’s Day enjoying his wife.

Jonathan Owens celebrates Simone Biles

What better way than reliving the best day of a relationship on Valentine’s? The 28-year-old Packers safety shared pictures from their engagement. “It’s been two years since this beautiful day; time truly flies. You are my rock, and I feel like I can do anything with you at my side,” read Owens sweet note on Instagram.

In February 2022, Owens proposed to Biles going on one knee on Valentine’s Day during golden hour at Brenner’s Steakhouse on the Bayou in Houston.
Biles responded by saying in the comments, “I love you more than ever, baby🤍 Best decision ever,” resharing on her Instagram story.

As Simone Biles removes her leotard for a well-deserved holiday, her fans are treated to stunning sights and the Biles-Owens’s quality time together.

Simone Biles’s engagement with her gymnastic love continued over thick and thin. Her growing days back in Houston or the dilemma in continuing with the gym facility at that time expressed the hardship the legendary sporting individual survived. So even after achieving a plethora of success in the gymnastic arena, Simone Biles has not erased those painful memories. In certain phases related to the American doyenne’s off-court livelihood, those impressions have presented themselves promptly. One can clearly see one such impression in her branding engagements.

Last year, Lambeau Field witnessed Simone Biles, being more than just hosting the NFL WAGs. Her other brand engagement as well, held her in more humanely, withering the off-rooted color.

Simone Biles aims to be more than a sporting mavin

Simone Biles didn’t attempt some superhuman tricks in her branding engagements. Rather, her daily deeds are displayed in most of such engagements. One such came off just after Biles appeared in Lambeau Field, shouting for her husband, Jonathan Owens. The brand, Nulo Pet Food, garnered hype as it framed the loving mother of Lilo and Rambo Biles pampering her pets. “As an athlete, I’ve come to appreciate the importance of fueling my body with the right nutrition, and I feel the same way when it comes to feeding my dogs @thebilesfrenchies”, Simone Biles added, promoting the brand on IG.

Apart from the pedigree, the 26-year-old American gymnast highlighted another affair where she promoted the selling of her name-marked GOAT mat. Eventually, it was the sponsor, SPIETH America, who came forward to elevate the shopping season. Even after taking a break from the gymnastic schedule at that point, the all-around champion found no chink in her popularity. Eventually, this popularity beheld Simone Biles once, when she had declined a lucrative offer to stand for her choice to empower women.

Choice of being more than just a promoter: the Athleta connection

In 2021, Nike had faced its one foremost hiccup as Simone Biles had barred herself from staying in its sponsorship. The step had felt more intensive as previously another Olympic champion, Alyson Felix, had lambasted the brand for their outright dismantling stand on women’s issues. Felix had signed the agreement with Athleta after that. Meanwhile, Simone had taken almost a similar step by ignoring Nike for Athleta. The $2 billion brand owned by Gap had impressed the All-Around World Cup champion so much that she had conceded once, “they stand for everything that I stand for.”

That emphatic journey still continues. From releasing the Athleta Girl line collection to the green puffer jacket in Lambeau Field, the brand engagement panned out to be an empowering statement. Simone Biles’s special collection for the brand, Because I Can” motivated the same stand. Her fans would like to see Simone Biles in many more such brand engagements in the coming days.

Simone Biles‘s Valentine’s Day celebration is not in the mood to stop any soon. The 7-time Olympic podium-earning gymnast is now enjoying her off-days from the mat. However, there’s still ambiguity about her participation in the Winter Cup later this month. But that couldn’t drop an ink on the American sensation’s colorful days in the last two weeks.

Previously, it was Simone Biles Invitational that dismounted any chance of absence from the Ohio-native gymnast. Next, in the Texas camp, she was surprised when she watched her partner-on-beam, Suni Lee, make a comeback. Now it was a turn for the celebration hues. Valentine’s Day brings out a special color for the 26-year-old gymnast, apart from being the love day. The day fervently flaunts Simone Biles’s engagement occasion. So on that measure, the celebration went long, holding nothing back.

Simone Biles finds her off-court best buddies in her celebration

Simone Biles recently hosted a gathering for her loved ones where she emphasized the importance of spending time together. The guest list included Avery, Rebecca Delaney, Sam, Averie Brook, Mallory, and Kayla Simone, along with Rachel Moore and Adria Biles. A heartwarming plaque on the table read, “GIRLS JUST WANNA HAVE FUN,” and the IG post sharing pictures from the party captioned “galentines”.

The party thoroughly developed Simone Biles, obstructing all her strictly followed lifestyle cultures. In the shared snaps, the camaraderie with the girls’ gang drove her to consume the pancakes and soft drinks. In the past, the gymnast shared a snippet of her recent days when her soft drink-gilded celebration times turned into protein shakes, consuming regular ones. But a thorough help from her loved ones, including the favored girls’ gang and husband Jonathan Owens, garnered hope for Simone Biles. However, Simone Biles’ hype-girl missed the merriment that took place in Texas. Similarly, the 23x world champion gymnast missed her galentine’s party as well.

Two closest friends on the same occasion at unique addresses

Jordan Chiles kept her observance for Galentine’s occasion in her place last week. This was the first time the 22-year-old Oregon native gymnast celebrated the day. In the presence of her close friends and acquaintances, Jordan shared that evening view quoting, “My first Galentines, at my house!!! in her IG story. But among the prominent faces, Simone made an absence on the occasion. However, the Simone Biles Invitational was a place where the gymnastics duo shared their usual sorority in the first week of February. In the Texas camp as well, they were together.

Amidst festive anticipation a year ago, Simone Biles’s family welcomed a special blessing: Baby Ronni Louise Biles. Her arrival brought boundless joy, quickly becoming her famous aunt’s favorite and lighting up everyone’s lives. Ronni is the daughter of Simone’s elder half-brother, Ron Biles Jr., and his wife, Sammi.

Nevertheless, peace in Biles’ homestead was interrupted when Baby Biles suffered a scary sickness episode, calling for emergency measures to access urgent treatment.

Unexpected Parenthood Realities

Recently, Sammi Biles took to Instagram to share a poignant narrative alongside a photo featuring a T-shirt stained with blood marks. The caption accompanying it reads, “on today’s episode of what happened in our household: the scary af sh*t no one prepares you for as a mom. your child running a low-grade fever last night and this morning then throws up blood. thank God she’s ok and we have gotten her checked out.

Months ago, Simone Biles revealed her affection for babies when she met her newborn niece during Thanksgiving last year. On November 25, 2022 her brother Ron Biles and sister-in-law Sammi Biles welcomed their daughter, Ronni Louise Biles, officially making her the youngest family member. Simone took on a special role as an aunt, showering the baby with love and attention. She joyfully shared an endearing picture on her Instagram, expressing pride in being her “TT” and anticipation to spoil her. Since then, she spent considerable time with the baby, and several months ago, Ron entrusted Simone with the responsibility of positively influencing his daughter, a role she embraced with delight.

Simone Biles and Jonathan Owens’ Humorous Family Planning Dilemma

Newlywed Simone Biles recently discussed her and husband Jonathan Owens’ future plans for starting a family. Amid her return to professional commitments following their May wedding, Biles shared insights into their family planning during a Q&A session on her Instagram page held on July 17. Among various queries about her career and personal life, one fan inquired about their desire for children and the preferred number.

Biles confirmed their interest in having kids, revealing a lighthearted disagreement between her and Owens regarding the ideal number. She humorously mentioned, I would say 2 & Jonathan would say 3 is the perfect number. I don’t want to be outnumbered lol.

After the misery of cheering from the stands as her opponents took the medals she was there to win, Simone Biles’s Tokyo Olympics in 2021 ended on an unforgettable note of defiance. She had suffered throughout the competition with the twisties, a severe mental block that causes a gymnast to lose air awareness when twisting, but Biles returned on the final day and demonstrated her resilience by winning bronze on the balance beam. She described the medal as more meaningful than her countless golds.

For almost two years, it was unclear whether that would be her final as an elite gymnast. But she returned and on Sunday at the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Antwerp the American will take part at a major competition for the first time since the Olympics, the next step in an already remarkable comeback that has added another layer to her story.

During her indefinite leave from the strict regimen and training hours, the 26-year-old took holidays, married her fiance, Jonathan Owens, and she lived. It would have been unsurprising and reasonable if, having won everything she could hope to win in such a gruelling sport that has taken her to hell and back, she decided it was time to move on.

For a long time, she was uncertain: “I’m still taking time for myself just to work on myself, mentally and physically,” she said last September.

Gossip tends to spread quickly outside gymnastics halls and major moves in the sport are usually preceded by ample rumours, yet when she did fully commit to a return, Biles somehow managed to keep her intentions quiet. In early July, her name appeared on the list for the US’s monthly team camp, the first signal of her intention to return. It was still hard to know what to expect for this year; gymnasts often ease their way back in after long layoffs, initially competing routines with lower difficulty. Not Biles. A few days later, she won the all-around competition at that camp by three and a half points.

Since then, things have returned to normal at warp speed. In her first competition back, the US Classic in early August, Biles won the event by five points. A few weeks later, she won a record eighth all-around title at the national championships. Even after an uncharacteristically nervous, error-strewn day during the world team selection camp, she won again to book her place at the world championships. Biles has recorded the three highest all-around scores of the year and she returns as clearly the best in the world.

The philosophy behind the comeback has been as striking as her immediate success. Biles believed one of the numerous reasons for the emergence of her twisties was the pressure imposed on her by others, including US Gymnastics, before Tokyo.

Goal-setting is a central part of gymnastics, with athletes constantly aiming to peak in time for the Olympics, but Biles has addressed the pressure by staying in the moment and focusing on her work. Even as her training ramped up and singular skills morphed into full routines, she made no explicit plan to compete this year until, suddenly, she was ready.

Simone Biles

“A couple of weeks before classics, we were like: ‘OK, we need a leo[tard], because we’re competing,’” she said after the US selection camp. “And I think that’s how the year has gone. ‘OK, you’ve been selected for worlds camp;’ ‘You’re going to worlds now.’ I really don’t think it was set in stone how far I was going to go this year. So I think it’s a surprise and a shock to all of us.”

Working through the twisties and regaining her skills of old has been a difficult process that is far from complete. She is still not competing her most difficult twisting skills, including her eponymous triple-double on floor. But in some ways, she is even better. It is a reflection of her staggering talent that instead of her usual Amanar vault, which contains two and a half twists, Biles has again taken on the most difficult women’s vault of all, the Yurchenko double pike.

While Biles introduced it effectively in 2021, even before her bout of twisties it was not clear if she would risk competing in the vault in Tokyo. As she returned this year, it seemed reasonable to assume the vault would not resurface until 2024, if ever.

It is not only back, but it has been her main vault since that first national team camp in July. She has completed it consistently throughout the summer, doing so with sublime execution. If she lands it in Antwerp, the skill will be her fifth eponymous element.

Ten years ago, Biles emerged for her world championship debut in Antwerp as a 16-year-old. Having arrived in the city thinking she would finish somewhere among the top six, she tore through the competition, winning two golds and four medals in total. At 26, she returns to the same arena seeking her sixth world all-around title having established such incredible longevity in a career that has lasted 10 years and, thankfully, still counting.

In 2013, Antwerp also marked the debut world championships for Max Whitlock, now Great Britain’s greatest gymnast. After taking a break following his Olympic gold on pommel horse in Tokyo, this event is also the venue for his comeback. On Saturday, he returned to major competition with a strong 15.233 on pommel horse that should be enough for a place in the event final next Saturday.

It makes no sense to stop a pinwheel from spinning and pull out a single-colored vane for examination, just to see how it works. It makes even less sense to talk about Simone Biles’s gymnastics in terms of her “skill.” That’s there, yes, but it’s the stick to the twirl. When Biles overcomes physics in the air, it’s not a mere matter of technique. Something more phenomenal takes over in order for her to meet gravity with such dalliance. Call it harmony.

The legacy of the greatest gymnast who ever lived, male or female — and that’s what she is after her comeback to win a sixth individual all-around world championship at 26 on Friday — is that her will and her imagination are in perfect league with her body. That’s what makes her soar. And let it be a lesson to everyone who thinks a young woman champion has to be driven to the point of fracture and self-doubt to become great.

So many times, the beauty and artifice of gymnastics obscure stressed bones and split, pressured motives. Two years ago, when Biles suffered that eye-widening case of “the twisties” during the Tokyo Olympics, there were those who called her a quitter for withdrawing from five of six events. Their buried assumption was that a disorder is the necessary price of a gold medal in women’s gymnastics.

Not anymore, not after the exhibition Biles has made in Antwerp, Belgium, over the past week, at once so muscular and lambent and at ease with herself in peacock blue. “It was emotional, and it means everything to me, the fight, everything that I’ve put in to get back to this place, [to] feel comfortable and confident enough to compete,” she said. “It was a lot.”

What a change in demeanor from Tokyo, where Biles couldn’t mark herself in the air to make a safe landing — her mind simply refused to cooperate with her limbs mid-competition. She was suffering from a tangle of pressures and anxiety, but no small part of it was that USA Gymnastics seemed to expect her to vault lightly past the years-long abuses of team doctor Larry Nassar and the Karolyi coaching regime, and back on to the medal podium, to look past the lack of accountability and lead a pack of younger gymnasts with a plastic, cooperative smile. Something in her rebelled.
“My mind and body are simply not in sync,” she said at the time
These days, she doesn’t complete an interview without proudly talking about her “therapy” and referencing self-care as the bedrock of her accomplishments, which now stand at 35 Olympic and world championship medals and counting. Consider how ridiculously extreme the threshold for physical and mental pain is in her sport: Despite a career encrusted by gold, she had to defend herself from a Texas politician who called her “a national embarrassment” because she withdrew in Tokyo rather than risk falling on her neck and paralyzing herself for the sake of an organization that oversaw her abuse. Now she’s the most decorated athlete in its history. “Every day I try to think about it, especially in therapy when we talk about it,” she said. “And I think that’s when all the emotions come up. And I really think about what I’ve done and what we’ve done to the sport and push that forward.”
Her formal decision to return came only after she took considerable time off to heal her psyche, and plan and enjoy her wedding to NFL safety Jonathan Owens. “I was, like, married to gymnastics,” she told Olympics.com, “and now I feel attached to so many other things and gymnastics is just a part of my day. … I get to go home to a house, to my husband, to my dogs, to all this stuff, where before it was, man, gym, gym, gym.”

She initially returned to workouts to stay fit, and her coaches never tried to argue her into a comeback; new competitive leotards just showed up one day, in case she cared to wear them again. Barely two months ago, she made her initial return to competition, and a week ago it might have seemed she was still getting her competitive feet under her. But here’s what happens when Biles is ready and willing to compete:

Her performance on the four all-around events at the worlds — vault, bars, beam and floor — was her usual combination of beyond-category writhing moves, performed with barely a tremble. There was just a brief quake as she mounted the beam and then, laughably, after a series of skying tumbling runs, a freakish little misstep when a foot caught the mat in the floor exercise, which she promptly recovered from with a rueful grin. Otherwise, she was virtually flawless, especially on her vault, in which she gyroscoped upward and fell to the earth again, with the certainty of a spear driving into the ground, to earn a 9.5 on execution

On the podium, she led a trio of medalists who checked in at 21 or older, flanked by 24-year-old Rebeca Andrade of Brazil and 21-year-old American Shilese Jones. This, too, is part of her legacy — and what a welcome influence. Hopefully it will mean ever-sturdier champions with experience and the ability to stand up for themselves against abusers who may come along, who would bully prom-aged girls into injured acquiescence and make even a gold medalist feel she was letting someone down for simply protecting her own neck.

“Seeing what we’re doing and being more mature, physically and mentally, in the gym, it just gives all the hope in the world that you don’t have to peak at 16,” Biles said a few weeks back, on her return to competition. “Your time is still coming.”

Those who are still coming will have a better time in this wrenching sport because of what Biles has done with her own era.
