One of the greatest sporting rivalries that enthralled fans for two decades has a backstory. The complex relationship between Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson started in the mid-1990s, even before Woods had turned pro in 1996. Mickelson, five years older, was still a young sensation in the circuit.

The two greatest players of their generation fascinated the golf world, as their careers got inextricably linked. But even off the course, their love-hate rivalry offered enough intrigue for people to write books on the subject. One such book, ‘PHIL: The Rip-Roaring (and Unauthorized!) Biography of Golf’s Most Colorful Superstar‘ by Alan Shipnuck took the readers to the very beginning, when it all started.

Nemesis puts the boot in

Golf journalist Shipnuck is Mickelson’s nemesis, but more on that later. In his book, Alan mentions an incident that happened at the Masters many moons ago. Even a young Woods, yet to turn professional, was ‘game’ enough to aim a dig at Mickelson.

At a long-ago Masters, when Tiger Woods was just an intriguing amateur prospect and Phil Mickelson a hotshot young pro who was being billed as the Next Nicklaus, Woods sneaked a reporter into the Crow’s Nest, the tiny dormitory perched atop the Augusta National clubhouse. Tiger was monitoring the Masters telecast when Mickelson alighted the screen,” Shipnuck wrote in his book.

It went on: “Employing a putting stroke that was much too long and loose for the slippery greens, Mickelson characteristically charged a putt past the hole. As the ball trickled farther and farther from the cup, Woods offered only one word of commentary: ‘Roll’.”

Mickelson and Shipnuck have hardly ever seen eye-to-eye ever since the controversial writer made indecent comments about the golfer’s weight gain almost 20 years ago. In his book, too, there has been an effort to unmask the 53-year-old golfer.

Shipnuck also dug deep into Mickelson’s gambling. He informed the readers that the golfer’s gambling losses totalled north of $40 million between 2010 and 2014, according to the writer’s sources.

As for Woods and Mickelson, they are two contrasting characters with completely different styles of play. If Woods is calm, composed and aloof, Mickelson’s golf, more often than not, is flashy and risk-prone. And their backgrounds couldn’t have been more different.

All’s well that ends well

Mickelson, a right-hander who plays left-handed, was talented enough to be considered Jack Nicklaus’ heir apparent. But then, Woods arrived on the scene and started to win Major after Major. Mickelson’s 45 PGA tour wins has six Majors. Woods, on the other hand, has 15 Major wins in his kitty, second only to Nicklaus’ 18.

The two eventually buried the hatchet, when Woods and Mickelson played a practice round together after 20 years, at the 2018 Masters. And, according to Mickelson, their rivalry turned into one of the best friendships in sport.

There was a time when Phil Mickelson was famous (or infamous) for his unhealthy eating habits. He was at the butt-end of ridicule and fat shaming for a good part of his early career. Two decades later, the Lefty is slimmer and healthier courtesy of his intense workout regimen and diet. But that was not before his gluttony impacted his game.

In fact, Mickelson’s prodigious platter once shocked a Ryder Cup legend. Sitting at the same table with him was Tiger Woods with a modest plate of dinner. The difference between their attitude on and off the greens prompted the veteran golfer to make an odd comparison.

The “astonishing” binge-eater that Phil Mickelson was

Alan Shipnuck might not be the best of friends with Phil Mickelson. Well, at this point Mickelson might not want to see his name uttered in the same breath as Shipnuck. But the controversial Sports Illustrated writer has sure some great Mickelson story to tell. Actually, he has so many of them that he decided to write an ‘unauthorized’ biography on Lefty.

In Shipnuck’s, ‘Phil: The Rip-Roaring (and Unauthorized!) Biography of Golf’s Most Colorful Superstar’, the six-time Major winner’s obvious eating habit came to the forefront. It even included Ryder Cup legend Sir Nick Faldo, who shared an astonishing Woods and Mickelson story. Mind you, this was a time long before the alleged Masters dinner snub; a time when the two American legends broke bread with each other.

The golfing world has been rife with news related to the son of the legend of the game, Tiger Woods. The 14-year-old has been able to carry out his father’s legacy on the greens leaving many in the golfing world surprised and in awe of his skills.

And now, hoping to prove himself once again on the course, is none other than Charlie Woods as he gears up for another massive challenge. However, dominating the headlines was not the son but his father as a post of the golfer was uploaded on social media hinting at his comeback to the game, surprising many, all the while leaving his fans hopeful for a return!

Tiger Woods hints at comeback

Tiger and Charlie

The father-son duo is currently readying themselves for the Notah Begay III Junior Golf Championship. The event set to take place at Coushatta will see Woods carry the bags for his kid who qualified for the same after emerging victorious at the Last Chance Florida Regional (Boys).

However, in a post uploaded to Twitter, the 82X PGA Tour winner was spotted on the course in Louisiana. The video of the professional was taken as he went ahead to engage in a practice session with his son ahead of the

The 47-year-old has been helping the young prodigy as he aims to propel his career forward with amazing performances on the greens. This was the case, as well, during the 14-15 division of the NB3 National Championship’s qualifying event as the 1997 Masters Tournament champ was seen carrying the bags and offering advice to his son amid the same.

One can’t help but look on in hope as the news about the 15X major champion shines a light on the legend’s comeback to the game. Moreover, this is not the first time that he was spotted by his fans on and off the greens!

Tiger Woods and his post-recovery appearances

The golfer is rumored to make a comeback at the upcoming Hero World Challenge in December, as per reports. And, adding to the speculation are instances when the PGA Tour Pro makes an appearance both on and off the course.

A tweet of Mr.T was shared showcasing the 47-year-old professional climbing down the stairs at the TGR-designed golf course, in El Cadonal, Mexico, all the while showing positive signs of his recovery. The 3X U.S. Open champ was also seen checking the layout on a golf cart, a little while back, ahead of the Worldwide Technology Championship, with the management team.

It’s still a bit of a mystery as to when Tiger Woods will be able to get back to work on the course, but he did tell reporters Tuesday that his right ankle was pain-free.

However, it’s the rest of the leg that still needs to come along.

“My ankle is fine. Where they fused my ankle, I have absolutely zero issue whatsoever,” Woods said, according to The Associated Press. “That pain is completely gone. It’s the other areas that have been compensated for.

“But all the surrounding areas is where I had all my problems, and I still do. So you fix one, others have to become more hypermobile to get around it, and it can lead to some issues.”

Woods had fusion surgery on his right ankle back in April, which cast doubt on the star golfer appearing in any further majors for the rest of 2023.

Woods caddied for his son, Charlie, over the weekend at the Notah Begay III Junior Golf National Championship, and footage posted by the tournament’s X account showed Woods walking and carrying his son’s golf bag.

“I’m pretty sore after caddying for four days,” Woods said. “It was a flat course, thank God.”

Woods hasn’t played since he withdrew from the Masters in April and underwent surgery two weeks later for arthritis that stemmed from a car crash outside Los Angeles two years ago.

Woods is set to host the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas a week after Thanksgiving, but the golfer isn’t expected to participate in it.

Since the event is sanctioned by the PGA Tour, it would mean 72 holes worth of walking.

What’s more likely to occur is Woods playing in the PNC Championship, which is a PGA Tour Champions-sanctioned event and allows carts.

Woods has participated in the event the past two years with Charlie, including 10 months after the car crash. 6

On Tuesday, Woods was announced as part of the ownership group of the sixth and final team, the Jupiter Links Golf Club, in the TGL, which he developed with Rory McIlroy.

Woods is also set to compete for the team.

Tiger Woods has revealed that his teenage son holds an ambition to beat his legendary father at golf by the tender age of 14. But given that Charlie Woods has already reached the birthday milestone back in February, the youngster only has 10 months left to realise his goal.

The 15-times Major winner was picked up on camera talking about his son while practising with fellow PGA Tour professional Collin Morikawa. In the video, that was shot for golf brand TaylorMade, Woods can be heard explaining to a shocked Morikama how 14-year-old Charlie has already outdriven him once.

With world number two Scottie Scheffler watching on in the distance, Morikawa asks Woods: “Has Charlie beat you yet?” to which Woods replies: “Not yet. He outdrove me the other day though.”

A disbelieving Morikawa says: “Shut up. Rob was saying he was carrying 260 [yards], but even if he’s carrying 260 that still shouldn’t outdrive you?

Woods said: “I hit a little spinner into the wind and just did a tomahawk.”

Charlie Woods

When asked if his son plays from the same tees as him, Woods said: “Yep. He doesn’t play the Tiger tees but he’ll play the blacks. I was like ‘damn’! First time [he’s been outdriven], so it’s coming. He wants to beat me by the time he turns 14. Good luck!”

Golf-mad Charlie is Woods’ second child from his marriage to ex-wife Elin Nordegren. The teenager has been making a name for himself in the sport, playing alongside his world-famous dad at several major tournaments.

Woods, 47, explained to reporters what it was like to have son Charlie alongside him after the pair’s first tournament together in 2020. Appearing in a PGA Tour video, he said: “I don’t think words can describe it. Just the fact that we were able to have this experience together, Charlie and I. It’s memories for a lifetime.

Woods coaches his own son, much like his own father, Earl Woods, did when he was making his way in the sport. But the former world number one has admitted that his own coaching style is a little lighter than the approach that was taken by Charlie’s grandfather.

Woods has been ruled out of next week’s US PGA Championship with an ankle injury. He has struggled for form since his car crash in February 2021 left him with severe leg injuries and almost completely ended his career.

He has appeared in just three competitive events this year and was forced to withdraw from The Masters in April after aggravating a heel problem. Woods has since had successful ankle fusion surgery but will not be fit enough to make the line-up for the second Major of the year.

The father-son pairing of Tiger Woods and Charlie Woods at the PNC Championship has had golf fans buzzing all weekend.

On Saturday, the younger Woods wowed fans with a fantastic eagle and was displayed many of his father’s mannerisms on the golf course.

On Sunday, Charlie Woods upped the ante.

While wearing Woods’ Sunday red, Charlie rolled in a birdie putt and unleashed his father’s iconic fist-pump celebration.

On Twitter, fans celebrated the heartwarming father-son moment.

Miami – Tiger Woods and son Charlie, trying to improve on their runner-up finish of last year, were chasing Justin Thomas and his dad, Mike, in the PNC Championship family golf tournament on Saturday.

The Thomases, who won the light-hearted 36-hole scramble at the Ritz-Carlton in Orlando, Florida, in 2020, were atop the leaderboard after combining for two eagles and 11 birdies in a 15-under par 57.

The Woods family shared second on 13-under with former Masters champion Vijay Singh and his son, Qass Singh.

As it has been since they made their debut in 2020, the spotlight was on the Woods duo, with 15-time major champion Tiger nursing plantar fasciitis in his right foot and 13-year-old Charlie limping slightly on an “iffy” ankle.

Neither was deterred, and after a birdie at the second they caught fire with eight holes of birdie or better on the fourth through 11th.

That included Tiger chipping in for eagle at the par-five fifth.

They added another pair of birdies at the 13th and 14th before Charlie rolled in a birdie putt at the last for their share of second.

“We had a blast slaying it today,” Tiger Woods said. “All day we were after it, and we didn’t get off to a great start but we made some birdies, an eagle and got rolling and really got into it, which was awesome.

“It was very similar to the feeling we had last year on Sunday,” Woods added. “We just got rolling. I had a little bit of a chip-in and all of a sudden a couple putts fell, and we were just trying to give ourselves as many opportunities getting in the fairway, iron shots and putts, and we just got rolling.”

Playing alongside good family friends Justin and Mike Thomas made for plenty of laughter and quite a bit of needling, with Woods acknowledging that their friendly rivalry made for extra motivation.

“Absolutely,” he said. “They got the belt (awarded as trophy) a couple years ago. They rubbed it in our face over Christmas dinner.

“They are in a great position to possibly do it again on Christmas dinner, but we are going to have a little something to say about that.”

Woods, who turns 47 on December 30, has played only nine competitive rounds this year as he recovered from severe leg injuries suffered in a 2021 car crash.

The plantar fasciitis that flared up in his right foot has complicated his preparations for 2023, and he said he still can’t predict a schedule although he hopes to play all four majors.

Tiger Woods may be arguably the greatest golfer to ever live, but according to his son Charlie, his caddying needs a bit of work.

Giving their first joint interview, which is airing on Golf Channel this week, 13-year-old Charlie revealed his dad forgot his putter at the Notah Begay III Junior Golf National Championship.

Asked to sum up his famous dad’s performance on the bag, Woods Jr said: “He forgot my putter a few times. That’s really it.”

Tiger also gave his own thoughts on the experience, adding he is “proud” of his son.

“It’s hard to describe, because it’s so amazing to be able to be with Charlie out there and fight through it together and do it as a team,” the 15-time major winner said.

“Just the fact that he earned his way into the event by shooting the lowest round he’s ever shot. To go out there and play the way he did. Obviously, lots of lessons learned but I think overall the big picture is he thoroughly enjoyed it. It was a lot of fun for both of us.”

“I just want him to enjoy whatever he’s doing,” he added.

“I’m supporting him wherever he wants to go, and obviously providing opportunities for that direction. As a parent our job and responsibility is to provide opportunity and support. It’s been fun that he’s taken a passion to something that I’ve enjoyed.”

Last week Woods Sr revealed he had urged Charlie to copy Rory McIlroy’s swing rather than his own.

He also admitted his teenage son is already capable of outdriving him.

The pair will once again team up at the PNC Championship next week.

A new technology-led team golf competition that is backed by the PGA Tour has been met with scepticism by rival LIV golfers, with one suggesting that it has only been created to keep part-owners Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy happy after both players passed up the opportunity to join the Saudi-backed breakaway tour.

The inaugural TGL season will get underway in January 2024, with some of the biggest names from the PGA Tour already signed up to compete in a mid-week team format 15-match regular season followed by semifinals and finals matches.

The competition will be staged in a purpose-built 2,000-capacity indoor venue, with the action taking place on a huge state-of-the-art golfing simulator and specially designed chipping area.

Woods and McIlroy will be joined by a clutch of Ryder Cup stars including Jon Rahm, Max Homa, Tommy Fleetwood, Justin Thomas, Matt Fitzpatrick, Justin Rose, Adam Scott, Xander Schauffele, Shane Lowry and Rickie Fowler.

Organisers of the TGL are promising to give golf fans a “high-tech, high energy” experience, players on the Private Investment Fund (PIF)-backed LIV Golf league are said to be rolling their eyes at the announcement.

According to the Telegraph, one LIV player said: “Will you be turning in on a Tuesday night to watch guys hitting it into a screen? It’s a blatant fop to Tiger and Rory to keep them onside and earn them millions of guess what, ‘guaranteed money’.”

Rory Mcllory

British LIV golf star Ian Poulter took a more philosophical view on the idea and appears to view it as a back-handed compliment to the concept of the team golf played on the LIV tour.

Poulter told the Telegraph: “Everyone – big businesses, celebrities, sports stars – suddenly want to get in with team sports. Look at Wrexham [Football Club] with those Hollywood actors and other superstars at other teams, clubs and franchises.

Referencing McIlroy’s decision to invest in the Alpine motor racing team alongside Anthony Joshua and Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold, Poulter added: “Look at the news in F1. It’s not just the potential profit margin, it’s being involved and the fun to be had. It’s a win, win. Everyone wants a bit and I think LIV has been a leader in this, yeah. Definitely in golf.”

The TGL will be broadcast live on ESPN in the US every Monday from January next year from the purpose-built SoFi Center in Florida.

Woods and McIlory both turned down huge financial offers to join LIV golf 18 months ago, preferring to stay loyal to the PGA Tour, but the two waring outfits have since announed that they will work alongside each other in a ‘framework agreement’.

The Tiger Woods vs Phil Mickelson debate does not dominate the golf landscape like it used to in the early 2000s. Many things changed over time to put the once firepower duo into the backseat. But a recent report turned all eyes once again to the two most polarizing figures in golf.

America’s Favorite Video Today

With Alan Shipnuck’s shocking Tiger Woods report, and the OWGR’s denial of LIV golf coming into play, the spotlight was once again on the former world no.1 & no. 2. As it turns out, OWGR puts one of them miles ahead of the other and it’s the unlikely one who has gained the lead against all odds.

The OWGR verdict on Woods vs Mickelson debate

Currently, Phil Mickelson sits at no. 112, with 44.34 points. That’s despite the veteran golfer turning his back on the PGA Tour last year and putting himself out of the equation of OWGR points consideration. Whereas Tiger Woods, a staunch PGA Tour loyalist, with 2.22 points is languishing at 1269. Yes, you read that right, the former world no. 1 has tumbled over a thousand spots on the leaderboard.

To put this into perspective, the 82-time PGA Tour winner has played in only 30 international events since 2019, the year of his last Major win. Whereas Mickelson has teed up at 72 international events, becoming the oldest Major winner at the PGA Championship in 2021.

Phil-Tiger

Ironically, Tiger Woods won 67 PGA Tour titles since the turn of the century with 13 of his 15 Majors coming after 2000. Whereas Mickelson had 32 PGA Tour titles to his name in the last 23 years.

Although the career records might put the 15x Major winner ahead of his archrival, the OWGR ranking is clearly on Mickelson’s side. So, despite Tiger Woods having a ‘political’ victory, allegedly slamming the door shut on Mickelson’s face at the Major Winners’ dinner last year, it’s the 53-year-old golfer who will still have a smile on his face.

Alan Shipnuck’s bombshell Tiger Woods claim shocked everyone

Shipnuck’s ‘LIV & Let Die’ has caused enough earthquakes in the last few months than LIV’s inception did last year. The veteran journalist claimed Tiger Woods orchestrated Mickelson’s snub at the private dinner for Open Championship winners at the R&A clubhouse in 2022.

Reportedly, Woods rounded up a few former major winners and convinced them that the LIV defector’s inclusion would put everyone in an uncomfortable situation. In a rift between Woods & Mickelson, it was obvious whose side the former Pros were going to take. Nevertheless, OWGR still puts him miles behind the former world no.2.

Although, the former world no.1’s name is missing from the Hero Challenge Cup lineup, there is speculation that Woods might join on TBA tournament exemption. Still, he has a long way to go in terms of raking up enough points to edge Mickelson once again. And, if OWGR changes its mind about LIV Golf in the coming months, it might be a different story altogether.
