Tim Tszyu

In a few weeks, WBO junior middleweight champion Tim Tszyu takes part in his biggest fight on American soil.

Tszyu will collide with former unified champion Keith Thurman on March 30 at the T-Mobile Arena. The fight will headline a PBC on Prime pay-per-view event.

Initially, Tszyu was slated to face top contender Erickson Lubin, but the contest fell through.

“When you don’t want to fight you overprice yourself, right? But look, I’m not sure what happened. I just know I was training for Lubin. I was told he was the opponent and we were just chasing a date and venue. Then next call I get, we’ve got a date and venue but no opponent. So he didn’t take the fight. That’s it,” Tszyu told Fox Sports Australia.

Tszyu also shot down some of Lubin’s recent statements.

Lubin had suggested that Tszyu should be stripped for facing Thurman in a non-title fight.

Terence Crawford

“How can he say that? I’ve fought three times this past year. Already defended the belt. So to suggest I be stripped, that’s him being sour. I was happy to put the belt up. And why wouldn’t I be? It’s my belt. I’d also spent six weeks getting ready for [Lubin] when I was told everything had changed. I’d been sparring southpaws in preparation, sparring my brother,” Tszyu said.

There has been talk that a win over Thurman could lead to a showdown with unified welterweight champion Terence Crawford, who would move up in weight to take the fight.

“There have been talks between us. And I give Crawford all respect. He’ll fight anyone. And that’s why I see him as such a great challenge. But I also see him as being beatable. But there’s a lot going on. It could be Crawford, Errol Spence, whichever one is easiest to make. That’s why this upcoming fight means so much … I win and the possibilities are endless,” Tszyu said.

Fans everywhere didn’t see it coming. When it came to Tim Tszyu, many were expecting the current WBO junior middleweight champ to either take on Erickson Lubin or possibly Jermell Charlo. Keith Thurman, on the other hand, was essentially an afterthought. The former unified welterweight titlist rarely fights anymore and he’s spent the vast majority of his career campaigning at 147 pounds. So, when it was recently announced that the two would be swapping fists on March 30th, many were left scratching their heads, including Brian “Bomac” McIntyre.

From a betting standpoint, oddsmakers couldn’t care less that Thurman (30-1, 22 KOs) was once viewed as one of the best fighters in the world. They firmly believe that he’ll get pummeled.

Bomac isn’t a fan of making predictions. He reveres both fighters and what they bring to the table. But, when asked to pick a side and stick to it, he admitted that Thurman is a live dog but that Tszyu (24-0, 17 KOs) should walk away with his hand raised.

Terence Crawford

“I think it’s gonna be a good fight,” Bomac told a group of reporters. “Tim Tszyu has the momentum because Keith has been off for a while. I see the fight going toward Tim Tszyu.”

Being sequestered on the sidelines pretty much sums up Thurman’s career as of late. In six years, he’s fought just three times, including none in the past two years. Sitting back and watching the boxing world pass him by has been the exact opposite of Tszyu’s approach. He’s kept an active schedule and is hoping that a win over Crawford would be enough to grab the attention of Terence Crawford.

Boxing is a sport predicated on one-on-one battles. However, Bomac wishes he could place Crawford in a bit of a difficult situation. Of course, it’ll never happen. But, if for some reason the commission were willing to allow Crawford to fight both Thurman and Tszyu simultaneously, Bomac believes his man would barely break a sweat.

“I think Bud would beat them on the same night.”

Many believe that ‘The Soul Taker’ is a natural fit for the bigger game. Given the division he is currently at, a familiar sequence of thought might suggest a super line-up against someone like Canelo Alvarez. More so, Tim Tszyu, per the latest conversation that he had with the media, also seems keen to move across divisions to get big fights. Who knows? It might happen one day in the future. But then, is there any other matchup in the vicinity that may sound like honey to the ears of fans and followers?

Who could have wondered that one day Kostya Tszyu‘s son would be following his path, carrying forward his renowned legacy? The unbeaten Sydney-born boxer, a WBO light middleweight champion, is now expanding his wings further outside the ‘Down Under’. For starters, he would be fighting Keith Thurman on March 30 for a non-title 155 catchweight bout. But what about the future? Is there a space to accommodate another big A-lister in his grand scheme of things? There could be; that’s what he told media personnel while sharing that there wasn’t any dearth of attempts in the past.

For a hemispherical legacy, Tim Tszyu

The revelation came while Tim Tszyu was speaking with the media after yesterday’s kickoff press conference at The Conga Room in Los Angeles. He narrated how he and Terence Crawford were in fact having talks about a fight. But unfortunately, it couldn’t proceed further. Before that, the Thurman bout came up

He said, “Yeah, well, me, I respect Crawford. I think he’s one caliber of a fighter. But we were in negotiations to fight, but this fight came across first,” when one of the reporters asked whether a win over Keith Thurman might tempt ‘Bud’ to call out the Aussie boxer for a fight.

But he also made it clear that the doors were not completely shut on the blockbuster line-up. Possibilities are very much in the offing. “And I think me and Crawford will definitely collide in the future, for sure, 100%.

Terence Crawford

The March 30 event in Las Vegas is a legacy-maker for Tim Tszyu. He returns to the United States after two years for a fight. But what makes the four-match event special is that it will be the first PBC pay-per-view broadcast through Amazon Prime after their landmark deal last year.

A Dream Dance

Now, that’s a real big one. Tim Tszyu is a heavy-hitter like his father. Many expect him to sail through Keith Thurman, who returns after a break of two years. So even fans shouldn’t lose any hope. In fact, Tszyu’s disclosure would have raised the heartbeats of many fans. If, indeed, a fight between Tim Tszyu and Terence Crawford makes it through, then undoubtedly it will be one of the biggest middleweight breakthroughs of recent times.

More so, on his part, even the former undisputed and now unified welterweight champion has been equally open about his ambitions to chase glory and greenbacks. Like Tszyu, he has explicitly expressed an interest in moving up the divisions to fight the likes of Jermell Charlo and Canelo Alvarez. So that being the case, why not fight Tim Tszyu, who’s just a division above?

Three-weight world champion Terence Crawford (40-0) is reportedly looking at making a fight with WBO super welterweight titleholder Tim Tszyu (24-0).

According to Crawford’s trainer, Bernie Davis,

the undefeated 36-year-old is eyeing off a world title in a fourth division, with Australia’s Tszyu at the top of his hitlist.

Tszyu, 29, announced himself to the world with victories over Tony Harrison and Carlos Ocampo, seeing him elevated to world champion with the WBO after Jermell Charlo was stripped of the belt, before defending the title against Brian Mendoza in a busy 2023.

Crawford had seemingly been waiting for a contracted rematch with Errol Spence to be arranged, although the latter’s recent cataract surgery has sidelined those plans, while some have been calling for “Bud” to take on Jaron “Boots” Ennis in a welterweight unification bout.

Tim Tszyu the ‘right one’ for Terence Crawford’s next fight

Speaking on MillCity Boxing, Davis said a fight with Sydneysider Tszyu was currently the frontrunner.

“I think Tszyu will be the right one since we can’t get Spence,” Davis said.

Terence Crawford

“We want to move up and still make history, still have something to get up for and even though ‘Boots’ is an attractive option, I think Tszyu just edges him a little bit.

“I think Tszyu fought the better competition, I think he’s been looking more spectacular in his fights and he got the country [Australia] behind him.

“Plus, he has something that we want. It’s another weight class to jump and it’s another something to aspire to.

“So that’s where I would think we would land.”

Sporting News can confirm the interest in a fight with Crawford is also concrete on Tszyu’s side, although the Aussie will likely have at least one fight before then.

Davis also poured cold water over possible matchups with Devin Haney and Teofimo Lopez, while adding he’d like to see Jermell Charlo “get himself together” before a possible bout with Crawford.

“This guy Tszyu’s coming off some big wins,” he said.

“Beating Mendoza who was coming off a big win and is kind of a seasoned fighter, he been at the world level and Tszyu got the country behind him, been looking good technically, been looking better every fight… and he got the belt.”

Erickson Lubin rejects claims he withdrew from negotiations with Tim Tszyu

Tszyu is currently attempting to line up a bout in Las Vegas in late March, with former world title challenger Erickson Lubin alleged to have dropped out of negotiations, according to Main Event‘s Ben Damon.

However, Lubin has since dismissed this and claimed he was waiting for a date on the bout.

After an eye-catching 12 months, and with Charlo absent and facing assault charges, Tszyu has become the man to beat at 154-pounds and recently responded to a callout from the returning Vergil Ortiz, confirming his interest in a clash with the Texan knockout artist.

Crawford hasn’t fought since his July demolition of Spence which made him undisputed in a second weight class and cemented his status as arguably the sport’s pound-for-pound number one.

A fight between the pair in Australia, where Tszyu is wildly popular, could almost certainly sell out a stadium.
